DWR Exclusive Born in Mainz, Germany, in 1924, Bernard Schottlander fled to England as a Jewish refugee in 1939. He worked as a welder for a short stint during the war before delving into sculpture at Leeds College of Art and the Anglo-French art center in St. Johns Wood. A year later, he went on to open his own design studio and began creating new pieces in limited editions. An admirer of Alexander Calder, the American sculptor perhaps best known as originator of the mobile, Schottlander created his Mantis Collection (1951) as an homage. Movement being intrinsic to his work, he devised clever adjustable frames constructed of strong yet flexible steel rods combined with counterweights (except for the sconce, which has a fixed design). He then fabricated shades from aluminum using repoussé and chasing techniques, relying on his trained sculptors eye to produce beautifully flowing shapes that set the symmetrical and asymmetrical in opposition. His lamps – much like his idols mobiles – appear to defy gravity with their floating forms. Bulb (not included): LED, CFL or incandescent; E12 base; 40W max. This is the authentic Mantis Collection. Made in China. Materials: Painted steel arm and base; painted aluminum shade; nickeled brass ball joint. Measurements:H 8.25" D 17.75" Shade Diameter 8.75", 3.5 lbs.

Design Within Reach NelsonTM Thin Edge Bed
Design Within Reach NelsonTM Thin Edge Bed 

The process of bringing the Nelson Thin Edge Bed (1954) back into production began at the Herman Miller Archives, where engineers carefully studied vintage pieces and original drawings. In keeping with Nelsons vision for a collection capable of adapting to the times, this bed is now available in larger sizes – which werent commonly available in the 1950s – in addition to the original twin and full. Solid ash slats have replaced springs to accommodate an invention that also didnt exist in Nelsons day: memory-foam mattresses. Finishes have been updated to reflect new technologies and the aesthetic preferences of todays consumer: Walnut replaces stained ash, and white ash replaces the original birch. The result is unmistakably Nelson – iconic designs of exceptional simplicity and clarity. This is the authentic Nelson Thin Edge Bed by Herman Miller. Made in Malaysia. Twin, full and queen platforms ship fully assembled. King and Cal. king platforms ship as two halves. Materials: Solid walnut or white ash frame; solid ash slats; walnut or white ash veneer headboard with or without natural woven cane panel; stainless steel headboard support with satin chrome finish; solid walnut or white ash legs or stainless steel H-frame legs with satin chrome finish. Director of design at Herman Miller from 1945 to 1972, George Nelson helped make the company what it is today. Spanish designer Jaime Hayon immersed himself as a teenager in both skateboard culture and graffiti art, which lie at the core of the bold and whimsical forms that he creates today. In 1997, after studying industrial design in Madrid and Paris, he joined Fabrica, a research center in Treviso, Italy, where he soon became the head of design. Hayon struck out on his own in 2003, first devising collections of ceramics and furniture, then delving into interior design. His work is featured in several museums and has received accolades from the likes of Time and Wallpaper . Réaction Poétique commemorates the 50-year anniversary of Le Corbusiers death, inspired by the organic shapes of his architecture and LEsprit Nouveau artwork. I wanted to create useful objects for the modern home such as trays and side tables, but with sculptural elements interplaying forms, light and shadow, says Hayon. These pieces can be used for everything from passing hors doeuvres to displaying knickknacks. Each is carved and finished by hand and includes a card of authenticity. Made in Italy. Design Within Reach Moller Model 80A Stool with Natural Woven Seat
Design Within Reach Moller Model 80A Stool with Natural Woven Seat 

In 1944, Niels Otto Møller began his cabinetry company, where old craft traditions, like the hand-woven seat on the Model 80A Stool (1963), are still used today. Danish cord seats are known for their durability easily withstanding decades of frequent use and the strength of this material made it a smart substitute for tires when rubber was in short supply during WWII. What's amazing about that history is that Danish cord is made of tightly twisted paper. Being a natural material, Danish cord is very pleasant to sit on and the way that it's woven provides lasting comfort. Thirty years after he founded his company, Niels Otto Møller began exporting his chairs to Japan, which remains one of its biggest markets due to the simplicity and quality of the design and craftsmanship. Møllers is still a small family-owned business and is now managaged by Niels' son, Jørgen Henrik Møller. This Stool is an authentic, fully licensed product of J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik. The seat is woven by hand from one continuous 498-foot-long piece of cord. To make the frames, the company selects the raw wood themselves from environmentally friendly areas. Machines are never used for the final polish, as these devices treat all wood the same and can’t replicate the finish that comes from polishing by hand. Materials Teak or walnut frame; woven paper seat in natural.

Danish designers Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen and Kasper Rønn named their studio Norm to express their dedication to working with Danish norms and standards refined over hundreds of years, says Bjerre-Poulsen, rather than rejecting them in the endless search for new. The duo conceived their Wire Planter (2015) after visiting a Japanese garden where plants were strategically positioned at different heights to create interesting arrangements. Design Within Reach Hoffmann Side Chair

Josef Hoffmann is well known for the simple, restrained, yet visually interesting dining chairs – several intended for cafés – that he designed early in the 20th century. The influence of the Arts and Crafts movement can be seen in his work, but Hoffmann also embraced the industrial age. Rather than rejecting traditional decoration, he succeeded in making it serve structural principles, which he believed should determine the forms of buildings, interiors and objects. Whether admiring one of his chairs or the Sanatorium Purkersdorf he designed in 1903, you can see Hoffmanns emphasis on straight, unadorned lines, characteristics that are in keeping with the style of the Viennese Secession. The Hoffmann Side Chair (1925), designed in collaboration with Josef Frank, is made at the bentwood factory founded by Michael Thonet in 1861. Made in the Czech Republic. Design Within Reach Chieftains Chair

With distinctive shapes inspired by primitive weaponry and a seat that appears suspended above the frame, the sculptural form of the Chieftains Chair (1949) changed the future of Danish design. Finn Juhl created the chair for the 1949 Cabinetmakers Guild in Copenhagen. During the exhibition, King Frederick IX sat in the chair, causing a journalist to suggest calling it the Kings Chair. But Juhl didnt like how pretentious that sounded and said, You had better call it a chieftains chair, which the journalist did. (At some point the apostrophe was dropped.) This is the authentic Chieftains Chair by Onecollection. Made in Denmark. Finn Juhl believed that the craftsmans ability to form is probably the same as that of a sculptor. Form follows function, and nowhere is that more apparent than in a sculpted chair that anticipates the curves of the human body. Arne Jacobsen designed the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, and for its busy lobby, he created the biomorphic Egg (1958). With this chair, Jacobsen embraced new materials that allowed him to shape fluid curves and single-piece molded shells. At a time when others were experimenting with bent tubular steel, Jacobsen focused on the upholstered armchair, believing a solution existed that was still true to modern ideals. Indeed, he met that goal. Set on a rotating base, the Egg Chair allows sitters to swivel toward a conversation area or away from others if privacy is desired. It also tilts back for relaxed lounging. Designer and sculptor Brian Alexander has always been fascinated by the way people interact with their environments and the objects around them. By studying peoples behavior, he gets a sense of what they find intuitive, which he then works into his creations. I try to slip people little affirmations through my designs, things they can identify or connect with on a very basic level, he explains. You can see it in their faces, the reactions they have when something flows with them rather than against them. A holder of 20-plus patents for office furniture and accessories, Alexander clearly knows his way around the workplace and what people need to be comfortable and productive in it. His Renew Desk (2013) lets you go from sitting to standing and back again so you can keep moving throughout the workday – vital to improving energy and focus and to lowering health risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle. The Hoffmann Armchair (1925), designed in collaboration with Josef Frank, is made at the bentwood factory founded by Michael Thonet in 1861. Made in the Czech Republic. Materials: Solid European beech wood from FSC-certified sources; caned seat; water-based stain and clear varnish; nylon floor glides. Measurements:H 31.5" W 19.5" D 21" Seat H 18" Arm H 27.5"

Finnish designer Mika Tolvanen, winner of the prestigious Bruno Mathsson Award of 2012, named his simple basket Restore because its constructed of polymer felt made from recycled PET bottles. This eco-friendly approach is something that can be found in many of the projects Tolvanen has worked on since earning his masters degree in design from the Royal College of Art in 2001. Perfect for holding magazines, toys or even firewood, the Restore Basket (2009) holds its shape but is made of a soft material that wont scratch tabletop surfaces. I wanted the basket to have a non-obtrusive nature, says Tolvanen. And to give it a form that has a friendly appearance. Made in China. Materials: Polymer felt made from recycled PET bottles. Architect George Nelson, who was Herman Millers design director from 1945 to 1972, once said, Every truly original idea seems to find its most important expression in a chair. And then he blew the doors off lighting design. While outfitting his office, Nelson discovered a silk-covered Swedish hanging lamp that he coveted but found too expensive. He then recalled seeing a photo in the paper of Liberty ships being mothballed by having the decks covered with netting and then being sprayed with a self-webbing plastic, which got him thinking. And then, Whammo! Inspiration struck, and by the next night, Nelson had designed his first Bubble Lamp® (1952) by spinning a skeleton of steel wires on a turntable and shooting it with translucent plastic until it was covered in a smooth, washable film. When you put a light in it, it glowed. This is the authentic Bubble Lamp, produced in partnership with the George Nelson Foundation. Bulb (not included): LED, CFL or incandescent; E26 base; 150W max. Design Within Reach MR Adjustable Chaise 

The chairs cantilevered design uses tubular steel, then a technological novelty, to create an intuitively accessible and ergonomic seat. (When asked why he created chairs with generously sized seats, Mies van der Rohe allegedly replied that he designs chairs hed be most comfortable sitting in.) The MR Chaise, still made to his specifications, is perfectly balanced, featuring the material innovation and lack of ornamentation that epitomize the International Style. It was awarded the Museum of Modern Art Award in 1977 and the Design Center Stuttgart Award in 1978. The frame of this piece is stamped with the KnollStudio logo and Mies van der Rohes signature. Design Within Reach BassamFellows Daybed
Design Within Reach BassamFellows Daybed 

This Daybed (2004) was designed to be seen in the round, says Craig Bassam, by which he means that it can be seen and used from all sides. Such an approach isnt surprising from a design team living in a glass house where furniture is visible from every angle, whether youre inside or out. The house is the work of Philip Johnson, the architect who designed the Glass House for his own private residence in New Canaan, Connecticut. To see how seamlessly this Daybed (and all the furniture BassamFellows has created) works in a space designed by the iconic Johnson makes it very clear that these are the next icons – destined to become highly collectible. Bassam is an architect whose career started with Bruce Eeles, a disciple of Marcel Breuer. His partner, Scott Fellows, is a Harvard MBA who transformed the Swiss firm Bally. Together they are BassamFellows, described as the design worlds A-team by The Times of London . This fully handcrafted Daybed is made of solid American black walnut that is sustainably and locally harvested. The leather cushions are hand-stitched with inverted seams; the backrest adjusts to three positions. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Solid American black walnut; oxidized brass adjustable back support; dense foam core cushions with down topping; Elmo Elmotique aniline leather upholstery. Design Within Reach Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, Tall
Design Within Reach Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, Tall 

Charles and Ray Eames had ideas about making a better world, one in which things were designed to bring greater pleasure to our lives. Their iconic Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman (1956) began with a desire to create a chair with the warm, receptive look of a well-used first basemans mitt. The result embodies what it really means to lounge. In continuous production since its introduction, this set is widely considered one of the most significant designs of the 20th century. Combining soft, inviting leather with the sleek form of molded wood, the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman is the culmination of the Eameses efforts to create a club chair using the molded plywood technology they pioneered in the 40s. Even today, each piece is assembled by hand to ensure the highest level of quality and craftsmanship, and youll be pleased to discover the set gets even better with use and age. This is the authentic Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. Herman Miller and the Eames Office, still run by the Eames family, developed the taller size in response to the fact that the average height of people worldwide has increased about an inch since the chair was designed. The variations in size are subtle to the eye, but for taller individuals, they make the difference between I love Eames and Eames loves me. Materials: Seven-ply walnut, santos palisander, white ash or ebonized ash veneer shells; molded plywood internal frames; die-cast aluminum back brace and swivel base on chair, stationary base on ottoman; stainless steel leveling floor glides; polyurethane foam cushions; Maharam Mohair Supreme fabric upholstery or Spinneybeck® Vicenza, Herman Miller® MCL or Edelman® All-Grain leather upholstery.
