Design Within Reach Tuuci Ocean Master Manta Shade
Design Within Reach Tuuci Ocean Master Manta Shade 

Inspired by the graceful flow of a manta ray through the ocean, Tuuci Manta (2001) offers you protection from the elements without obstructing the view. Dougan Clarke, a consummate sailor who spent over a decade working with sails, rigging and boat design, knows what will stand up to sun, rain, salt and wind, and he designs his shades accordingly. Manta is easy to use and maintain but constructed of replaceable marine-grade components to ensure a lifetime of serviceability. It features a clever cam cleat and pulley system to raise and lower the shade with ease. I sought to redefine what was previously known as an umbrella, says Clarke. The resulting shade sculptures embody both form and function. As with other shades, keep these in closed position during storms and when not in use. DWR is not responsible for accidents or damage caused by misuse or weather. Commercial quality. Made in U.S.A. Shade color: Natural. Looking for a shade in another color? Contact us at 1.800.944.2233 for a rainbow of additional options. Aluma-Teak gives you the warmth of hardwood without the worry. Design Within Reach Kong Barstool with Choice of Arms 

Leave it to designer Philippe Starck to find inspiration in the furniture of Versailles when creating a chair for a Chinese restaurant in Paris. The Kong Barstool (2002) is handcrafted in Pennsylvania using the same 77-step process Emeco first developed for its Navy Chair. While the shape of Kong recalls more delicate French designs, the manufacturing of this chair gives it an ability to stand up to even the most unruly of patrons. A proprietary heat treatment makes the aluminum three times stronger than steel, and all Emeco chairs and stools are tested to withstand 1,700 pounds of weight (which is good to know in case that restaurant in Paris is very popular). Design Within Reach Eames Molded Fiberglass Dowel-Leg Side Chair (DFSW)
Design Within Reach Eames Molded Fiberglass Dowel-Leg Side Chair (DFSW) 

Charles and Ray Eames believed "design is a method of action," and they continually updated their work as new materials became available. "The chair that Charles and Ray were designing," explains grandson Eames Demetrios, "is the chair that's made tomorrow ." The duo originally designed their molded chair in metal and entered it as a prototype in MoMA's 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design, then refashioned it in light yet strong fiberglass just two years later. In the 1980s, after determining fiberglass production was detrimental to the environment, Herman Miller ceased production to explore more sustainable options, eventually choosing recyclable polypropylene. The company never quite forgot about fiberglass, however, and it recently began researching greener production methods. The Eames Molded Fiberglass Chair (1950) is the end result, constructed using a cleaner process but true to the original with its beloved variegated surface. This reintroduced version comes in a range of reformulated semi-gloss color pigments that faithfully reproduce the vintage ones. Its deep seat pocket and waterfall edge keep you comfortable by reducing pressure on the backs of your thighs. The seat back is left unfinished to maintain a slightly rough natural texture for easier gripping with your hands. This is an authentic Eames product by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. DFSW stands for dining-height fiberglass side chair with wood base. Made of 99% recyclable materials and covered by Herman Miller's take-back program for environmentally sound recycling (should you ever wish to part with this chair). Materials: Fiberglass-reinforced plastic seat; maple, walnut, ebony-stained ash or white ash dowels; black or white powder-coated wire. The process for making shells and the nature of fiberglass mean that each shell is unique and can possess traits such as tiny cavities in the surface, small points of lighter or darker color, or faint circular shadows where base attaches to shell. Eero Saarinen called himself a “form giver,” and everything he designed – from the Gateway Arch in St. Louis to his Womb Chair to his Pedestal Table – had a strong sculptural quality. “The underside of typical tables and chairs makes a confusing, unrestful world,” said Saarinen. In a 1956 cover story in Time magazine, he announced that he was designing a collection to “clear up the slum of legs in the U.S. home.” Later that year, he completed his Pedestal Table Collection, followed by his Tulip Chair Collection (1956), both of which feature cast-aluminum bases inspired by a drop of high-viscosity liquid. Design Within Reach Theatre Ottoman
Design Within Reach Theatre Ottoman 

DWR Exclusive As a theater and dance student at the University of West Virginia, Ted Boerner developed an intuitive sense of the body and the space it occupies – an awareness that now lends his furniture its genial angles and careful proportions. He attended NYU for grad school, and began his career as a set and costume designer. Propping scenes and imagining the things that characters would surround themselves with made me think about how important furniture is to people, says the designer. Modern sofas often claim minimalist appeal, but few can also tout the comfort of the Theatre Collection (2001). Designed to accommodate the human body with studied proportions and simple geometry, Theatres comfort stems from its form rather than excessive layers of stuffing. A gleaming chromed steel base runs the entire depth of the design, and welted seams lend strength and definition to the upholstery. Ships with legs unattached to save on packing materials. Design Within Reach Eames Upholstered Molded Plywood Lounge Chair (LCM) 

A refreshing variant of the LCM (1946), the Upholstered LCM sports Kvadrat Divina fabric on its front side. This iconic chair began as an experiment in the Eameses apartment, where they were molding plywood in what they called the Kazam! Machine. The machine pressed thin sheets of wood veneer against a heated membrane that was inflated by a bicycle pump. Humble beginnings for what would become one of the worlds most widely recognized and highly coveted chairs. Low-slung, with an expertly crafted molded seat and back (no bike pumps are used today), this chair cradles you in a comfortable position. Its form relates directly to the human body and holds no secrets as to how it succeeds technically. The slender rod base provides superior strength, while rubber shock mounts buffer against jarring movement. This original is an authentic product of Herman Miller, Inc. When they designed the interior of St. Peters Church in New York City, Lella and Massimo Vignelli applied their signature approach of paring away everything but the essentials to arrive at the simplest possible solution. That simplicity is most evident in the design of the altar, which is made of three massive blocks of laminated wood. When asked why the altar is so thick, Lella said, Its Gods table. It has to have some power! The design became a motif throughout the churchs interior, applied to benches and even pews. The pleasing proportions of the altar can also be found in the Vignelli Bench (2005), which Lella and Massimo created for use in their own home. Imagine, says Philippe Starck, a guy who takes a humble broom and starts to clean the workshop, and with this dust he makes new magic. The dust that Starck refers to is reclaimed polypropylene and wood fiber, two of the materials used to create his Broom Chair (2012). Starck drew the shape of this reclaimed, repurposed and recyclable chair in 2003, but it took a decade to design the chair in these eco-friendly materials. The Broom Chair made its debut at the 2012 Salone del Mobile in Milan, and as soon as we saw it, we knew it belonged in our assortment. Durable, comfortable, colorful and unique in how it makes use of normally discarded materials, Broom is a smart solution that literally sweeps up the waste from the industrial manufacturing cycle. Suitable for use indoors and out. This is the authentic Broom Chair by Emeco. Made in U.S.A. Made of a new composite of discarded industrial materials, reclaimed even before they enter the long cycle that most recycled materials have to undergo. Design Within Reach Chieftains Chair

With distinctive shapes inspired by primitive weaponry and a seat that appears suspended above the frame, the sculptural form of the Chieftains Chair (1949) changed the future of Danish design. Finn Juhl created the chair for the 1949 Cabinetmakers Guild in Copenhagen. During the exhibition, King Frederick IX sat in the chair, causing a journalist to suggest calling it the Kings Chair. But Juhl didnt like how pretentious that sounded and said, You had better call it a chieftains chair, which the journalist did. (At some point the apostrophe was dropped.) Design Within Reach Finn Chaise
Design Within Reach Finn Chaise 

DWR Exclusive Danish designers Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen and Kasper Rønn named their company Norm to express their dedication to working with Danish norms and standards refined over hundreds of years, says Bjerre-Poulsen, rather than rejecting them in the endless search for new. The sincerity of their approach – bypassing flashy design for good design – shows in the quality of their work. These are products that endure both physically and aesthetically. The Finn Collection (2013) they developed for Design Within Reach is directly tied to their philosophy in that it was built on a passion for details, tactility in design and creating for the need. Norm products never crave to be anything but what they are, says Rønn. That is the combination of utility, purity and quiet beauty. The teak frames can be oiled to maintain their original color or left alone to develop a beautiful silvery patina. Removable cushions are clad in UV-protected, mildew-resistant Sunbrella fabric to withstand the elements. Seating can be used with or without cushions. Weight capacity: 300 pounds per seating area. Made in Indonesia. The Finn Collection has been honored with a 2015 Architizer A+ Jury Award – selected by 300-plus international architecture and design leaders – and a 2014 Chicago Athenaeum Good Design® Award. Design Within Reach Eames Upholstered Molded Fiberglass Dowel-Leg Armchair (DFAW)
Design Within Reach Eames Upholstered Molded Fiberglass Dowel-Leg Armchair (DFAW) 

Charles and Ray Eames believed design is a method of action, and they continually updated their work as new materials became available. The chair that Charles and Ray were designing, explains grandson Eames Demetrios, is the chair thats made tomorrow . The duo originally designed their molded chair in metal and entered it as a prototype in MoMAs 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design, then refashioned it in light yet strong fiberglass just two years later. DFAW stands for dining-height fiberglass armchair with wood base. Made of 98% recyclable materials and covered by Herman Millers take-back program for environmentally sound recycling (should you ever wish to part with this chair). Materials: Fiberglass-reinforced plastic seat; maple, walnut or ebony-stained ash dowels; black powder-coated wire; Hopsak upholstery (100% recycled polyester). The process for making shells and the nature of fiberglass mean that each shell is unique and can possess traits such as tiny cavities in the surface, small points of lighter or darker color, or faint circular shadows where base attaches to shell. Design Within Reach Series 3300 Armchair
Design Within Reach Series 3300 Armchair 

Arne Jacobsen conceived of a complete and holistic aesthetic for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. Serving as the principle architect for it, he also created much of the furnishings – including the Series 3300 Collection (1956). Cool and formal, it offered a clean-lined counterpoint to the curvaceous and organic forms of his swiveling EggTM and SwanTM chairs, which were also designed specifically for the SAS. Jacobsen had a very personal connection to this collection, as it was based on a sofa that he had created for his own home. Displaying Jacobsens unfailing sense of line and proportion, the Series 3300 is a further example of his ability to create timeless classics. Original design and licensed manufacture by Republic of Fritz Hansen. Made in Poland. Compactly scaled. Canted back and deep seats offer enduring comfort. Materials: Chrome-plated steel frame; cold-cured foam; wooden frame; leather or Gabriel® Fame upholstery, 95% wool, 5% polyamide. Measurements:H 28.5" W 28.75" D 31.25" Seat H 14.25" Arm H 21.5"

Design Within Reach Eames Soft Pad Executive Chair with Pneumatic Lift 

Charles and Ray Eames had ideas about making a better world, one in which things were designed to fulfill the practical needs of ordinary people and bring greater pleasure to our lives. Their Soft Pad Collection (1969) of luxuriously padded chairs evolved from their Aluminum Group Collection, which began as a special project for Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard, who needed seating for a house they were designing for J. Irwin Miller. With the addition of plush seat cushions, the Soft Pad Collection retains the style of the earlier one but adds significant comfort. We have to take pleasure seriously, said Charles Eames. No matter what the Eameses did, they did it with passion and imagination, and in the process, they changed lives. This is an authentic Eames Soft Pad Chair by Herman Miller. Backed by a 12-year manufacturer's warranty. Made in U.S.A. Constructed of 67% recycled materials and 90% recyclable.
