Design Within Reach Cup Planter - Extra-Large
Design Within Reach Cup Planter - Extra-Large 

After a brief career as a watch designer, Naoto Fukasawa moved to the United States to work for the design firm IDEO in 1989. Still learning English, Fukasawa used visuals to communicate with his Silicon Valley coworkers as they designed computers, medical devices, furniture and sporting goods. In 1996 he returned to Japan, where he launched IDEOs Tokyo office, and seven years later he started his own company. Fukasawas approach to design is based on careful observation of peoples actions and feelings. It is in the study of these behaviors that he is able to create products that fit into peoples lives so naturally that they are Without Thought – a concept he now teaches at two universities and to clients worldwide. In designing his Cup Planter (2003), Fukasawa was inspired by the curved shape of ancient wooden bowls to create a cozy atmosphere for plants. The double-walled construction is crafted of UV- and weather-resistant polyethylene that is 100% recyclable. Cup can be drilled in the center from the inside out to allow drainage. Made in Italy. Materials: Polyethylene. Measurements:H 23" Diameter 27.5"

Design Within Reach Wire Planter
Design Within Reach Wire Planter 

Danish designers Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen and Kasper Rønn named their studio Norm to express their dedication to working with Danish norms and standards refined over hundreds of years, says Bjerre-Poulsen, rather than rejecting them in the endless search for new. The sincerity of their approach – bypassing flashy design for good design – shows in the quality of their work, which endures both physically and aesthetically. The duo conceived their Wire Planter (2015) after visiting a Japanese garden where plants were strategically positioned at different heights to create interesting arrangements. Its named for its minimal wire base, which keeps the focus on its contents. Mix and match heights and plants to create your own stunning arrangements. All sizes include a removable plug for drainage, making them suitable for use indoors and out. Made in China. Materials: Powder-coated steel. Material research primarily determines all of Jongerius designs. Her vast portfolio includes single pieces exhibited at galleries, mass-produced products sold at retail stores, design of airliner interiors and even the redesign of the North Delegates Lounge at the UN Headquarters in New York. Jongerius was just beginning her career when she was approached by Maharam and invited to work on a project for their 100th anniversary. Maharam now produces 29 different Jongerius textiles, many of which are in the permanent collections at the Art Institute Chicago, Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum and MoMA. In addition to conceiving textiles for Maharam, Jongerius creates innovative works for clients of her own company, Jongeriuslab, and serves as the design director at Danskina, a Kvadrat Maharam company for which she dreams up rugs. She has a very clear idea of what makes a successful rug: There are three components that have to make music together: interesting yarns, great construction and the right technique to give the pattern dazzling oxygen. Her Bold Rug (2014) features manually and mechanically spun yarns, resulting in a deeply irregular heavy texture. It strategically employs color to divide its surface, with a body that has two main hues in a 2-1 ratio and an accent hue that demarcates where the fringe begins. Made in India. In 1723, a cooperative mill was started in County Wicklow, Ireland, where farmers could spin and weave their wool into tweeds and blankets. All the yarn was uncolored at first, but then the farmers started experimenting with natural vegetable dyes, and soon the mills output was livened with reds, greens and yellows. After thriving for more than two centuries, the business ran into trouble. By 1960, the looms had been abandoned, and the mill had fallen into disrepair. In the 1970s, a young family came upon an advertisement listing the property for sale, and the rest is history, as they say. Still overseen by that same family today, the mill has stayed true to its heritage, weaving premium rugs, throws and scarves out of wool, mohair, cotton and linen. The warm, luxurious Spectrum Throw (2012) is made using all-natural fibers and dyes, with a colorful pixel pattern. This blanket is great for throwing over the bed, a sofa or yourself. Made in Ireland. Materials: 100% lambswool; vegetable dye. Measurements:L 72" W 57"

The original Bullet Planters were first manufactured by several different companies in the 1950s, none of which were able to trademark the design, and the designer has never been identified. One version of the story goes that a man in the San Francisco Bay Area worked for a company that made the conical, molded fiberglass shapes as satellite dishes. He brought one home, and when his wife saw it, she got the idea to turn it into a planter. This has, however, never been confirmed. Regardless of its origins, the Bullet today is still made from durable, compression-molded fiberglass, perched atop a tripod of powder-coated steel.
