Design Within Reach Sonno Versa Mattress

DWR Exclusive The Sonno Versa (2003) brings unprecedented versatility to shared beds. It comprises two individual reversible mattress halves placed side by side snugly inside a cover made of CoolMax, a patented ventilating fabric that wicks away moisture to help the body maintain an ideal temperature while sleeping. Each half of the mattress has a firm side and a soft side, allowing both sleepers to suit their needs. (The seam between mattress halves is undetectable.) Unlike other memory foam mattresses, the Sonno immediately adjusts to suit your body position without requiring a warm-up period, supporting your weight whenever you roll. The result is a feeling of floating, which allows you to rest naturally, isolated from vibrations and movement that interrupt sound sleep. Free of metal coils that loosen and shorten the life of traditional mattresses, the Sonno Versa Mattress is designed to last. It ships rolled in a compact tube for easy handling and quickly expands to full thickness, ready for use on a well-ventilated platform or slat bed. Backed by a 10-year limited warranty. Design Within Reach Saarinen TulipTM Stool
Design Within Reach Saarinen TulipTM Stool

Eero Saarinen called himself a “form giver,” and everything he designed – from the Gateway Arch in St. Louis to his Womb Chair to his Pedestal Table – had a strong sculptural quality. “The underside of typical tables and chairs makes a confusing, unrestful world,” said Saarinen. In a 1956 cover story in Time magazine, he announced that he was designing a collection to “clear up the slum of legs in the U.S. home.” Later that year, he completed his Pedestal Table and Tulip Chair Collection (1956) with its cast aluminum base inspired by a drop of high-viscosity liquid. The compact and comfortable Tulip Stool has a swivel seat with padded cushion. Each stool is stamped with the KnollStudio logo and Eero Saarinen’s signature. Design Within Reach Broom Counter Stool
Design Within Reach Broom Counter Stool

Imagine, says Philippe Starck, a guy who takes a humble broom and starts to clean the workshop, and with this dust he makes new magic. The dust Starck refers to is reclaimed polypropylene and wood fiber, two of the materials used to create his Broom Collection (2012). Starck first drew the shape of his reclaimed, repurposed and recyclable Broom in 2003, but it took a decade to design it in these eco-friendly materials. It made its debut at the 2012 Salone del Mobile in Milan, and as soon as we saw it, we knew it belonged in our assortment. Durable, comfortable, colorful and unique in how it makes use of normally discarded materials, Broom is a smart solution that literally sweeps up waste from the industrial manufacturing cycle. All colors suitable for outdoor use except orange. This is the authentic Broom Stool by Emeco. Made in U.S.A. Made of 90% industrial waste. Broom is a patented design by Philippe Starck for Emeco. Design Within Reach 20-06 Counter Stool

The 20-06 Counter Stool (2006) shares the same tensile strength as other aluminum Emeco seating – three times that of steel. With its indestructible anodized finish it is suitable for outdoor use or anywhere moisture can collect. In 2001, the Museum of Modern Art in New York asked Emeco and Philippe Starck to design a stool for a Ludwig Mies van der Rohe retrospective. The museums request was simple: Create a stool that Mies would have chosen for the exhibition himself. Simple and straightforward, the Emeco Stool (2001) is made using the same 77-step process that Emeco perfected to satisfy the militarys need for lightweight, corrosion-resistant chairs for submarines. The companys proprietary metal processing method yields aluminum three times stronger than steel – and a stool so durable that it has an estimated life span of 150 years. Stool with brushed finish suitable for outdoor use. This is the authentic Emeco Stool by Emeco. Made in U.S.A. Leave it to designer Philippe Starck to find inspiration in the furniture of Versailles when creating a chair for a Chinese restaurant in Paris. The Kong Counter Stool (2002) is handcrafted in Pennsylvania using the same 77-step process Emeco first developed for its Navy Chair. While the shape of Kong recalls more delicate French designs, the manufacturing of this chair gives it an ability to stand up to even the most unruly of patrons. A proprietary heat treatment makes the aluminum three times stronger than steel, and all Emeco chairs and stools are tested to withstand 1,700 pounds of weight (which is good to know in case that restaurant in Paris is very popular). Born in England, Jasper Morrison was raised in both Germany and the United States before his family settled in London, where he attended Kingston College School of Art & Design and the Royal College of Art. Morrison is a self-described conceptual designer, taking familiar shapes and repurposing them into fresh ones. Believing that what you dont see is as important as what you do see, he designed and engineered Alfi (2015) to be an ordinary chair with extraordinary invisible qualities. Its seat is made from reclaimed post-industrial waste, and its base is made of responsibly harvested wood handcrafted by Amish woodworkers. Adding even more extra to its extraordinariness, Morrison shaped the seat as a nod to cane chairs seen at sidewalk cafés found throughout Paris. The result is simple and simply beautiful, and one hes pleased with: Its one of the most comfortable chairs I have designed. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Reclaimed post-industrial waste seat (92.5% polypropylene; 7.5% wood fiber); solid ash base. Measurements:H 39" W 17" D 19.75" Seat H 25.75"

DWR Exclusive Omar De Biaggio got his start by cold-calling furniture stores and wholesale dealers he found listed in Elle Décor magazine. A handful agreed to see his prototypes, so he jumped in his car and drove to meeting after meeting. After his career-changing road trip, De Biaggio returned home with commissions for 300 chairs. When you show something to passion-driven people who understand why you designed it, and it finds a place in their hearts, then your product will be successful, says the designer. Omar De Biaggio named his Bacco Stool (2013) after Bacchus ( Bacco in Italian), the Roman god of wine, because its a source of relaxation, a way to enjoy a well-deserved rest after a hard days work. This is a multipurpose, modern and elegant chair, says the designer, with soft lines and, above all, a cozy shape, thanks to 3-D molding technology. The result is a curved shell that looks delicate but withstands frequent use, padded with crushproof rubber foam for additional comfort. Made in Italy. Materials: Solid walnut or oak legs; 3-D molded plywood and steel frame; polyurethane foam padding; Angel fabric (100% polyester), Textured Stripe fabric (8% acrylic, 26% cotton, 12% wool, 10% viscose, 4% linen) or leather upholstery. Christophe Pillet brings simplicity, sensuality and a light touch to his internationally renowned work with Lacoste, Catherine Malandrino, Cappellini, Emu, Renault and others. This French designer was trained in Italy, where he assisted Martine Bedin and Michele De Lucchi, and returned to France in 2003 to launch his own agency. His collaboration with Emeco began in 2009 when Pillet was commissioned by Hotel Sezz to do the interiors for its new St. Tropez location. A contemporary interpretation of beauty, timelessness and industrial heritage, the Sezz Counter Stool (2010) is sleek and inviting. The look is very subtle, says Pillet, but it holds unbelievable quality. You dont see the welding, the recycled aluminum, the indestructibleness – they are all real but invisible values, the hidden territory of a luxury product. The Sezzs engineering challenge was to build the perfect frame to fit the comfortable rounded seat. The solution is a tube design thats bent by hand to hold the deep seat basket, and then, like all Emeco seating, is hand-welded, ground and hardened. The resulting Sezz Collection, built to last lifetimes, combines Emecos traditional heritage with a very modern design. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Anodized aluminum; clear Lexan polycarbonate glides. Shin and Tomoko Azumi have brought innovation to a range of products, from subwoofer speakers to salt and pepper shakers to their LEM Piston Stool (2000). Named Product of the Year at the FX International Interior Design Awards in the year of its release, the often copied LEM Piston Stool reveals a rigorous and original rethinking of the form and function of seating. The sculptural seat not only swivels but also adjusts easily from counter height to bar height with a lever that activates a gas cylinder. While utility strongly determines its form, this unique stool also has a visual lightness that creates the illusion of freedom from gravity. After designing the LEM Piston Stool, Shin and Tomoko Azumi dissolved their partnership to start solo practices, and they both still develop furniture, lighting and interiors for clients worldwide. LEM is included in the permanent collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Made in Italy. Founded by architect Oki Sato in 2002, Nendo is a Tokyo-based multidisciplinary studio that specializes in architecture, interiors, furniture, industrial products and graphic design. Known for his prolific and diverse work, Sato was named designer of the year in 2012 by both Wallpaper and Elle Décor magazines. During an interview with The Wall Street Journal , he shed some light on the studio itself: Nendo means playdough, almost – its about mixing different colors and creating different shapes. Its the flexibility of designing things. That approach was certainly key to the creation of the Su Counter Stool (2014), as was the Japanese concept of su , which translates to simple, plain and minimal. An engaging mix of shapes and materials, the Su Stool celebrates the eco-friendly design, deft engineering and strength for which all Emeco products are known. The 1006 Navy Chair has always been the chair, and its been an honor to work with Emeco to create Su, Sato says. For us, it is the stool. The seat does not swivel. Made in U.S.A. Craig Bassam was working on a project in Switzerland when he found a tractor seat on the side of the road. He was impressed by how the seat allowed him to sit in an upright, ergonomic position without the aid of a chair back, but unlike the metal seat that he found, he wanted to create this type of seat in wood. Bassams Tractor Stool (2000/2001) is carved out of a massive block of sustainably sourced ash or walnut, the quality of which is in the top 10% of premium woods. No stains are ever used, and because of the natural variations in wood, every Tractor Stool is unique. Each is finished by hand with a wipe-on oil and sealer product; by not using spray booths, BassamFellows maintains a healthy work environment for its artisans. Scratches that come with normal use of this stool will create a warm, inviting patina over time. Tractor is used in diverse settings worldwide, from the W Hotel in South Beach to the Herman Miller® showroom in New York to Le Royal Monceau hotel in Paris.
