Design Within Reach Lampe Gras Model 304 Sconce Lamp Design Within Reach Lampe Gras Model 304 Sconce Lamp More Info Product cell

DWR Exclusive Son of a draftsman and a homemaker, Bernard-Albin Gras was born in Saint-Raphaël, France, in 1886. He would become an engineer and tireless inventor who registered dozens of patents, including one for Lampe Gras (1921). A product of Gras' passion to improve working conditions for hundreds of laborers in ordinary machine shops, research laboratories and design studios in the 1920s, this lighting solution is capable of meeting the needs of many different users. The architect Le Corbusier seized upon the design, which satisfied the demands of his ideology about the perfect object-tool: a form reduced to its pure function, free of superfluous ornament. Corbu furnished his design offices and architectural projects with Lampes Gras, and other early adopters included Eileen Gray, Man Ray and Robert Mallet-Stevens. The cast steel frames are made without screws or welded joints; all parts contribute to utmost effectiveness of the whole. Bulb (not included): LED, CFL or incandescent; E12 base; 40W max. Made in China. Materials: Cast steel body; chrome finish or matte black or white powder-coated finish; Bakelite sphere motion component. Design Within Reach Spectrum Throw Design Within Reach Spectrum Throw More Info Product cell

In 1723, a cooperative mill was started in County Wicklow, Ireland, where farmers could spin and weave their wool into tweeds and blankets. All the yarn was uncolored at first, but then the farmers started experimenting with natural vegetable dyes, and soon the mill's output was livened with reds, greens and yellows. After thriving for more than two centuries, the business ran into trouble. By 1960, the looms had been abandoned, and the mill had fallen into disrepair. In the 1970s, a young family came upon an advertisement listing the property for sale, and the rest is history, as they say. Still overseen by that same family today, the mill has stayed true to its heritage, weaving premium rugs, throws and scarves out of wool, mohair, cotton and linen. The warm, luxurious Spectrum Throw (2012) is made using all-natural fibers and dyes, with a colorful pixel pattern. This blanket is great for throwing over the bed, a sofa or yourself. Made in Ireland. Materials: 100% lambswool; vegetable dye. Measurements:L 72" W 57"

Design Within Reach NelsonTM Cigar Wall Sconce Design Within Reach NelsonTM Cigar Wall Sconce More Info Product cell

Architect George Nelson, who was Herman Miller's design director from 1945 to 1972, once said, "Every truly original idea seems to find its most important expression in a chair." And then he blew the doors off lighting design. While outfitting his office, Nelson discovered a silk-covered Swedish hanging lamp that he coveted but found too expensive. He then recalled seeing a photo in the paper of Liberty ships being mothballed "by having the decks covered with netting and then being sprayed with a self-webbing plastic," which got him thinking. "And then, Whammo!" Inspiration struck, and by the next night, Nelson had designed his first Bubble Lamp® (1952) by spinning a skeleton of steel wires on a turntable and shooting it with translucent plastic until it was covered in a smooth, washable film. "When you put a light in it, it glowed." This is the authentic Bubble Lamp, produced in partnership with the George Nelson Foundation. Bulb (not included): LED, CFL or incandescent; E26 base; 150W max. UL Listed. Made in U.S.A. Design Within Reach Bankers Alarm Clock Design Within Reach Bankers Alarm Clock More Info Product cell

One of Arne Jacobsen's last designs, the Banker's Clock (1971) was created for the Danish National Bank, also designed by Jacobsen, located in central Copenhagen. In this tabletop alarm clock size, the clock face has the same graphic that Jacobsen designed for the bank. Its clean face has a 12-square line marking each hour position; the square closest to the clock's center is filled starting at one o'clock, the next at two and so on, creating a subtle spiral pattern. The alarm is a pleasant sounding bell – very old school – and snooze is activated with a light tap on the top of the clock. To see what time it is during the night, tap the top for a touch-sensor LED light that automatically shuts off. The Banker's Clock features a precision quartz movement powered by two AA batteries (not included). This is an authentic Arne Jacobsen clock manufactured by Rosendahl Timepieces. Made in China. Materials: ABS plastic; impact resistant lens; stainless steel base; Japanese quartz movement. Measurements:H 4.75" W 4.5" D 2.75"

Design Within Reach Planterworx Arena Rectangular Planters Design Within Reach Planterworx Arena Rectangular Planters More Info Product cell

DWR Exclusive What began as a small manufacturing business two decades ago has grown into an industry leader in landscape products. Planterworx was founded by Randy Rollner, who studied at Parsons before beginning his career in architectural metal in 1997. "It's all in the details," says Rollner, and the designers on his team are true artisans and craftsmen who bring the precise, balanced lines normally found in modern architecture to these metal Planters (2011). The Planterworx designers insist on using a high percentage of recycled content and recyclable materials. The powder-coated charcoal Planters are finished with an eco-friendly process that contains no V.O.C.s, and the overspray is 100% recoupable. The Corten® Steel Planters are made of the same material designed for bridges and skyscrapers, which has a reactive patina period of three to nine months, depending on location and climate. This patina or rust acts as a protective barrier and does not compromise the structural integrity of the material. However, the carbon runoff will stain adjacent materials like stone and concrete. Limit staining by using your Planter in a garden or lawn area during the patina period. After the initial reactive period, Corten Steel will cure and self-seal with very little runoff. Equipped with drainage holes. The Corten Steel Planters do not come pre-weathered. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Corten Steel or powder-coated aluminum in a charcoal finish. An icon of midcentury French modernism, Jacques Adnet knew the unique position that he and his fellow modernists occupied in history, poised on the cutting edge of something entirely new. With their deft contrast of materials, his mirrors reflect the timelessness of his work. Inspired by work he was doing at the time for Hermés, the hanging Adnet Round Mirror (1946) consists of mirrored glass wrapped in a luxurious hand-stitched full-grain aniline leather strap fitted with brass hardware. In the 1990s, Danish designer Niels Hvass became a leader in the Nordic design scene by creating furniture that earned him awards and recognitions from Bo Bedre, Georg Jensen and The Design Foundation. He designed his teak Cutter Collection to challenge overly nostalgic wooden outdoor furnishings, bringing elegance and simplicity to outdoor spaces, as well as interior ones. Originally intended for gardens and patios, the Cutter Box (2008) is also fitting for kitchens and bathrooms. This piece features specially engineered mortise-and-tenon joints for durability. Like all teak products, it will develop a rich, silvery patina over time, or it can be treated with teak oil to maintain its original luster. Made in Thailand. DWR Exclusive Jesús Gasca is the principal designer at Stua, a furniture company that he founded in 1983 in San Sebastián, Spain. With his company's name standing for solo tengo un amor – "I have only one love" – it's Gasca's mission to improve the habitat in which we live. His Deneb Teak Stool (2003) celebrates materials in their purest form, combining austere aluminum with smooth, slatted teak. Clean-cut V-shaped legs are configured to increase stability and allow two or more stools to be put together for a unified ensemble. Design Within Reach Sprouting Golden Wheat Field Design Within Reach Sprouting Golden Wheat Field More Info Product cell

Bonnie Edelman's latest series was born out of experimentation during a family vacation in Uruguay several years ago. While driving through the countryside, she mistakenly captured an out-of-focus image. In this digital age, she was tempted to erase her "error" immediately but held off for some reason. Weeks later, she came across the image again and fell in love with its abstract tranquil character and vibrant hues. Since then, she's captured others in a similar vein from shorelines, boats and airplanes, resulting in the aptly named Scapes (Land, Sea and Sky), her latest grand body of work. According to Edelman, embracing this unique style has given her a brand-new perspective on the world, allowing her to envision it in blurs of color rather than restrictive details. "Sprouting Golden Wheat Field" (2009), captured in Germany, is available in three sizes. This archival-quality chromogenic print is face-mounted on quarter-inch-thick Plexiglas, then beautifully finished with flame-polished edges and acid-free Sintra foam backing. Each piece is signed and numbered. "Sprouting Golden Wheat Field" must ship with our White Glove delivery service. Materials: Archival-quality chromogenic print; Plexiglas; Sintra foam backing.
