Design Within Reach Series 3300TM Three-Seater Sofa
Design Within Reach Series 3300TM Three-Seater Sofa

Arne Jacobsen conceived of a complete and holistic aesthetic for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. Serving as the principle architect for it, he also created much of the furnishings – including the Series 3300 Collection (1956). Cool and formal, it offered a clean-lined counterpoint to the curvaceous and organic forms of his swiveling Egg and Swan chairs, which were also designed specifically for the SAS. Jacobsen had a very personal connection to this collection, as it was based on a sofa that he had created for his own home. Displaying Jacobsen’s unfailing sense of line and proportion, the Series 3300 is a further example of his ability to create timeless classics. Original design and licensed manufacture by Republic of Fritz Hansen. Made in Poland. Compactly scaled. Canted back and deep seats offer enduring comfort. Materials: Chrome-plated steel frame; cold-cured foam; wooden frame; leather or Gabriel® Fame (95% wool, 5% polyamide) upholstery. Measurements:H 28.5" W 71.75" D 31.25" Seat H 14.25" Arm H 21.5"

Design Within Reach EggTM Chair
Design Within Reach EggTM Chair

Form follows function, and nowhere is that more apparent than in a sculpted chair that anticipates the curves of the human body. Arne Jacobsen designed the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, and for its busy lobby, he created the biomorphic Egg (1958). With this chair, Jacobsen embraced new materials that allowed him to shape fluid curves and single-piece molded shells. At a time when others were experimenting with bent tubular steel, Jacobsen focused on the upholstered armchair, believing a solution existed that was still true to modern ideals. Indeed, he met that goal. Set on a rotating base, the Egg Chair allows sitters to swivel toward a conversation area or away from others if privacy is desired. It also tilts back for relaxed lounging. This is the authentic Egg Chair manufactured by Republic of Fritz Hansen. Made in Poland. The Egg Chair tilts and swivels. Finely upholstered, the fabric or leather is hand-sewn onto the frame. Materials: Fiberglass-reinforced polyurethane foam shell; satin-chromed steel column; injection-molded aluminum base; fabric or leather upholstery. Gabriel® Fame® upholstery: 95% wool, 5% polyamide. Maharam Kvadrat® Tonus upholstery: 90% wool, 10% Helanca®. Basel upholstery: 90% new wool, 10% nylon; Sorensen leather piping. Leather upholstery: full-grain leather or cowhide. Design Within Reach Chieftains Chair
Design Within Reach Chieftains Chair

With distinctive shapes inspired by primitive weaponry and a seat that appears suspended above the frame, the sculptural form of the Chieftains Chair (1949) changed the future of Danish design. Finn Juhl created the chair for the 1949 Cabinetmakers Guild in Copenhagen. During the exhibition, King Frederick IX sat in the chair, causing a journalist to suggest calling it the Kings Chair. But Juhl didnt like how pretentious that sounded and said, You had better call it a chieftains chair, which the journalist did. (At some point the apostrophe was dropped.) This original is an authentic, fully licensed product of House of Finn JuhlTM. Made in Denmark. Finn Juhl believed that the craftsmans ability to form is probably the same as that of a sculptor. The Chieftains Chair received the Danish Design Award in the Classics category for 2012. Materials: Teak and walnut frame; leather upholstery. Measurements:H 37.5" W 39" D 34.5" Seat H 13.5"

Design Within Reach LC3 Grand Modele Three-Seat Sofa with Down Cushions
Design Within Reach LC3 Grand Modele Three-Seat Sofa with Down Cushions

The Le Corbusier group referred to their LC2 and LC3 Collections (1928) as cushion baskets, which they designed as a modernist response to the traditional club chair. These pieces reverse the standard structures of sofas and chairs by having frames that are externalized. With thick, resilient pillows resting within the steel frames, the idea was to offer all the comfort of a padded surface while applying the elegant minimalism and industrial rationale of the International Style. The resulting aesthetic of the simple tubular structure is remarkably relevant to how we live today, almost 90 years later. Each piece is signed and numbered and, as a product of Cassinas Masters Collection, is manufactured by Cassina under exclusive worldwide license from the Le Corbusier Foundation. Made in Italy. The differences between the collections are that the LC2 is more compactly scaled, and the LC3 has the option of either down- or Dacron-wrapped cushions. Materials: Chromed steel frame; nylon webbing; multi-density composite foam cushions with down wrap; top-grain semi-aniline leather upholstery; nickel-plated steel glides. Design Within Reach BassamFellows Daybed
Design Within Reach BassamFellows Daybed

This Daybed (2004) was designed to be seen in the round, says Craig Bassam, by which he means that it can be seen and used from all sides. Such an approach isnt surprising from a design team living in a glass house where furniture is visible from every angle, whether youre inside or out. The house is the work of Philip Johnson, the architect who designed the Glass House for his own private residence in New Canaan, Connecticut. To see how seamlessly this Daybed (and all the furniture BassamFellows has created) works in a space designed by the iconic Johnson makes it very clear that these are the next icons – destined to become highly collectible. Bassam is an architect whose career started with Bruce Eeles, a disciple of Marcel Breuer. His partner, Scott Fellows, is a Harvard MBA who transformed the Swiss firm Bally. Together they are BassamFellows, described as the design worlds A-team by The Times of London . This fully handcrafted Daybed is made of solid American black walnut that is sustainably and locally harvested. The leather cushions are hand-stitched with inverted seams; the backrest adjusts to three positions. Made in U.S.A. Design Within Reach Bertoia AsymmetricTM Chaise with Full Cover
Design Within Reach Bertoia AsymmetricTM Chaise with Full Cover

With his iconic seating collection, Harry Bertoia transformed industrial wire rods into a new furniture form. The events that made this work possible began a decade earlier at Cranbrook Academy of Art, when Bertoia met Florence Knoll (then Florence Schust). Years later, the Italian-born designer was invited to work for Florence and her husband, Hans Knoll. Bertoia was given the freedom to work on whatever suited him, without being held to a strict design agenda, and the result of this arrangement was the Bertoia Seating Collection (1952). Featuring a delicate filigreed appearance that’s supremely strong, these airy seats are sculpted out of steel rods. In his art, Bertoia experimented with open forms and metal work, and these chairs were an extension of that work. “If you look at the chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture,” said Bertoia. “Space passes through them.” After designing his seating collection, Bertoia returned to focusing mostly on sculpture. This is the authentic Bertoia Asymmetric Chaise produced by Knoll. The Knoll logo is stamped into its base. Available with seat pad or full cover. Chair made in Italy; seat pad made in U.S.A. This masterpiece of midcentury experimental design remained a prototype for more than 50 years. Knoll brought it into production in 2005. White frame can be used outdoors with limited exposure to the elements. Chrome frame is not for outdoor use. Vinyl seat pad can be used outdoors and is secured to chair with metal snaps. DWR Exclusive Shortly before Finn Juhl became a world-renowned name, he was a self-taught furniture designer and trained architect who had just opened his own office. Working in collaboration with master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder, the pair was the buzz of the 1945 Cabinetmakers Guild exhibition with their expressive, sculptural pieces. One such item was the Model 45 Armchair (1945), which broke from tradition by freeing the upholstered areas from the wood frame. With the Model 45, Juhl refined the type of easy chair that he had been working on for many years; creating the type of elegant, tantalizing expression for which this designer is still without rival. This original is an authentic, fully licensed product of House of Finn JuhlTM. Made in Denmark. Finn Juhl made his U.S. debut in 1951, at the Good Design exhibit in Chicago and at MoMA in New York. When Juhl was 39, he was the architect appointed to represent Denmark in creating the interior of a meeting hall at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Design Within Reach Womb Settee
Design Within Reach Womb Settee

The expressive sculptural forms of Eero Saarinens furniture can still be found to this very day in his architecture, from the TWA Terminal at Kennedy Airport to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis to Dulles International Airport. In 1940, the Finnish American and his friend Charles Eames took first prize at the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at MoMA. Later that decade, Saarinen developed his fit-for-two Womb Settee (1948) for his first big architectural commission, the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan – a massive 25-building complex that required furnishings for over 5,000 people. By applying foam molded over a fiberglass shell, Saarinen created a single-piece form that perfectly facilitates a relaxed sitting posture. Of the clumsy oversized models seen elsewhere that Settee was designed to replace, Saarinen said, These dreadnoughts disappeared from modern interiors partly because they were designed for an era that tried to impress by sheer mass, but he saw the robust forms as timeless. The need for such chairs has not passed. Today, more than ever, we need to relax. This is the authentic Womb Settee by Knoll. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Steel rod frame with black powder-coated finish; reinforced fiberglass shell; plywood platform; polyester fiber padding with foam core; stainless steel and nylon glides. DWR Exclusive Owner of more than 400 patents, self-taught inventor Poul Cadovius constantly sought smarter solutions for everything from furniture to bus shelters to sailboats. In the mid-1940s, he devised an ingenious wall-mounted shelving system to save floor space: the Royal System (1948). After the systems introduction, Cadovius three-employee firm soon became the largest furniture manufacturer in Denmark, exporting to countries worldwide. In 2010, Cadovius gave the rights to produce the design to Danish company dk3. A year later, he died at the age of 99, but the project continued under the watchful eye of his widow, Evy, who made sure it stayed true to her husbands high standards. The most successful furniture collection in Denmark for three decades, the Royal System is back in production and available only at DWR. Use it in entryways, living rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms – wherever you want to lift space-stealing furniture off the floor and have more room for living. Design Within Reach NelsonTM Thin Edge Buffet
Design Within Reach NelsonTM Thin Edge Buffet

George Nelson was the design director at Herman Miller from 1945 to 1972. His influence over three decades is what made the Michigan-based company what it is today. Not only did Nelson recruit Charles and Ray Eames and Isamu Noguchi, but he also created a portfolio of work without which the history of modern design would be incomplete. Together with designers Irving Harper and John Pile, Nelson introduced the Thin Edge Collection (1952), originally called the Rosewood Case Series, as a refined version of the Basic Cabinet Series from 1946. Striking characteristics include the placement of the wood veneer and the especially thin edges, hence the later name. Made today with environmentally sustainable veneers and 85% recycled materials, Thin Edge takes advantage of the latest manufacturing technologies without compromising its original look and feel. Inside the two-door cabinet there are two adjustable shelves. Self-leveling glides adjust to uneven floor surfaces. This is the authentic Thin Edge Buffet produced by Herman Miller, Inc.
