For their Tube Collection (2005), they decided to work with carbon fiber, which is a popular material for aerospace, high tech and competitive sports applications, but rarely found in lighting. The designers saw potential in the many useful properties of carbon fiber, namely its high tensile strength, low weight and low thermal expansion. An ironic twist to this state-of-the-art story is the fact that the process for making the lights is carried out largely by hand. To create the shades, carbon fiber fabric is compression molded into tubes. And to produce the lamp stems, carbon fiber fabric is wrapped around a steel mold and then curled in an autoclave machine that works with high-pressure saturated steam. The result is an architectural form that has a very subtle, but recognizable as carbon fiber, texture and semi-gloss black finish. Bulb (not included): LED, fluorescent or halogen. Made in Italy.
