Design Within Reach Hoffmann Side Chair
Design Within Reach Hoffmann Side Chair

Josef Hoffmann is well known for the simple, restrained, yet visually interesting dining chairs – several intended for cafés – that he designed early in the 20th century. The influence of the Arts and Crafts movement can be seen in his work, but Hoffmann also embraced the industrial age. Rather than rejecting traditional decoration, he succeeded in making it serve structural principles, which he believed should determine the forms of buildings, interiors and objects. Whether admiring one of his chairs or the Sanatorium Purkersdorf he designed in 1903, you can see Hoffmanns emphasis on straight, unadorned lines, characteristics that are in keeping with the style of the Viennese Secession. The Hoffmann Side Chair (1925), designed in collaboration with Josef Frank, is made at the bentwood factory founded by Michael Thonet in 1861. Made in the Czech Republic. Materials: Solid European beech wood from FSC-certified sources; caned seat; water-based stain and clear varnish; nylon floor glides. Measurements:H 31.5" W 17.75" D 21" Seat H 18"

Design Within Reach Noguchi Table
Design Within Reach Noguchi Table

Following his apprenticeship with the legendary Constantin Brancusi, sculptor Isamu Noguchi began to experiment in environmental design, theatrical sets – he was the only designer choreographer Martha Graham would work with – and, eventually, product design. He created his first furniture prototypes for Herman Miller in 1942 and went on to work with companies such as Steuben and Zenith. The Noguchi Table (1948) conceals nothing, revealing everything about the nature of simplicity. Two smoothly shaped pieces of solid wood interlock to form a tripod that supports a thick glass tabletop. The base is available in black, walnut, natural cherry and white ash, the latter of which is finished with a process that arrests the wood in its freshly cut state, resulting in a creamy white color that will not turn yellow over time. This is the authentic Noguchi Table by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. The configuration of this table is a registered trademark. To distinguish the real Noguchi table from the cheap knockoffs, Herman Miller has etched Noguchis signature on the longest edge of the glass top and on a medallion on the underside of the base. Materials: Solid wood base in Noguchi black, walnut, natural cherry or white ash; 0.75" thick glass. Measurements:H 15.75" W 50" D 36"

Design Within Reach Era Chair with Cane Seat
Design Within Reach Era Chair with Cane Seat

Defined by its dependable bentwood construction and simple, organic form, the graceful, lightweight and surprisingly strong Era Chair with Cane Seat (1859) has been in continuous production for more than 150 years. By making the back of the chair and rear legs from a single piece of curved wood, designer Michael Thonet, who perfected the bentwood process for chair-making, eliminated the need for expensive and time-consuming hand-carved joints. The Era Chair with Cane is suitable for residential and commercial use and remains a staple in cafes and restaurants around the globe. As with any natural material, slight variations in the texture and color of the wood are to be expected and are not defects. Made in the Czech Republic. Materials: Solid European beech wood from FSC-certified sources; caned seat; water-borne stain and varnish or lacquer finish; nylon floor glides. Measurements:H 33.25" W 16.25" D 20.5" Seat H 18.5"

Design Within Reach AntTM Chair with 4 Legs in Colored Ash
Design Within Reach AntTM Chair with 4 Legs in Colored Ash

Originally designed for the canteen at Novo Nordisk, an international Danish healthcare company, the Ant Chair (1952) faced an unclear future when the manufacturer expressed concern about its potential. But Arne Jacobsen believed in his product and offered to buy all the chairs if they didn’t sell. Of course, he never had to make good on that offer, as the Ant Chair quickly became an international success. Jacobsen shaped the core of Danish design identity when he accommodated three different bends in one piece of plywood, simply by narrowing the chair back. This chair is ideally suited to the human body. Its seatback has a comfortable give, and its waterfall seat edge doesn’t press into legs. Stackable up to six high. This is the authentic Ant Chair by Republic of Fritz Hansen. Made in Denmark. Colored Ash is a durable stain that keeps the wood grain visible, making each chair unique. Grey Oak is a special edition with painted oak veneer shell and steel frame with bronze finish. Materials: Pressure-molded sliced veneer shell with outer layer in lazur-painted ash or oak veneer; tubular steel frame with polished chrome or matte bronze finish. DWR Exclusive Born in Mainz, Germany, in 1924, Bernard Schottlander fled to England as a Jewish refugee in 1939. He worked as a welder for a short stint during the war before delving into sculpture at Leeds College of Art and the Anglo-French art center in St. Johns Wood. A year later, he went on to open his own design studio and began creating new pieces in limited editions. An admirer of Alexander Calder, the American sculptor perhaps best known as originator of the mobile, Schottlander created his Mantis Collection (1951) as an homage. Movement being intrinsic to his work, he devised clever adjustable frames constructed of strong yet flexible steel rods combined with counterweights (except for the sconce, which has a fixed design). He then fabricated shades from aluminum using repoussé and chasing techniques, relying on his trained sculptors eye to produce beautifully flowing shapes that set the symmetrical and asymmetrical in opposition. Design Within Reach Heller Dinnerware Set
Design Within Reach Heller Dinnerware Set

I like to design to be semantically correct, syntactically consistent and pragmatically understandable, said Massimo Vignelli, and all three can be said of his Heller Dinnerware (1964). Originally manufactured in Italy, this stackable dinnerware won the prestigious Compasso d'Oro Award for Good Design in 1964. In 1971, manufacturing moved to the United States, and Heller Dinnerware became the first product made by a company called Heller, now an international furniture manufacturer responsible for introducing the Bellini Chair®, Frank Gehry outdoor furniture and other icons of modern design. Heller Dinnerware was an instant classic, and because its still made using the same molds, a set bought today will blend seamlessly with vintage pieces. The genius of the design is in the way it stacks. Utilizing industrial production and materials, the plates and bowls are made with straight sides and a small lip on the bottom. Each one fits securely into the next, creating a straight, tall stack that maximizes storage space. In 2003, Massimo and Lella Vignelli received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. All pieces are dishwasher safe; mug is microwave safe. Set includes dinner plate, salad plate, soup bowl and mug. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Melamine plates and bowls; polycarbonate mugs. Design Within Reach Eames Molded Plastic Dowel-Leg Side Chair (DSW)

Charles and Ray Eames believed that design is a method of action, and they continually updated their work as new materials became available. Their Molded Plastic chairs were originally designed in metal and entered as a prototype in MoMAs 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design. They then changed the material to fiberglass in 1950, and today the chairs are made of recyclable polypropylene. Charles was dissatisfied with the fiberglass, and it wasnt until after his death that the matte finish he desired was achieved, thanks to advances in materials. The chair that Charles and Ray were designing, explains grandson Eames Demetrios, is the chair thats made tomorrow . Form follows function, and nowhere is that more apparent than in a sculpted chair that anticipates the curves of the human body. Arne Jacobsen designed the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, and for its busy lobby, he created the biomorphic Egg (1958). With this chair, Jacobsen embraced new materials that allowed him to shape fluid curves and single-piece molded shells. At a time when others were experimenting with bent tubular steel, Jacobsen focused on the upholstered armchair, believing a solution existed that was still true to modern ideals. Indeed, he met that goal. Set on a rotating base, the Egg Chair allows sitters to swivel toward a conversation area or away from others if privacy is desired. It also tilts back for relaxed lounging. This is the authentic Egg Chair manufactured by Republic of Fritz Hansen. Made in Poland. The Egg Chair tilts and swivels. Finely upholstered, the fabric or leather is hand-sewn onto the frame. Charles and Ray Eames believed design is a method of action, and they continually updated their work as new materials became available. The chair that Charles and Ray were designing, explains grandson Eames Demetrios, is the chair thats made tomorrow . The duo originally designed their molded chair in metal and entered it as a prototype in MoMAs 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design, then refashioned it in light yet strong fiberglass just two years later. In the 1980s, after determining fiberglass production was detrimental to the environment, Herman Miller ceased production to explore more sustainable options, eventually choosing recyclable polypropylene. The company never quite forgot about fiberglass, however, and it recently began researching greener production methods. The Eames Molded Fiberglass Chair (1950) is the end result, constructed using a cleaner process but true to the original with its beloved variegated surface. This reintroduced version comes in a range of reformulated semi-gloss color pigments that faithfully reproduce the vintage ones. Its deep seat pocket and waterfall edge keep you comfortable by reducing pressure on the backs of your thighs. The seat back is left unfinished to maintain a slightly rough natural texture for easier gripping with your hands. This is an authentic Eames product by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. DFAW stands for dining-height fiberglass armchair with wood base. Made of 99% recyclable materials and covered by Herman Millers take-back program for environmentally sound recycling (should you ever wish to part with this chair). Materials: Fiberglass-reinforced plastic seat; maple, walnut, ebony-stained ash or white ash dowels; black or white powder-coated wire. Drawn to the translucency and versatility of bone china, Peter Bowles saw an opportunity to create something other than tableware with this time-honored material. The result is his Hector Collection (1992), which is beautifully crafted of hand-cast bone china. Creating these lights involves a highly skilled, labor-intensive process that begins with raw clay and ends with biscuit firing, glazing, glossing and firing again. When lit, these china shades have a translucent glow that allows for warm diffused light, and the pivoting shades allow you to direct the light as you wish. Attention to detail is at the heart of every Original BTC collection, right down to the braided cord, which was designed by Peter and can be found on every light his company makes. Architect George Nelson, who was Herman Millers design director from 1945 to 1972, once said, Every truly original idea seems to find its most important expression in a chair. And then he blew the doors off lighting design. While outfitting his office, Nelson discovered a silk-covered Swedish hanging lamp that he coveted but found too expensive. He then recalled seeing a photo in the paper of Liberty ships being mothballed by having the decks covered with netting and then being sprayed with a self-webbing plastic, which got him thinking. And then, Whammo! Inspiration struck, and by the next night, Nelson had designed his first Bubble Lamp® (1952) by spinning a skeleton of steel wires on a turntable and shooting it with translucent plastic until it was covered in a smooth, washable film. When you put a light in it, it glowed. This is the authentic Bubble Lamp, produced in partnership with the George Nelson Foundation. Bulb (not included): LED, CFL or incandescent; E26 base; 150W max. Design Within Reach LC10 Outdoor Table, Square

Expressing the rationalist aesthetic that came to epitomize the International Style, the LC10 Table (1928) by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand features framework reduced to a minimum. Perriand had the idea to manufacture the legs and side pieces separately to ensure the highest quality finish; in this fashion, components of various sizes can be used to create tables more in line with demand today. The LC Series was originally designed for indoor use, but after a visit to Villa Savoye, where some of the pieces were being used on the terrace, Cassina was inspired to create outdoor-safe models. The manufacturer spent three years working closely with the Le Corbusier Foundation to develop a product that was within the Foundations strict parameters: to be the same or better quality than indoor. Cassina opted for better quality, constructing the frame using hand-polished type 304 stainless steel and opting for silver welding rather than chrome. This silver welding offers extreme resistance to corrosion, developing a patina over time, and is also more authentic – chrome was not commonly used until the 1970s. Each piece is signed, numbered and, as a product of Cassinas Masters Collection, manufactured by Cassina under exclusive worldwide license from the Le Corbusier Foundation. Made in Italy. Materials: Hand-polished type 304 stainless steel frame with silver welding; matte black stretchers; 15mm textured glass tabletop; plastic foot ends. Measurements:H 13" W 27.5" D 27.5"

After being schooled in industrial design and engineering at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College in London, Michael Anastassiades founded his own studio in 1994. His work falls somewhere in between the industrial and sculptural, especially his lighting, which consists of reflective materials such as polished bronze and mirrored glass in simple geometric shapes. Anastassiades pieces can be found in hotels, restaurants and shops worldwide, including the SoHo House New York, the Grand Hôtel Stockholm and Sergio Rossi boutiques. The IC Lamp (2013) possesses the poetic grace and balance that characterize all of his pieces, consisting of a blown glass diffuser mounted on an ultra-thin yet stable frame. Positioned in a seemingly precarious manner, as if its ready to drop any moment, the perched sphere lends captivating tension to the design. Bulb (included): 60W/G9 frosted halogen. Made in Italy. Materials: Brass frame with clear finish or steel frame with chrome finish; frosted blown glass diffuser. Measurements:H 19" W 8" D 8", 4.85 lbs.

Movement being intrinsic to his work, he devised clever adjustable frames constructed of strong yet flexible steel rods combined with counterweights. He then fabricated shades from aluminum using repoussé and chasing techniques, relying on his trained sculptors eye to produce beautifully flowing shapes that set the symmetrical and asymmetrical in opposition. His lamps – much like his idols mobiles – appear to defy gravity with their floating forms. Bulb (not included): LED, CFL or incandescent; E12 base; 40W max. This is the authentic Mantis Collection. Made in China. Materials: Painted steel arm and base; painted aluminum shade; nickeled brass ball joint. Measurements:H 62"–66.5" D 27"–42.5" Shade Diameter 10.75"

DWR Exclusive Son of a draftsman and a homemaker, Bernard-Albin Gras was born in Saint-Raphaël, France, in 1886. He would become an engineer and tireless inventor who registered dozens of patents, including one for Lampe Gras (1921). A product of Gras passion to improve working conditions for hundreds of laborers in ordinary machine shops, research laboratories and design studios in the 1920s, this mobile lighting solution is capable of meeting the needs of many different users. The architect Le Corbusier seized upon the design, which satisfied the demands of his ideology about the perfect object-tool: a form reduced to its pure function, free of superfluous ornament. Corbu furnished his design offices and architectural projects with Lampes Gras, and other early adopters included Eileen Gray, Man Ray and Robert Mallet-Stevens. The cast steel frames are made without screws or welded joints; all parts contribute to utmost effectiveness of the whole. Bulb (not included): LED, CFL or incandescent; E12 base; 40W max. Made in China. Materials: Cast steel body; chrome finish or matte black or white powder-coated finish; Bakelite sphere motion component. Measurements:H 47.25"–69.75" Shade Diameter 8.25" Cord L 120"

Design Within Reach Bertoia Side Chair
Design Within Reach Bertoia Side Chair

With his iconic seating collection, Harry Bertoia transformed industrial wire rods into a new furniture form. The events that made this work possible began a decade earlier at Cranbrook Academy of Art, when Bertoia met Florence Knoll (then Florence Schust). Years later, the Italian-born designer was invited to work for Florence and her husband, Hans Knoll. Bertoia was given the freedom to work on whatever suited him, without being held to a strict design agenda, and the result of this arrangement was the Bertoia Seating Collection (1952). Featuring a delicate filigreed appearance thats supremely strong, these airy seats are sculpted out of steel rods. In his art, Bertoia experimented with open forms and metal work, and these chairs were an extension of that work. If you look at the chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture, said Bertoia. Space passes through them. After designing his seating collection, Bertoia returned to focusing mostly on sculpture. This is the authentic Bertoia Chair produced by Knoll. The Knoll logo is stamped into its base. Made in Italy. The White and Black frames can be used outdoors with limited exposure to the elements. The Chrome frame is not for outdoor use. Materials: Welded steel rods; polished chrome finish with chrome connections or bonded Rilsan® finish with stainless steel connections. Measurements:H 28.75" W 21.75" D 19.75" Seat H 17.75"

For his simple and innovative lighting, Jason Miller draws on everyday aspects of American culture, transforming them into something surprising and beautiful. For his Modo Chandelier (2009), Miller was inspired by off-the-shelf industrial parts like those found on Canal Street, not far from his Brooklyn studio. We have re-engineered inexpensive parts that are made by the thousands in China or India, says Miller about the pieces manufacturing. Modos parts are made by high-end machine shops here in America that typically work for the airline industry. While the inspiration is a bit banal, it is now a very sophisticated product. The chandeliers components are painstakingly engineered and custom CNC-milled from solid aluminum. This version has a three-sided frame that holds 10 glass globes, and it includes a three-foot stem that can be cut upon installation to the desired length. Bulb (included): incandescent half-silver globe 25W/G25/E26. UL and CUL Listed. Made in U.S.A. The Modo Collection features hand-blown glass globes with slight variances in shape and color, which make each piece unique. The expressive sculptural forms of Eero Saarinen’s furniture can also be found in his architecture, from the TWA Terminal at Kennedy Airport to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis to Dulles International Airport. In 1940, the Finnish American and his friend Charles Eames took first prize at the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at MoMA. Later that decade, when Florence Knoll challenged Saarinen to create a chair that she could curl up in, she had found the right candidate for the task. The Womb Chair (1946) has an enveloping form that continues to be one of the most iconic and recognized representations of midcentury organic modernism. By applying foam molded over a fiberglass shell, Saarinen created a single-piece form that perfectly facilitates a relaxed sitting posture.
