Excellent choice this week NBS!!!

My family comes from Latvia, an ex-Soviet controlled state, so I feel very connected to Russia.

I have been to Russia: Moscow, Rostov, and Sochi. I went in April 1992, right after the coup. I must say I fell in love with the country, but the people so much more. I remember being with a group of Russians and they were remarking about a young couple kissing and holding hands in Red Square-how that had never been done before during communism. I recall riding on the train and listening to a young woman, who was a host mother, talk and cry about leaving Russia for her children. I remember hanging out with my "Russian" sister, and skipping school to drink grain alcohol in the middle of a park in Rostov. My host father coming back from the Ukraine to have big dinner with lots of vodka, I remember standing in line to get food at the outdoor market, losing all hot water in the apartment, and not knowing when it may come back on, and viewing Lenin as one of the last groups to ever see him.

It was incredible to be there and a defining moment in my life; to see how different being an American truly was. I loved every last second of it, and reminscing about it all the time.

This is dedicated to my beautiful Russian/ex-Soviet Baltic state girlfriends in here: Belladonna, FrosyaBurlakova, Cherry Lady, densolorenso, and zivile1. Their creations are very unique and special to me and always remind me of my time in Russia.

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. It is the one meal I can make very well, and the hubby's favorite foods.

In addition, my dad, brother, and sister normally come to Washington from the East Coast. It's always hilarious because my dad is a hard core New Yorker, and struggles with being in the woods on 24 acres! This year is special since my brother just proposed to his girlfriend, we have a new person to induct into the family! Unfortunately she'll act as my sister, since mine can't come since she's too busy working on her doctorate...

I look forward to this every year; we stay up all night, drink, laugh, share stories, watch great shows, and movies. I always feel like a kid again, even though I'm grown with kids myself. It's always a good time, and I can't wait :)))
