DWR Exclusive British industrial designer Terence Woodgate is a Royal Designer for Industry (RDI), the highest honor awarded to designers in the U.K. Hes known for his obsessive attention to detail, which is beautifully illustrated in his Unison Table (2011). Visually simple, this two-tier table is actually quite complex in its design. In place of fasteners and external hardware, Unison uses a lower shelf as the structural component to hold the legs firmly in position. Its glass tabletop rests on neoprene pads, and Woodgate had to be sure to get the weight just right to make the pads grip sufficiently. Visible through the tabletop is the lower shelf with exquisitely cut half-sawn wood veneer. Made in Slovenia. Charles and Ray Eames had ideas about making a better world, one in which things were designed to bring greater pleasure to our lives. Its been more than 70 years since the duo began experimenting with molded wood, using their Kazam! Machine to press thin sheets of wood veneer against a heated membrane that was inflated by a bicycle pump. As the designers pushed the material as far as it could go, they continued to explore and discover, surrendering to the design process that ultimately led to the perfection of their signature molded plywood shaping technology. The CTW1 Rectangular Coffee Table (1946) is yet another embodiment of that technology, with gently curved legs, available in a range of finishes. He grew up immersed in art and design, with his grandfather and father both being sculptors. In creating this collection, he was inspired by Atlas, the Greek mythological character condemned for eternity to carry the heavens on his shoulders. Translating this into a physical object, Ascalon was intrigued by the challenge of making an elegant frame that could carry the weight of solid stone or thick glass. DWR Exclusive Educated throughout Europe, Gordon Guillaumier earned his bachelors and masters degrees in industrial design from Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) and the Domus Academy, respectively. From there, Guillaumier apprenticed with Baleri Associati before starting a collaboration with architect and designer Rodolfo Dordoni. In 2002, he opened his own design studio in Milan, specializing in product and interior design. His alluring Cage Table Collection (2010), like many of his other works, is marked by its subtly flowing geometry. These tables feature precision-shaped one-piece bent steel bases that transition smoothly into platforms for their laminate tabletops, which are created by infusing numerous layers of paper with thermosetting resin and subjecting them to high pressure and heat. Fashioned to withstand years of heavy use, laminate surfaces boast exceptional resistance to scratching, staining, temperature extremes and sunlight exposure. Theyre also a cinch to clean. After earning a degree in furniture design from Leeds Metropolitan University in England, Marc Krusin moved to Milan to launch his career. He cofounded the design group Codice 31 and has collaborated with Piero Lissoni, Kartell, Flos and Knoll. In 2008, the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design included Krusin in Europe 40 under 40, an annual list of the most promising and emerging design talent in Europe. Seeing a need for simple and sophisticated guest seating and occasional tables, he created his Krusin Coffee Table (2011) with glass or marble top. DWR Exclusive With a nod toward the midcentury designs of Arne Hovmand-Olsen, we created the Skagen Table Collection (2009), which includes a Coffee Table and set of Nesting Tables. The smooth edges and tapered shapes of the Coffee Table recall the popular surfboard tables of the 1960s, furthered by the fact that the tabletop appears to hover over the frame, supported by simple brass spacers. The lower shelf on the Coffee Table has a lip on all four sides to keep books and magazines in place, and the ends of the table are slightly sculpted, maintaining flow from one part to the next. As with any natural material, slight variations in the texture and color of the wood are to be expected and are not defects. Made in U.S.A. In a 1956 Time magazine cover story, Eero Saarinen said that the underside of typical tables and chairs makes a confusing, unrestful world and he was designing a new collection to clear up the slum of legs in the U.S. home. Later that year, he completed his Pedestal Table (1956), whose form was inspired by a drop of high-viscosity liquid. This iconic table features a cast-aluminum base with abrasion-resistant Rilsan finish and a solid marble, wood veneer or laminate tabletop. Each is stamped with the KnollStudio logo and Eero Saarinens signature. This is the authentic Saarinen Pedestal Table by Knoll. DWR Exclusive Atlanta-based industrial designer Chris Hardy, who made his design debut at Salone del Mobile in 2011, created the sculptural Helix Coffee Table (2012) for DWR. He gave it an odd number of legs and positioned the brass castings to radiate out from the center, resulting in a distinctive asymmetrical form that looks different from every angle. For Helix, I was inspired by the challenge of personalization in the modern world, and the increasing desire that we have to own objects that match our own styles and philosophies – in the way that art does, explains Hardy. Made by hand, the cast brass base has a natural finish thats soft and not highly polished; minor pitting and irregularities in the brass are typical of the casting process and are not defects. Thick and durable, the annealed glass tabletop is slowly cooled in a kiln to relieve internal stresses after its formed. Leveling glides adjust for uneven floors. George Nakashima regarded cabinetry and woodwork as a noble art form – a view evidenced in the pieces he designed for Knoll. His Splay-Leg Coffee Table (1946) exhibits his gifted sense of grain, texture and balance. The veneered walnut or hickory top has a reverse slip-matched cathedral grain, which allows the table to be placed facing either way. Mortise and tenon joints and brass hardware secure the top to the angled solid walnut legs, creating a simple, heirloom-quality modern classic. Nakashima referred to himself as a Japanese shaker, expressing the belief that his designs should be treated as everyday functional objects, not precious possessions. The Shaker influence can be noted in his extraordinary skill at crafting wood, a material he approached with great reverence, saying, A tree is our most intimate contact with nature. Though hes known as the master of chairs, Danish modernism pioneer Hans Wegner didnt entirely neglect the other categories. Applying his signature organic, minimal form, the Wegner Coffee Table (1954) is perfectly balanced on three legs, defying gravity with its visual lightness. The solid walnut table has a clear lacquer finish, allowing the natural warmth of the wood to come though and requiring minimal maintenance. Furniture that is too obviously designed, said Milo Baughman, is very interesting, but too often belongs only in museums. While we could certainly see his Drum Table (1970s) in a museum, it would earn its place there for its simplicity and lack of unnecessary ornamentation. Distilling the idea of an occasional table to its simplest form, Baughmans cylindrical design draws you in with its smoothness and warmth. It features seams that are painstakingly welded, ground and polished by hand until they blend in as much as possible. Once constructed, Drum is coated with bronze, oxidized and hand-relieved to give it a unique patina, eschewing the sterility of machine-made pieces. The expressive sculptural forms of Eero Saarinen’s furniture can also be found in his architecture, from the TWA Terminal at Kennedy Airport to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis to Dulles International Airport. In 1940, the Finnish American and his friend Charles Eames took first prize at the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at MoMA. Later that decade, when Florence Knoll challenged Saarinen to create a chair that she could curl up in, she had found the right candidate for the task. The Womb Chair (1946) has an enveloping form that continues to be one of the most iconic and recognized representations of midcentury organic modernism. By applying foam molded over a fiberglass shell, Saarinen created a single-piece form that perfectly facilitates a relaxed sitting posture.
