With a background ranging from music performance to microbiology, NY-based furniture designer Matt Richmond explores the intersection of design, craft and technology with his iVictrola for iPad (2011). Available in very limited batches, the iVictrola is a beautiful marriage of modern and century-old technology. "I found this old 1920's Magnavox horn in an antique shop and repurposed it as a portable iPhone speaker," says Richmond. Standing on a hand-carved American walnut base, the iVictrola produces sound amplification (or more accurately, maximized efficiency) that is completely acoustic. The docking base does not need to be plugged in nor is it battery powered, and the sound is strong enough to fill a room. Each horn is a unique vintage piece. Made in U.S.A.
