DWR Exclusive Son of a draftsman and a homemaker, Bernard-Albin Gras was born in Saint-Raphaël, France, in 1886. A product of Gras' passion to improve working conditions for hundreds of laborers in ordinary machine shops, research laboratories and design studios in the 1920s, this lighting solution is capable of meeting the needs of many different users. The architect Le Corbusier seized upon the design, which satisfied the demands of his ideology about the perfect object-tool: a form reduced to its pure function, free of superfluous ornament. Corbu furnished his design offices and architectural projects with Lampes Gras, and other early adopters included Eileen Gray, Man Ray and Robert Mallet-Stevens. The cast steel frames are made without screws or welded joints; all parts contribute to utmost effectiveness of the whole. Bulb (not included): LED, CFL or incandescent; E12 base; 40W max. Hugely dramatic, light as a feather and distinctly Dutch, the Random Light (2002) by Bertjan Pot began as a modernist craft project of sorts. After making attempts at knitting fiberglass as a means of creating structure, Pot turned to coiling epoxy-dipped fiberglass around a large balloon in varying patterns. Once the balloon was popped, the dramatic globe shape remained, becoming a buoyant pendant lamp for an entryway, dining room or lounge area. The light bulb is visible at the center of the globe, creating an all-over glow with minimal glare when lit. Bulb (not included): incandescent 60W/120V/A19/E26. UL Listed for commercial use. Design Within Reach AntTM Chair with 4 Legs in Colored Ash Design Within Reach AntTM Chair with 4 Legs in Colored Ash More Info Product cell

Originally designed for the canteen at Novo Nordisk, an international Danish healthcare company, the Ant Chair (1952) faced an unclear future when the manufacturer expressed concern about its potential. But Arne Jacobsen believed in his product and offered to buy all the chairs if they didn't sell. Of course, he never had to make good on that offer, as the Ant Chair quickly became an international success. Jacobsen shaped the core of Danish design identity when he accommodated three different bends in one piece of plywood, simply by narrowing the chair back. This chair is ideally suited to the human body. Its seatback has a comfortable give, and its waterfall seat edge doesn't press into legs. Stackable up to six high. Design Within Reach Noguchi Table Design Within Reach Noguchi Table More Info Product cell

Following his apprenticeship with the legendary Constantin Brancusi, sculptor Isamu Noguchi began to experiment in environmental design, theatrical sets – he was the only designer choreographer Martha Graham would work with – and, eventually, product design. He created his first furniture prototypes for Herman Miller in 1942 and went on to work with companies such as Steuben and Zenith. The Noguchi Table (1948) conceals nothing, revealing everything about the nature of simplicity. Two smoothly shaped pieces of solid wood interlock to form a tripod that supports a thick glass tabletop. The base is available in black, walnut, natural cherry and white ash, the latter of which is finished with a process that arrests the wood in its freshly cut state, resulting in a creamy white color that will not turn yellow over time. This is the authentic Noguchi Table by Herman Miller. The Noguchi Table must ship with our White Glove delivery service. Made in U.S.A. The configuration of this table is a registered trademark. To distinguish the real Noguchi table from the cheap knockoffs, Herman Miller has etched Noguchi's signature on the longest edge of the glass top and on a medallion on the underside of the base. Charles and Ray Eames believed "design is a method of action," and they continually updated their work as new materials became available. "The chair that Charles and Ray were designing," explains grandson Eames Demetrios, "is the chair that's made tomorrow ." The duo originally designed their molded chair in metal and entered it as a prototype in MoMA's 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design, then refashioned it in light yet strong fiberglass just two years later. In the 1980s, after determining fiberglass production was detrimental to the environment, Herman Miller ceased production to explore more sustainable options, eventually choosing recyclable polypropylene. The company never quite forgot about fiberglass, however, and it recently began researching greener production methods. The Eames Molded Fiberglass Chair (1950) is the end result, constructed using a cleaner process but true to the original with its beloved variegated surface. This reintroduced version comes in a range of reformulated semi-gloss color pigments that faithfully reproduce the vintage ones. Its deep seat pocket and waterfall edge keep you comfortable by reducing pressure on the backs of your thighs. The seat back is left unfinished to maintain a slightly rough natural texture for easier gripping with your hands. This is an authentic Eames product by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. After studying at the famous Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and working for architect Vilhelm Lauritzen, Finn Juhl set up his own design office in 1945. Later that year, Juhl and master cabinetmaker Niels Voder, collaborators since 1937, created a buzz at the Cabinetmakers' Guild exhibition with their expressive, sculptural pieces. In 1951, Juhl went on to make his stateside debut at the Good Design exhibit in Chicago and at MoMA in New York, and he represented Denmark in designing a meeting chamber at United Nations Headquarters. The trained architect and self-taught furniture designer drew the inspiration for his Finn Juhl Credenza (1955) from the cubist movement and Goethe's color wheel, reflected in the piece's simple geometric shapes and interlocking planes and its sliding doors and six trays finished in varying shades of blue lacquer. Born in Seoul, Yoo grew up in Los Angeles and was working as a city planner when a visit to the Noguchi Museum in New York inspired him to pursue design. "I was particularly attracted to the way Noguchi applied sculptural qualities to common household objects," says Yoo. "It seemed to give meaning and purpose to otherwise meaningless objects." The Matera Collection features clean lines nicely finished with beveled edges, running match wood grain and exposed-slot mortise-and-tenon corner joints. All pieces have slotted bases that lend an airy feel. The Matera Bed with Storage has full-extension side drawers that rest off the floor (six drawers for all sizes except the twin, which has three drawers on one side). Made in Malaysia. Design Within Reach Vipp Trash Bin Design Within Reach Vipp Trash Bin More Info Product cell

In Danish, the function of opening and closing is called vipp, which is also the name of a design company that’s been producing iconic pedal bins since 1939. The story begins with Holger Nielsen, who made a bin for his wife’s hair salon. Everyone who used the eminently useful bin praised its aesthetics and functionality, and Nielsen was inundated with requests. Now at the helm of this family-run business is Nielsen’s daughter, Jette Egelund, but little else has changed. “Good design never goes out of fashion,” said Nielsen, whose original Vipp Trash Bin is now in the permanent collection at MoMA. The Vipp logo is engraved on each Bin, verifying its authenticity. Made in Latvia. Each bin is hand-assembled, ensuring quality that lasts. A removable inner bin makes changing out the bags easy, and a roll of biodegradable liners is included. Materials: BINS, stainless steel; rubber. LINERS, biodegradable polyethylene. Design Within Reach NelsonTM Cigar Wall Sconce Design Within Reach NelsonTM Cigar Wall Sconce More Info Product cell

Architect George Nelson, who was Herman Miller's design director from 1945 to 1972, once said, "Every truly original idea seems to find its most important expression in a chair." And then he blew the doors off lighting design. While outfitting his office, Nelson discovered a silk-covered Swedish hanging lamp that he coveted but found too expensive. He then recalled seeing a photo in the paper of Liberty ships being mothballed "by having the decks covered with netting and then being sprayed with a self-webbing plastic," which got him thinking. "And then, Whammo!" Inspiration struck, and by the next night, Nelson had designed his first Bubble Lamp® (1952) by spinning a skeleton of steel wires on a turntable and shooting it with translucent plastic until it was covered in a smooth, washable film. "When you put a light in it, it glowed." This is the authentic Bubble Lamp, produced in partnership with the George Nelson Foundation. Bulb (not included): LED, CFL or incandescent; E26 base; 150W max. UL Listed. Made in U.S.A. Design Within Reach Chieftains Chair Design Within Reach Chieftains Chair More Info Product cell

With distinctive shapes inspired by primitive weaponry and a seat that appears suspended above the frame, the sculptural form of the Chieftains Chair (1949) changed the future of Danish design. Finn Juhl created the chair for the 1949 Cabinetmakers' Guild in Copenhagen. During the exhibition, King Frederick IX sat in the chair, causing a journalist to suggest calling it the "King's Chair." But Juhl didn't like how pretentious that sounded and said, "You had better call it a chieftain's chair," which the journalist did. (At some point the apostrophe was dropped.) This original is an authentic, fully licensed product of House of Finn JuhlTM. Made in Denmark. Finn Juhl believed that "the craftsman's ability to form is probably the same as that of a sculptor." The Chieftains Chair received the Danish Design Award in the Classics category for 2012. Materials: Teak and walnut frame; leather upholstery. Measurements:H 37.5" W 39" D 34.5" Seat H 13.5"

Design Within Reach Fortuny Lamp Design Within Reach Fortuny Lamp More Info Product cell

"It is not the quantity, but the quality of light, that makes things visible," said Spanish designer Mariano Fortuny. Trained as a painter, he was also an accomplished and innovative couturier, architect, inventor, set designer and lighting technician. The Delphos gown he designed in 1907 continues to shape women's fashion today, and the textiles company he founded in 1921 is still going strong. His patented cyclorama dome made it possible to change stage lighting instantly from bright sky to faint dusk, and his reflector lamp works on the same principle. A product of his lighting expertise, the height-adjustable Fortuny Lamp (1907) lets you direct light as desired with its sizable rotating shade. This imposing piece works to striking effect in large spaces such as restaurants, reception rooms and open-plan living areas. Dimmer switch on cord affords easy on-off access. Design Within Reach Moller Model 80A Stool with Natural Woven Seat Design Within Reach Moller Model 80A Stool with Natural Woven Seat More Info Product cell

In 1944, Niels Otto Møller began his cabinetry company, where old craft traditions, like the hand-woven seat on the Model 80A Stool (1963), are still used today. Danish cord seats are known for their durability easily withstanding decades of frequent use and the strength of this material made it a smart substitute for tires when rubber was in short supply during WWII. What's amazing about that history is that Danish cord is made of tightly twisted paper. Being a natural material, Danish cord is very pleasant to sit on and the way that it's woven provides lasting comfort. Thirty years after he founded his company, Niels Otto Møller began exporting his chairs to Japan, which remains one of its biggest markets due to the simplicity and quality of the design and craftsmanship. Møllers is still a small family-owned business and is now managaged by Niels' son, Jørgen Henrik Møller. This Stool is an authentic, fully licensed product of J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik. The seat is woven by hand from one continuous 498-foot-long piece of cord. To make the frames, the company selects the raw wood themselves from environmentally friendly areas. Machines are never used for the final polish, as these devices treat all wood the same and can’t replicate the finish that comes from polishing by hand. Materials Teak or walnut frame; woven paper seat in natural.

Design Within Reach Dennie Chair Design Within Reach Dennie Chair More Info Product cell

Born in Copenhagen in 1923, Nanna Ditzel was a groundbreaking modernist – her work spanned all areas of design. Trained as a cabinetmaker, she opened a studio with her husband Jørgen in 1946, designing furniture, ceramics, jewelry and textiles. Ditzel's Hallingdal fabric, designed in 1965, has been in continuous production since, becoming one of Kvadrat's best-selling products. Her Dennie Chair (1956), originally designed for Fritz Hansen, was a fixture in the Ditzel household but was never produced on a large scale. Nanna and Jørgen's daughter, Dennie (the chair's namesake), approached House of Finn Juhl about bringing this comfortable and cozy – yet minimal – design back into production. Compactly scaled with an elegant splay-leg base in chromed steel, it suits a living room, den or kid's room – Dennie remembers being read books as a child from this "body holding" lounge chair. This nearly lost midcentury classic chair is upholstered, of course, in Ditzel's Hallingdal fabric. This original is an authentic, fully licensed product of House of Finn JuhlTM. Made in Denmark. Materials: Plywood shell with Pantera foam; polyester foam top layer; chromed steel; Kvadrat Hallingdal fabric (70% wool, 30% viscose). Measurements:H 35.5" W 32.25" D 31.5" Seat H 14.5"
