Design Within Reach Cup Planter, Large 

After a brief career as a watch designer, Naoto Fukasawa moved to the United States to work for the design firm IDEO in 1989. Still learning English, Fukasawa used visuals to communicate with his Silicon Valley coworkers as they designed computers, medical devices, furniture and sporting goods. In 1996 he returned to Japan, where he launched IDEOs Tokyo office, and seven years later he started his own company. Fukasawas approach to design is based on careful observation of peoples actions and feelings. It is in the study of these behaviors that he is able to create products that fit into peoples lives so naturally that they are Without Thought – a concept he now teaches at two universities and to clients worldwide. In designing his Cup Planter (2003), Fukasawa was inspired by the curved shape of ancient wooden bowls to create a cozy atmosphere for plants. The double-walled construction is crafted of UV- and weather-resistant polyethylene that is 100% recyclable. Cup can be drilled in the center from the inside out to allow drainage. Made in Italy. Design Within Reach Wire Planter 

Danish designers Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen and Kasper Rønn named their studio Norm to express their dedication to working with Danish norms and standards refined over hundreds of years, says Bjerre-Poulsen, rather than rejecting them in the endless search for new. The sincerity of their approach – bypassing flashy design for good design – shows in the quality of their work, which endures both physically and aesthetically. The duo conceived their Wire Planter (2015) after visiting a Japanese garden where plants were strategically positioned at different heights to create interesting arrangements. Its named for its minimal wire base, which keeps the focus on its contents. Mix and match heights and plants to create your own stunning arrangements. Design Within Reach Modo Sconce
Design Within Reach Modo Sconce 

For his simple and innovative lighting, Jason Miller draws on everyday aspects of American culture, transforming them into something surprising and beautiful. We have re-engineered inexpensive parts that are made by the thousands in China or India, says Miller about the pieces manufacturing. Modos parts are made by high-end machine shops here in America that typically work for the airline industry. While the inspiration is a bit banal, it is now a very sophisticated product. Design Within Reach Bullet Planter
Design Within Reach Bullet Planter 

The original Bullet Planters were first manufactured by several different companies in the 1950s, none of which were able to trademark the design, and the designer has never been identified. One version of the story goes that a man in the San Francisco Bay Area worked for a company that made the conical, molded fiberglass shapes as satellite dishes. He brought one home, and when his wife saw it, she got the idea to turn it into a planter. This has, however, never been confirmed. Regardless of its origins, the Bullet today is still made from durable, compression-molded fiberglass, perched atop a tripod of powder-coated steel. Dan Grabowski grew up getting a practical education in backyard industrial design. Applying that connection, Grabowski strives to solve problems in smart ways using simple, uncluttered lines. His EverywhereTM Conference Table (2011) is smart in every way, its strength, versatility and ample size making it as welcome in conference rooms as in offices, home craft rooms or even dining rooms. Design Within Reach Mller Model 71 Side Chair with Natural Woven Seat
Design Within Reach Mller Model 71 Side Chair with Natural Woven Seat 

DWR Exclusive In 1944, Niels Otto Møller began his cabinetry company, where old craft traditions, like the handwoven seat on the Model 71 Side Chair (1951), are still used today. Danish cord seats are known for their durability – easily withstanding decades of frequent use – and the strength of this material made it a smart substitute for tires when rubber was in short supply during WWII. Whats amazing about that history is that Danish cord is made of tightly twisted paper. Being a natural material, Danish cord is very pleasant to sit on, and the way its woven provides lasting comfort. Thirty years after he founded his company, Niels Otto Møller began exporting his chairs to Japan, which remains one of its biggest markets due to the simplicity and quality of the design and craftsmanship. Møllers is still a small family-owned business, now managed by Niels son, Jørgen Henrik Møller. These chairs are authentic, fully licensed products of J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik. Made in Denmark. The seat is woven by hand from one continuous 425-foot-long piece of cord. To make the frames, the company selects the raw wood themselves from environmentally friendly areas. Machines are never used for the final polish, as these devices treat all wood the same and cant replicate the finish that comes from polishing by hand. In vintage advertisements for the Model 71 Chair, architect Arne Hovmand-Olsen was sometimes credited as its designer, and for good reason. Niels Otto Møller wasnt well known when he designed the chair, and he wanted to associate it with a prominent name, so he got permission from good friend Arne to use his. Materials: Teak frame; woven paper cord seat. Measurements:H 31.5" W 19.25" D 20" Seat H 17.3"

Jongerius was just beginning her career when she was approached by Maharam and invited to work on a project for their 100th anniversary. Maharam now produces 29 different Jongerius textiles, many of which are in the permanent collections at the Art Institute Chicago, Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum and MoMA. In addition to conceiving textiles for Maharam, Jongerius creates innovative works for clients of her own company, Jongeriuslab, and serves as the design director at Danskina, a Kvadrat Maharam company for which she dreams up rugs. Panton is regarded today as a major contributor to the development of modern design in the second half of the 20th century. The Mirror Throw (1973) is one of his most iconic graphic designs, originally conceived for the famous Visiona II fantasy environment that he created for the Cologne Furniture Fair in 1970.
