Canadian actress Norma Shearer had already molded herself into a Silent movie sex symbol when she married Irving Thalberg in 1927. The quiet Thalberg, a major producer at MGM, had met his match in the fiesty star and the two lived happily until his death in 1936.
Shearer easily transitioned to sound. Her name was often mentioned in the same breath as Crawford and Davis, if not first. She was truly the queen of Old Hollywood.
I tried to emphasize the large contrast between her public life as a star, and her private life with Thalberg. In films costume designers often chose silk and sequence and skin to emphasize Shearer's sex appeal. Most often the gown was cut low to show off her back or chest.
At home, Shearer chose the more comfortable sportswear popular at the time, and embelished with a scarf or corsage at the lapel
