Design Within Reach Royal System Shelving Unit D
Design Within Reach Royal System Shelving Unit D

DWR Exclusive Owner of more than 400 patents, self-taught inventor Poul Cadovius constantly sought smarter solutions for everything from furniture to bus shelters to sailboats. In the mid-1940s, he devised an ingenious wall-mounted shelving system to save floor space: the Royal System (1948). After the systems introduction, Cadovius three-employee firm soon became the largest furniture manufacturer in Denmark, exporting to countries worldwide. In 2010, Cadovius gave the rights to produce the design to Danish company dk3. A year later, he died at the age of 99, but the project continued under the watchful eye of his widow, Evy, who made sure it stayed true to her husbands high standards. The most successful furniture collection in Denmark for three decades, the Royal System is back in production and available only at DWR. Use it in entryways, living rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms – wherever you want to lift space-stealing furniture off the floor and have more room for living. All pieces are finely crafted using time-honored techniques perfected over centuries by Danish woodworkers. Wall mounting not included with In-Home Delivery service. Made in Denmark. Shelves will flex very slightly over time but will still retain their structural integrity. We recommend a weight limit of 35 pounds per shelf to maintain a straight profile. Unit D includes a set of three drawers, cabinet, desk cabinet and sliding-door cabinet, all of which can be mounted anywhere on the rails. Sliding doors in additional colors sold separately. Widen any unit by adding the Extension Unit. Materials: Solid walnut or soaped oak rails; MDF with walnut or soaped oak veneer shelves and cabinets; raw brass hangers (with walnut, meant to patina over time) or stainless steel hangers (with oak). Measurements:H 78.75" W 127.75" D 15" Shelf D 9.5"

Design Within Reach NelsonTM Thin Edge Buffet
Design Within Reach NelsonTM Thin Edge Buffet

George Nelson was the design director at Herman Miller from 1945 to 1972. His influence over three decades is what made the Michigan-based company what it is today. Not only did Nelson recruit Charles and Ray Eames and Isamu Noguchi, but he also created a portfolio of work without which the history of modern design would be incomplete. Together with designers Irving Harper and John Pile, Nelson introduced the Thin Edge Collection (1952), originally called the Rosewood Case Series, as a refined version of the Basic Cabinet Series from 1946. Striking characteristics include the placement of the wood veneer and the especially thin edges, hence the later name. Made today with environmentally sustainable veneers and 85% recycled materials, Thin Edge takes advantage of the latest manufacturing technologies without compromising its original look and feel. Inside the two-door cabinet there are two adjustable shelves. Self-leveling glides adjust to uneven floor surfaces. This is the authentic Thin Edge Buffet produced by Herman Miller, Inc. Nelson is a trademark of Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Walnut, ash or santos palisander veneer with clear coat finish; matte black finish on back panel; solid birch drawers; white powder-coated or polished aluminum pulls; polished aluminum legs. Design Within Reach Line File Pedestal
Design Within Reach Line File Pedestal

DWR Exclusive I have always been inspired by the simple forms of turntables and entertainment units from the 1960s, says designer Nathan Yong – a remarkable statement when you learn that Yong grew up in a wooden hut by the sea, where he and his brother made their own toys and waited for low tides so we could pick up treasures from the shore. Growing up with the beach as entertainment, Yong developed into a resourceful designer, whose work captivated us with its quiet elegance. At Salone del Mobile , the annual furniture fair in Milan, Yong showed us his Line Media Console, and we liked the aesthetic so much that we asked him to expand the collection. He responded with a range of versatile pieces that blur the boundaries between dining areas, living rooms and workspaces. A smart office storage option, the Line File Pedestal (2012) has a louvered drawer with compartment tray for stationery and supplies and a louvered file drawer for storing letter- and legal-size hanging folders. Fitted with locking casters for mobility and stability. Made in Malaysia. Materials: Solid American walnut, white oak or painted ash frame; MDF with walnut, oak or painted ash veneer. Measurements:H 22.25" W 15.75" D 21"

Design Within Reach Zenith Shag Rug

DWR Exclusive After receiving her masters in product design in 2010 from Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe, Germany, Joa Herrenknecht moved to New York to work for Studio Dror. She earned her second degree in graphic design in 2011 after studying in Sydney, Australia, then moved back to Germany and founded Studio Joa Herrenknecht in Berlin in 2012, where she now presides over graphic, interior and product design projects. Herrenknecht drew inspiration for her Zenith Shag Rug (2014) from Beni Ourain-style rugs of the early 1900s, made popular by their integration into interiors created by the likes of Le Corbusier, Charles and Ray Eames, Alvar Alto and others. The Beni Ourain tribes of Morocco were renowned for their lavish rugs, woven of high-grade wool shorn from sheep found among the Atlas Mountains and detailed with natural dyes. With thick soft pile that beckons your feet and subtle repeating diamond patterns that catch your eye, Zenith stays true to the Beni originals. Made in India. Materials: 100% New Zealand wool. DWR Exclusive Leave it to an architect to create a shelving system thats just as versatile as building blocks. The work of Belgian-Dane Julien De Smedt of JDS Architects, this modular system lets you create a shelving unit to fit your particular space and style. Our projects are humanly designed, politically engaged, financially viable and structurally realistic, says the designer. When asked how he sees the new Nordic celebrated by the Danish company Muuto, De Smedt says it is like an embrace of a southern culture with a northern rigueur. The embodiment of that vision, his Stacked Shelving System (2008) can be randomly stacked or precisely coordinated into a tight grid. The three shelves are scaled to accommodate all kinds of books and other media, and while there are only three sizes offered, there are actually five shapes to experiment with, depending on how you position the two rectangles. The negative spaces created between them give you even more orientation options. Each shelf includes a steel clip to connect two boxes together. Shelves are available in three styles: open cube, cube with backboard or cube with door and backboard. Shelves with backboards include a wall mounting kit. To order the wall mounting kit for shelves without backboards, call us at 1.800.944.2233. Podium and additional clips also sold separately. Made in China.
