Rejuvenation Pair of Epic Polychromed Revival Sconces
Rejuvenation Pair of Epic Polychromed Revival Sconces

If you ever felt the desire to revive some romance, this fantastic pair of Romance Revival double-candle sconces might be the place to start. From the rustic hammer texture and rich, polychome finish to the "wrought-iron" look and vaguely Gothic motifs, these fixtures drip with more drama and detail than a Hollywood "talkie." We're not sure where we'd most love to see them used - a traditional location like a living room, dining room or hallway, or somewhere more creative and unexpected, like a bedroom, bathroom or library. Historical Style: Romance Revival Bulbs not included.

Case from brass, featuring 5 candlesticks and a downward-facing bare bulb, these enormous sconces require a place of prominence, either in your dining hall or flanking your stone hearth. There are many Revival styles at play here: Classical, most notably with acanthus leaves and bead work. But our favorite design element is the tiny Viking ships above each mica panel. Historical Style: Romance Revival Mica insert is a new replacement – perhaps there were small mirrors there originally. Condition Notes: Nice aging on the original brass finish. Rejuvenation Pair of 2-Candle Sconces w/ Faux-Hammered Texture
Rejuvenation Pair of 2-Candle Sconces w/ Faux-Hammered Texture

The Romance Revival period was characterized in lighting design by a free mixture of styles, with influence from many sources - Classical, Colonial, Tudor, Gothic, Medieval, Moorish, and sometimes pure Hollywood storybook fancy. Typically dating from the 1920’s and ‘30’s, Romance Revival fixtures are exuberant and warm, often brightly painted with polychrome finishes, and capped with artistic flourishes like crystal drops, heraldic shields, cast crenellated medallions or elaborate stamped-metal botanical patterns. Though mass produced, many feature faux rivets and hammering, as though wrought by hand; a nostalgic reminder of bygone pre-industrial days. Originally emerging from the birth of Hollywood spectacle and the elaborate movie palaces that sprang up around the nation, the style thrived through the Depression era, as people yearned for relief from the bleak realities of daily life. Both quaint and austere residences enjoyed this style, and you find Romance Revival lights in countless English, Colonial, Mediterranean, and other Revival-style homes and buildings across the nation. Historical Style: Romance Revival Condition Notes: Perfectly weathered original finish, brass with antiqued highlights. Pull chains still function in original sockets. Bulbs not included.

Rejuvenation Pair of Ornate Silver-Plated Candle Sconces
Rejuvenation Pair of Ornate Silver-Plated Candle Sconces

When Pompeii and Herculaneum were discovered, the Classical Revival was born in Europe. When the United States declared independence and set up a Greek-style Democracy, the Classical Revival was born in America. The endless refined appeal of Classical design stretches across the 19th and 20th centuries, and encompasses variations like Beaux Arts, Neo-Classical, Rococo and Greek Revival. Design elements like coves and ogees are borrowed from ancient architecture, and ornaments are predominated by acanthus leaf, Greek key, egg and dart, and wave motifs. While most Classical Revival lighting was at home in municipal and public buildings, these impressive fixtures make great focal points for today’s homes of any style. Historical Style: Classical Revival Because the backplates of these sconces are fairly narrow, someone added circular backplates to cover junction boxes. They thoughtfully silver plated the backplates, so they match well and seem quite at home. Note also, that the pull chains are in different locations on each of the candle sockets. Condition Notes: The worn finish is all part of the charm and character of this pair. Bulbs not included.

Rejuvenation Pair of Sweet Toleware Candle Sconces
Rejuvenation Pair of Sweet Toleware Candle Sconces

In the United States, the Colonial Revival represented both national pride and nostalgia for our 18th century beginnings. As both pride and nostalgia are always in style, the Colonial Revival had several revivals of its own, during the 1870’s, the 1920’s and the 1940’s, and remains a very popular style in architecture and lighting to this day. Throughout these rebirths, Colonial Revival lighting was characterized as modestly elegant, traditional and symmetrical, with graceful curves and turned elements that usually lacked overt ornamentation. Shining brass and polychromed metals were the most popular, but silver plated finishes often adorned the more elevated fixtures. Historical Style: Colonial Revival Simple, tin construction, hand-painted in the tradition of toleware lighting and home-goods. Condition Notes: While the switches at the base of the backplates work, the sockets have been disconnected. Bulbs not included.
