He insisted that they be made of metal and machine formed, and discovered his solution in "swaging," a method of using pressure to taper and curve a metal tube. For the Swag Leg Chair, the question became how to connect the four legs, and through Nelson's own engineering the resulting base appears deceptively simple. To create the chair shell, Nelson got permission from Charles and Ray Eames to use a patented process they developed for molding plastic. Adapting this process to suit his Swag Leg Chair, Nelson created separate shells for the chair seat and back. Originally made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic, these shells are now made with recyclable polypropylene and are consistent with the Herman Miller commitment to be a good steward of the earth's resources. The Nelson Swag Leg Chair flexes with the sitter and maintains comfortable air circulation through the opening between the seat and back. Wide, flat armrests provide a comfortable resting place for forearms. This original is an authentic, fully licensed product of Herman Miller, Inc. Nelson is a trademark of Herman Miller, Inc.
