The Ellen Tracy brand was founded in 1949 by Herb Gallen. The World War II era found restrictions on some products, making them difficult to find. One of them was fabric, which Gallen saw as a chance to make his fortune in the clothing industry. Borrowing fabric from a friend, he produced several women's sample blouses. They sold quickly to major department stores in Manhattan under Betty Barr, his wife's name, as the label. He eventually opened his own New York showroom. He sought financial backing and opened a new company. In 1962, Gallen hired a recent college graduate named Linda Allard as an assistant designer. She eventually became the Director of Design and her name was added to the label in 1989. The company evolved from producing junior sportswear to designer sportswear. As the company's evolution continued a dress division was also added. Gallen sold the company to Liz Claiborne in 2002. In 2010, Macy's became the exclusive retailer of the Ellen Tracy brand, making Gallen's original dreams a classic American success story.
