Design Within Reach Bertoia Two-Tone Diamond Lounge Chair with Seat Pad
Design Within Reach Bertoia Two-Tone Diamond Lounge Chair with Seat Pad

With his iconic seating collection, Harry Bertoia transformed industrial wire rods into a new furniture form. The events that made this work possible began a decade earlier at Cranbrook Academy of Art, when Bertoia met Florence Knoll (then Florence Schust). Years later, the Italian-born designer was invited to work for Florence and her husband, Hans Knoll. Bertoia was given the freedom to work on whatever suited him, without being held to a strict design agenda, and the result of this arrangement was the Bertoia Seating Collection (1952). These extremely strong yet airy chairs are sculpted out of steel rods with a delicate filigreed appearance. In his art, Bertoia experimented with open forms and metal work, and his chairs were an extension of that work. If you look at the chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture, said Bertoia. Space passes through them. After designing his seating collection, Bertoia returned to focusing mostly on sculpture. This is an authentic Bertoia Diamond Lounge Chair produced by Knoll, with the Knoll logo stamped into its base. Seat pad is secured with metal snaps. Chair made in Italy; seat pad made in U.S.A. Materials: Welded steel rods; polished chrome finish with chrome connections or bonded Rilsan® finish with stainless steel connections; vinyl seat pad (65% polyester, 35% rayon). Design Within Reach Noguchi Table
Design Within Reach Noguchi Table

Following his apprenticeship with the legendary Constantin Brancusi, sculptor Isamu Noguchi began to experiment in environmental design, theatrical sets – he was the only designer that choreographer Martha Graham would work with – and, eventually, product design. He created his first furniture prototypes for Herman Miller in 1942 and went on to work with companies such as Steuben and Zenith. The Noguchi Table (1948) conceals nothing, revealing everything about the nature of simplicity. Two smoothly shaped pieces of solid wood interlock to form a tripod that supports a thick glass tabletop. The base is available in black, walnut, natural cherry and white ash, the latter of which is finished with a process that arrests the wood in its freshly cut state, resulting in a creamy white color that will not turn yellow over time. This is the authentic Noguchi Table by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. The configuration of this table is a registered trademark. To distinguish the real Noguchi table from the cheap knockoffs, Herman Miller has etched Noguchis signature on the longest edge of the glass top and on a medallion on the underside of the base. Materials: Solid wood base in Noguchi black, walnut, natural cherry or white ash; 0.75" thick glass. Measurements:H 15.75" W 50" D 36"

Design Within Reach Poet Sofa
Design Within Reach Poet Sofa

Finn Juhl designed the Poet Sofa (1941) for use in his own home, located in Charlottenlund, a rural area north of Copenhagen. Today, the Juhl house – which is an early example of open-plan design and offers views to its garden from every room – is part of the Ordrupgaard Museum. Being connected to the landscape was something that Juhl both lived and practiced, and the influence is notable in the organic forms of his furniture. Being a true sensualist, Juhl created his furniture to be comfortable, made with the best craftsmanship traditions and showing an appreciation of materials. This is the authentic Poet Sofa by Onecollection. Made in Denmark. The color combinations are: beige with teal cushion and beige tufted buttons; grey with red cushion and red tufted buttons; tan with brown cushion and brown tufted buttons; charcoal with grey cushion and grey tufted buttons. For Cream, Charcoal, Gold, Indigo and Red, the frame, cushion and buttons are all the same color. Materials: Danish beech wood, Swedish pine wood and Masonite® frame; walnut legs; web suspension; canvas-linen bottom cover; 100% recyclable Pantera foam and cotton fiber padding; hand-sewn double-stitched fabric upholstery. Design Within Reach Eames Lounge Chair
Design Within Reach Eames Lounge Chair

Charles and Ray Eames had ideas about making a better world, one in which things were designed to bring greater pleasure to our lives. Their iconic Eames Lounge Chair (1956) began with a desire to create a chair with the warm, receptive look of a well-used first basemans mitt. The result has become the consummate lounge. In continuous production since its introduction, the Eames Lounge Chair is widely considered one of the most significant designs of the 20th century. Pairing soft, inviting leather with the sleek form of molded wood, this piece was the culmination of the Eameses efforts to create a club chair using the molded plywood technology that they pioneered in the 40s. Even today, each piece is assembled by hand to ensure the highest level of quality and craftsmanship, and youll be pleased to discover that this chair gets even better with use and age. The configuration of this chair is a registered trademark, and this is the authentic Eames Lounge Chair by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. Design Within Reach Theatre Two-Seater Sofa
Design Within Reach Theatre Two-Seater Sofa

DWR Exclusive As a theater and dance student at the University of West Virginia, Ted Boerner developed an intuitive sense of the body and the space it occupies – an awareness that now lends his furniture its genial angles and careful proportions. He attended NYU for grad school and began his career as a set and costume designer. Propping scenes and imagining the things that characters would surround themselves with made me think about how important furniture is to people, says the designer. Modern sofas often claim minimalist appeal, but few can also tout the comfort of the Theatre Collection (2001). Designed to accommodate the human body with studied proportions and simple geometry, Theatres comfort stems from its form rather than excessive layers of stuffing. With a gently angled backrest, full seat depth and elevated armrests, Boerners signature artisanal details are evident throughout. A gleaming chromed steel base runs the entire depth of the design, and welted seams lend strength and definition to the upholstery. Ships with legs unattached to save on packing materials. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Kiln-dried hardwood corner-blocked frame; unidirectional web suspension; high-density, high-resiliency foam cushions with Dacron® wrap; chrome-plated steel base; fabric or leather upholstery. Charles and Ray Eames believed that design is a method of action, and they continually updated their work as new materials became available. Their Molded Plastic Chairs were originally designed in metal and entered as a prototype in MoMAs 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design. They then changed the material to fiberglass in 1950, and today this rocker is made of recyclable polypropylene. The chair that Charles and Ray were designing, explains grandson Eames Demetrios, is the chair thats made tomorrow . Since 1955, every Herman Miller employee welcoming a baby into his or her life has been offered this rocker or a $100 savings bond. More than 90% have chosen the rocker. Design Within Reach Pelican Chair
Design Within Reach Pelican Chair

It is shocking to think of Finn Juhl designing this sculptural chair in 1940 – that was more than 75 years ago, and the Pelican Chair is still out there by todays standards. With graceful curves that befriend the body and wrap the sitter in its embrace, the Pelican is true to Juhls idea that a chair is not just a product of decorative art in a space, it is a form and a space in itself. And while the influence of contemporary sculpture is clear, Juhl was quick to clarify that furniture is furniture, not sculpture. The upholstery is hand-sewn onto the frame; some colors (see below) are finished with tufted buttons. This is the authentic Pelican Chair by Onecollection. Made in Denmark. Colors with tufted buttons: grey with red cushion and red buttons; teal with light blue cushion and light blue buttons; cream with leather sand cushion and leather sand buttons. Materials: Steel frame molded in hard cellular plastic and MDI; walnut legs; canvas-linen bottom cover; 100% recyclable Pantera foam and cotton fiber padding; hand-sewn double-stitched upholstery. Design Within Reach Milo Baughman Recliner 74

DWR Exclusive Furniture that is too obviously designed is very interesting, said designer Milo Baughman, but too often belongs only in museums. A firm believer that good design can have a positive influence in our lives, Baughman knew how to design sophisticated, sexy chairs – even when it came to a Recliner (1966). Recognized as one of the originators of the California modern movement, Baughman began his career as a custom furniture designer, and in 1953 he joined forces with Thayer Coggin, the founder of the North Carolina company that is still the exclusive manufacturer of Baughmans work. For five decades, Baughman designed clean, sophisticated and easy-to-live-with furniture, and we worked closely with Thayer Coggin to bring this Recliner back into production. Baughmans work was included in High Styles: Twentieth Century American Design at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1985. In 1987, he was inducted into the Furniture Design Hall of Fame.
