With his iconic seating collection, Harry Bertoia transformed industrial wire rods into a new furniture form. The events that made this work possible began a decade earlier at Cranbrook Academy of Art, when Bertoia met Florence Knoll (then Florence Schust). Years later, the Italian-born designer was invited to work for Florence and her husband, Hans Knoll. Bertoia was given the freedom to work on whatever suited him, without being held to a strict design agenda, and the result of this arrangement was the Bertoia Seating Collection (1952). Featuring a delicate filigreed appearance thats supremely strong, these airy seats are sculpted out of steel rods. In his art, Bertoia experimented with open forms and metal work, and these chairs were an extension of that work. If you look at the chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture, said Bertoia. Space passes through them. After designing his seating collection, Bertoia returned to focusing mostly on sculpture. This is the authentic Bertoia Chair produced by Knoll. DWR Exclusive Owner of more than 400 patents, self-taught inventor Poul Cadovius constantly sought smarter solutions for everything from furniture to bus shelters to sailboats. In the mid-1940s, he devised an ingenious wall-mounted shelving system to save floor space: the Royal System (1948). After the systems introduction, Cadovius three-employee firm soon became the largest furniture manufacturer in Denmark, exporting to countries worldwide. In 2010, Cadovius gave the rights to produce the design to Danish company dk3. A year later, he died at the age of 99, but the project continued under the watchful eye of his widow, Evy, who made sure it stayed true to her husbands high standards. The most successful furniture collection in Denmark for three decades, the Royal System is back in production and available only at DWR. Use it in entryways, living rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms – wherever you want to lift space-stealing furniture off the floor and have more room for living. Saving a factory and helping the employees keep their jobs was not something Peter Bowles thought hed be doing when he designed his first bone china light. The story begins in Stoke-on-Trent, the heart of the British ceramics industry, where its prized porcelain has been produced for more than three centuries. Bowles convinced a tableware factory to produce his first design, but as the orders started to come in, he learned the factory would be closing. Rather than moving production overseas, Bowles bought the factory and offered the entire staff new jobs with his company, Original BTC. The Drop 1 Pendant (2000) is beautifully crafted of hand-cast bone china. Creating these lights involves a highly skilled, labor-intensive process that begins with raw clay and ends with biscuit firing, glazing, glossing and firing again. When lit, the shade has a translucent glow that allows for warm diffused light. Attention to detail is at the heart of every Drop 1 Pendant, right down to the braided cord, which was designed by Peter and can be found on every light his company makes. In 1944, Niels Otto Møller began his cabinetry company, where old craft traditions, like the hand-woven seat on the Model 80A Stool (1963), are still used today. Danish cord seats are known for their durability easily withstanding decades of frequent use and the strength of this material made it a smart substitute for tires when rubber was in short supply during WWII. What's amazing about that history is that Danish cord is made of tightly twisted paper. Being a natural material, Danish cord is very pleasant to sit on and the way that it's woven provides lasting comfort. Thirty years after he founded his company, Niels Otto Møller began exporting his chairs to Japan, which remains one of its biggest markets due to the simplicity and quality of the design and craftsmanship. Møllers is still a small family-owned business and is now managaged by Niels' son, Jørgen Henrik Møller. This Stool is an authentic, fully licensed product of J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik. The seat is woven by hand from one continuous 498-foot-long piece of cord. To make the frames, the company selects the raw wood themselves from environmentally friendly areas. Machines are never used for the final polish, as these devices treat all wood the same and can’t replicate the finish that comes from polishing by hand. After refining their molded plastic chairs, Charles and Ray Eames began experimenting with making a chair from welded wire. To succeed, the Eameses had to figure out how to create a design with the strength they needed while keeping manufacturing costs as low as possible. Design Within Reach Pelican Chair Design Within Reach Pelican Chair

It is shocking to think of Finn Juhl designing this sculptural chair in 1940 – that was more than 75 years ago, and the Pelican Chair is still out there by todays standards. With graceful curves that befriend the body and wrap the sitter in its embrace, the Pelican is true to Juhls idea that a chair is not just a product of decorative art in a space, it is a form and a space in itself. And while the influence of contemporary sculpture is clear, Juhl was quick to clarify that furniture is furniture, not sculpture. The upholstery is hand-sewn onto the frame; some colors (see below) are finished with tufted buttons. This original is an authentic, fully licensed product of House of Finn JuhlTM. Made in Denmark. Colors with tufted buttons: grey with red cushion and red buttons; teal with light blue cushion and light blue buttons; cream with leather sand cushion and leather sand buttons. Materials: Steel frame molded in hard cellular plastic and MDI; walnut legs; canvas-linen bottom cover; 100% recyclable Pantera foam and cotton fiber padding; hand-sewn double-stitched upholstery. Teal/Blue: Kvadrat Divina 3 (100% wool) with tufted buttons. Charcoal Grey, Plum and Tan/Brown: Kvadrat Divina Melange (100% wool). Cream: Kvadrat Hallingdal (70% wool, 30% viscose). Design Within Reach Eames Molded Fiberglass Dowel-Leg Armchair (DFAW) Design Within Reach Eames Molded Fiberglass Dowel-Leg Armchair (DFAW)

Charles and Ray Eames believed design is a method of action, and they continually updated their work as new materials became available. The chair that Charles and Ray were designing, explains grandson Eames Demetrios, is the chair thats made tomorrow . The duo originally designed their molded chair in metal and entered it as a prototype in MoMAs 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design, then refashioned it in light yet strong fiberglass just two years later. In the 1980s, after determining fiberglass production was detrimental to the environment, Herman Miller ceased production to explore more sustainable options, eventually choosing recyclable polypropylene. The company never quite forgot about fiberglass, however, and it recently began researching greener production methods. The Eames Molded Fiberglass Chair (1950) is the end result, constructed using a cleaner process but true to the original with its beloved variegated surface. This reintroduced version comes in a range of reformulated semi-gloss color pigments that faithfully reproduce the vintage ones. Its deep seat pocket and waterfall edge keep you comfortable by reducing pressure on the backs of your thighs. The seat back is left unfinished to maintain a slightly rough natural texture for easier gripping with your hands. This is an authentic Eames product by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. DFAW stands for dining-height fiberglass armchair with wood base. Made of 99% recyclable materials and covered by Herman Millers take-back program for environmentally sound recycling (should you ever wish to part with this chair). Materials: Fiberglass-reinforced plastic seat; maple, walnut, ebony-stained ash or white ash dowels; black or white powder-coated wire. The process for making shells and the nature of fiberglass mean that each shell is unique and can possess traits such as tiny cavities in the surface, small points of lighter or darker color, or faint circular shadows where base attaches to shell. Perfect for holding magazines, toys or even firewood, the Restore Basket (2009) holds its shape but is made of a soft material that wont scratch tabletop surfaces. Design Within Reach Matera Bed with Storage Design Within Reach Matera Bed with Storage

DWR Exclusive The Matera Collection (2007), focused on delivering ample storage, is the work of Sean Yoo, who at the time of its conception lived in Matera, Italy (thus its name). Born in Seoul, Yoo grew up in Los Angeles and was working as a city planner when a visit to the Noguchi Museum in New York inspired him to pursue design. I was particularly attracted to the way Noguchi applied sculptural qualities to common household objects, says Yoo. It seemed to give meaning and purpose to otherwise meaningless objects. The Matera Collection features clean lines nicely finished with beveled edges, running match wood grain and exposed-slot mortise-and-tenon corner joints. All pieces have slotted bases that lend an airy feel. The Matera Bed with Storage has full-extension side drawers that rest off the floor (six drawers for all sizes except the twin, which has three drawers on one side). Made in Malaysia.
