Design Within Reach Desks
DWR Exclusive As the founder of two start-ups – multidisciplinary design collective Non Specific Creativity, and product design firm Interior Newman and Kamali Ltd – Nazanin Kamali has worked on everything from restaurant design to art installations. She is a graduate of The Royal College of Art, where she studied furniture design, and spent some time working in the corporate world, managing store installations and visual branding for Aero retail stores in London. With such an impressive resume, it's not surprising that Kamali's work has been recognized with a Good Design Award and two Design Plus awards; she was also shortlisted for an Elle Decoration UK award. The simple forms of midcentury architecture inspired her Celine Desk (2008), which is crafted with turned and tapered solid hardwood legs and a single-drawer desktop. An open cubby on the right is a great place to stash papers and other necessities. Legs ship unattached; no tools necessary to screw them into the desktop. Made in Lithuania. Materials: Wood veneer over MDF; solid wood legs; white painted MDF drawer front. Measurements:H 29.75" W 43.5" D 21.75"
DWR Exclusive Designer Michele di Fonzo is the third generation of his family to celebrate and build upon the leather traditions his grandfather began in 1921. For nearly a century, this family of designers has been transforming leather into a versatile and modern product, drawing inspiration from other fields like fashion and luggage design, where leather is as much about structure as it is about aesthetics. The Bottega Desk (2013) is created using the most modern production methods and then finished by hand with skill, passion and care. The slender but strong steel frame is wrapped in smooth-as-silk stain-resistant leather thats hand-sewn to hug every angle and curve. The precise exposed stitch along all seams makes every Bottega Desk unique. Made in Italy. Materials: Split-grain leather with stain-resistant treatment; steel frame. Measurements:H 28.75" W 59.25" D 31.5"
DWR Exclusive Running into legendary designer Jens Risom in the halls at DWR headquarters was one of the many pleasures of working here. We took great pride in collaborating with him to bring the Risom Desk (2012) – the little one, as he called it – back into production in North America. Originally designed in 1968 for his own home in New Canaan, Conn., this small-space solution is really a writing surface, said Risom. Lets just call it a desk in quotations. Crafted of solid American walnut or oak and rich black or chocolate leather, its a handsome piece of decoration at which you sit, at which you study, at which you read books... if people do that anymore. The drawer interior has a removable solid wooden tray for desk supplies. Ships fully assembled. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Solid North American walnut or oak; black or chocolate leather with Crypton® protective finish. Measurements:H 29" W 42" D 22"
The Swag Leg Collection (1958), originally called Swaged-Leg, began when George Nelson asked Charles Pollock, Wouldnt it be beautiful to have some kind of sculptured leg on a piece of furniture? In pursuing this idea, the designers had to figure out how to make machine-formed metal legs that would be identical to one another for ease of production and readily removable for shipping. The solution turned out to be swaging, a manufacturing process that uses pressure to curve and taper a metal tube, which Pollock had experimented with when studying at Pratt. The legs became the foundation for a collection that includes an armchair, worktable and dining table. When the desk was reintroduced in 2007, a grommet was added to the back right corner for cable management. The brightly colored dividers create storage cubbies, and the center cubby fits most laptops. Removable organizer trays in the drawers keep stationery organized, and adjustable glides ensure a level work surface. Ships flat; simple assembly required. This is the authentic Swag Leg Desk by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Steel legs; solid walnut; walnut veneer; laminate writing surface; particleboard; formed plastic organizer trays; leveling floor glides. Measurements:H 34.5" W 39" D 28.5" Desktop H 29.5"
Designer Leon Ransmeier established his own New York-based studio, Ransmeier Inc., in 2010, and his work has since been featured by the likes of MoMA and Cooper Hewitt. To Ransmeier, fulfilling design is all about breaking down a single challenge into a series of smaller tasks that can be considered and enjoyed at length. If one cannot enjoy the details, he reasons, one will never find satisfaction in the whole. Inspired by efficient aeronautical forms, he set out to eliminate the superfluous when creating his AGL Table Group (2012). AGL – an apropos abbreviation of above ground level – is a lightweight yet strong piece that serves equally well in a variety of residential and commercial spaces. Designed to be warm and welcoming, it features a sleek top with a rich finish and carefully beveled edge thats naturally conducive to resting ones arms. Theres something very inviting and very hospitable about the softness of the tables edge, says Ransmeier. The edge shape, he further explains, is about making people comfortable, physically and socially. Made in U.S.A. Materials: White ash, ebony-stained ash or santos palisander veneer top; powder-coated aluminum base; leveling floor glides. Measurements:H 28.5" W 75" D 38" H 28.5" W 95" D 48"
DWR Exclusive For more than 30 years, Giulio Lazzotti has maintained a diverse practice encompassing architecture, interior design and furniture design. He received the Torre Guinigi prize for his design for the historical center of Pietrasanta, Italy, and he is internationally recognized for his work in marble – so much so that he often teaches at the Academy of Art in Carrara, Italy (home to the famous white Carrara marble quarries). When he designed our Quovis Collection, developed with an Italian restaurant equipment manufacturer, he set the standard for quality stainless steel utility furniture. The generously proportioned Quovis Table (2001) is easy to clean and maintain, will not rust and is constructed to endure years of use. Able to withstand the corrosive action of various acids found in food and chemicals, as well as having a high strength-to-weight ratio, the table is suited to a high-traffic café or restaurant, darkroom or kitchen. Lockable casters provide stability. Assembly required. Made in Italy. Materials: Stainless steel; lockable casters. Measurements:H 29.5" W 60" D 29.5"
Dan Grabowski grew up getting a practical education in backyard industrial design. When my dad needed to create or repair something, he would design a solution, and then we would go off together and build it, he recalls. In college, he studied the work of sculptor Harry Bertoia, and thats when it clicked for me – the connection between sculpture and industrial design. Applying that connection, Grabowski strives to solve problems in smart ways using simple, uncluttered lines. His EverywhereTM Flip-Top Table (2011) is smart in every way, its strength, versatility and trim profile making it a great option for conference rooms, offices or home craft rooms. Suitable for residential and commercial use. Constructed of 67% recycled material. Backed by a 12-year manufacturers warranty. Assembly required. Made in U.S.A. EverywhereTM is available in two additional configurations: The EverywhereTM Conference Table and the EverywhereTM Rectangular Table. Materials: Plastic laminate top and edges over MDF; white powder-coated steel base; leveling floor glides. Measurements:H 28.5" W 60" D 24"
George Nelson was an architect, designer, writer and teacher, as well as Herman Miller’s design director from 1945 to 1972. He did his work at home and in his office (and probably every place in between), and his lack of distinction between those spaces shows in the multifunctional furniture he designed. The X-Leg Desk (1950) is a versatile table that tackles dining, entertaining and working with equal effectiveness. Its large rectangular top provides ample usable space, with sturdy tubular steel legs that offer great support. Accommodating by design, X-Leg pairs well with everything from dining chairs to task chairs. Adjustable glides adapt to uneven floor surfaces. This is not a folding table. This is the authentic Nelson X-Leg Desk produced by Herman Miller, Inc. Nelson is a trademark of Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. Available finishes: Walnut top with chrome legs; santos palisander top with black legs; white laminate top with ash band and white legs. Materials: Walnut veneer, santos palisander veneer or white laminate top (latter has ash veneer edge band); tubular steel legs with trivalent chrome or powder-coated finish; adjustable floor glides. Measurements:H 28.5" W 60" D 30"

DWR Exclusive Owner of more than 400 patents, self-taught inventor Poul Cadovius constantly sought smarter solutions for everything from furniture to bus shelters to sailboats. In the mid-1940s, he devised an ingenious wall-mounted shelving system to save floor space: the Royal System (1948). After the systems introduction, Cadovius three-employee firm soon became the largest furniture manufacturer in Denmark, exporting to countries worldwide. In 2010, Cadovius gave the rights to produce the design to Danish company dk3. A year later, he died at the age of 99, but the project continued under the watchful eye of his widow, Evy, who made sure it stayed true to her husbands high standards. The most successful furniture collection in Denmark for three decades, the Royal System is back in production and available only at DWR. Use it in entryways, living rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms – wherever you want to lift space-stealing furniture off the floor and have more room for living. All pieces are finely crafted using time-honored techniques perfected over centuries by Danish woodworkers. Wall mounting not included with In-Home Delivery service. Made in Denmark. Shelves will flex very slightly over time but will still retain their structural integrity. We recommend a weight limit of 35 pounds per shelf to maintain a straight profile. Unit B includes a locking desk cabinet that can be mounted on the left or right. For additional storage, add the Extension Unit. Materials: Solid walnut or soaped oak rails; MDF with walnut or soaped oak veneer shelves and cabinet; raw brass hangers (with walnut, meant to patina over time) or stainless steel hangers (with oak). Italian designer Franco Albini, considered to be among the most important Neo-Rationalist designers, also happened to be the first European commissioned by Knoll. Much of his furniture, including the lightly scaled Albini Desk (1938), was designed to make use of the most inexpensive raw materials available during World War II, when other materials were scarce. Using just steel, glass and wood, his desk demonstrates a striking clarity and balance, unencumbered by extraneous ornamentation. When used as a freestanding piece, its simple design is appealing from every angle. The floating two-drawer pedestal mounts to the right side of the desk. This is the authentic Albini Desk produced by Knoll. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Chrome-finished steel square tube legs and frame; ebonized oak or white lacquer pedestal drawer; 0.5" clear tempered glass. Measurements:H 27.5" W 48" D 26"
