Design Within Reach Series 7TM Chair Design Within Reach Series 7TM Chair More Info Product cell

The Series 7 Chair (1955) debuted in Sweden at the Helsingborg exhibition of 1955, or H55. One of the most copied chairs of the modern era, it features an ideal shape for the human form, with a back that offers just the right amount of give to keep your upper body comfortable and a waterfall seat that supports your legs without pressing into them. Arne Jacobsen, instilled with a love of materials, shaped the core of Danish design identity with this chair by forming it from one piece of plywood that he cleverly narrowed in the middle to accommodate three different bends. Once painstakingly made by hand, Series 7 is now crafted using automation methods borrowed from the German car industry and monitored by a team that ensures every single chair is perfect. Suitable for commercial use. Stacks six high. This is the authentic Series 7 Chair by Republic of Fritz Hansen. Made in Denmark. Colored ash is a durable stain that keeps the wood grain visible, making each chair unique. Lacquered veneer is a glossy finish with no visible wood grain, making chairs uniform. Natural veneer also keeps the wood grain visible, making each chair unique. Choice is a special edition that features legs electroplated with 22-karat rose gold. Materials: Pressure-molded sliced veneer shell with outer layer in lazur-painted ash veneer, lacquered ash veneer or natural wood veneer; tubular steel frame with chrome- or gold-plated finish. Design Within Reach Eames Lounge Chair Design Within Reach Eames Lounge Chair More Info Product cell

Charles and Ray Eames had ideas about making a better world, one in which things were designed to bring greater pleasure to our lives. Their iconic Eames Lounge Chair (1956) began with a desire to create a chair with "the warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman's mitt." The result has become the consummate lounge. In continuous production since its introduction, the Eames Lounge Chair is widely considered one of the most significant designs of the 20th century. Pairing soft, inviting leather with the sleek form of molded wood, this piece was the culmination of the Eameses' efforts to create a club chair using the molded plywood technology that they pioneered in the '40s. Even today, each piece is assembled by hand to ensure the highest level of quality and craftsmanship, and you'll be pleased to discover that this chair gets even better with use and age. The configuration of this chair is a registered trademark, and this is the authentic Eames Lounge Chair by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Seven-ply walnut or santos palisander veneer; molded plywood frame; die-cast aluminum swivel base and back braces; polyurethane foam cushions; stainless steel leveling floor glides; Spinneybeck® Vicenza leather upholstery. Design Within Reach NelsonTM Cigar Wall Sconce Design Within Reach NelsonTM Cigar Wall Sconce More Info Product cell

Architect George Nelson, who was Herman Miller's design director from 1945 to 1972, once said, "Every truly original idea seems to find its most important expression in a chair." And then he blew the doors off lighting design. While outfitting his office, Nelson discovered a silk-covered Swedish hanging lamp that he coveted but found too expensive. He then recalled seeing a photo in the paper of Liberty ships being mothballed "by having the decks covered with netting and then being sprayed with a self-webbing plastic," which got him thinking. "And then, Whammo!" Inspiration struck, and by the next night, Nelson had designed his first Bubble Lamp® (1952) by spinning a skeleton of steel wires on a turntable and shooting it with translucent plastic until it was covered in a smooth, washable film. "When you put a light in it, it glowed." This is the authentic Bubble Lamp, produced in partnership with the George Nelson Foundation. Bulb (not included): LED, CFL or incandescent; E26 base; 150W max. UL Listed. Made in U.S.A. Design Within Reach Bertoia Two-Tone Side Chair with Seat Pad Design Within Reach Bertoia Two-Tone Side Chair with Seat Pad More Info Product cell

With his iconic seating collection, Harry Bertoia transformed industrial wire rods into a new furniture form. The events that made this work possible began a decade earlier at Cranbrook Academy of Art, when Bertoia met Florence Knoll (then Florence Schust). Years later, the Italian-born designer was invited to work for Florence and her husband, Hans Knoll. Bertoia was given the freedom to work on whatever suited him, without being held to a strict design agenda, and the result of this arrangement was the Bertoia Seating Collection (1952). These extremely strong yet airy chairs are sculpted out of steel rods with a delicate filigreed appearance. In his art, Bertoia experimented with open forms and metal work, and his chairs were an extension of that work. "If you look at the chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture," said Bertoia. "Space passes through them." After designing his seating collection, Bertoia returned to focusing mostly on sculpture. This is an authentic Bertoia Chair produced by Knoll, with the Knoll logo stamped into its base. Seat pad is secured with metal snaps. Chair made in Italy; seat pad made in U.S.A. Defined by its dependable bentwood construction and simple form, the contract-quality Era Chair (1859) has been in continuous production for more than 150 years. By making the back of the chair and rear legs from a single piece of curved wood, designer Michael Thonet – who perfected the bentwood process for chair-making – eliminated the need for expensive and time-consuming hand-carved joints. The resulting chair is graceful, lightweight and surprisingly strong – the latter of which has been continually proven in cafés and restaurants all over the globe. As with any natural material, slight variations in the texture and color of the wood are to be expected and are not defects. Made in Czech Republic. Design Within Reach Noguchi Table Design Within Reach Noguchi Table More Info Product cell

Following his apprenticeship with the legendary Constantin Brancusi, sculptor Isamu Noguchi began to experiment in environmental design, theatrical sets – he was the only designer choreographer Martha Graham would work with – and, eventually, product design. He created his first furniture prototypes for Herman Miller in 1942 and went on to work with companies such as Steuben and Zenith. The Noguchi Table (1948) conceals nothing, revealing everything about the nature of simplicity. Two smoothly shaped pieces of solid wood interlock to form a tripod that supports a thick glass tabletop. The base is available in black, walnut, natural cherry and white ash, the latter of which is finished with a process that arrests the wood in its freshly cut state, resulting in a creamy white color that will not turn yellow over time. This is the authentic Noguchi Table by Herman Miller. The Noguchi Table must ship with our White Glove delivery service. Made in U.S.A. The configuration of this table is a registered trademark. To distinguish the real Noguchi table from the cheap knockoffs, Herman Miller has etched Noguchi's signature on the longest edge of the glass top and on a medallion on the underside of the base. Design Within Reach EggTM Chair Design Within Reach EggTM Chair More Info Product cell

Form follows function, and nowhere is that more apparent than in a sculpted chair that anticipates the curves of the human body. Arne Jacobsen designed the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, and for its busy lobby, he created the biomorphic Egg (1958). With this chair, Jacobsen embraced new materials that allowed him to shape fluid curves and single-piece molded shells. At a time when others were experimenting with bent tubular steel, Jacobsen focused on the upholstered armchair, believing a solution existed that was still true to modern ideals. Indeed, he met that goal. Set on a rotating base, the Egg Chair allows sitters to swivel toward a conversation area or away from others if privacy is desired. It also tilts back for relaxed lounging. This is the authentic Egg Chair manufactured by Republic of Fritz Hansen. Made in Poland. The Egg Chair tilts and swivels. Finely upholstered, the fabric or leather is hand-sewn onto the frame. Originally designed for the canteen at Novo Nordisk, an international Danish healthcare company, the Ant Chair (1952) faced an unclear future when the manufacturer expressed concern about its potential. But Arne Jacobsen believed in his product and offered to buy all the chairs if they didn't sell. Of course, he never had to make good on that offer, as the Ant Chair quickly became an international success. Jacobsen shaped the core of Danish design identity when he accommodated three different bends in one piece of plywood, simply by narrowing the chair back. DWR Exclusive Metalworker Xavier Pauchard not only brought the art of galvanizing steel to France but also took the process to the next level by creating the Marais A Chair (1934). The quintessential cafe chair, it was both elegant and robust enough to grace the decks of the S.S. Normandie ocean liner. After the death of Pauchard in 1948, his son Jean took over as managing director of their company, Tolix. In 1956, he designed an armchair to go with his father’s A Chair, naming it the A56. It takes 100 manual operations to create a Tolix chair, and 80 years after the company was founded, the Tolix name is recognized worldwide as best-in-class furniture. All Tolix furniture is still made in Autun, the same Burgundy town where the company first began. Design Within Reach Eames Molded Fiberglass Dowel-Leg Armchair (DFAW) Design Within Reach Eames Molded Fiberglass Dowel-Leg Armchair (DFAW) More Info Product cell

Charles and Ray Eames believed "design is a method of action," and they continually updated their work as new materials became available. "The chair that Charles and Ray were designing," explains grandson Eames Demetrios, "is the chair that's made tomorrow ." The duo originally designed their molded chair in metal and entered it as a prototype in MoMA's 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design, then refashioned it in light yet strong fiberglass just two years later. In the 1980s, after determining fiberglass production was detrimental to the environment, Herman Miller ceased production to explore more sustainable options, eventually choosing recyclable polypropylene. The company never quite forgot about fiberglass, however, and it recently began researching greener production methods. The Eames Molded Fiberglass Chair (1950) is the end result, constructed using a cleaner process but true to the original with its beloved variegated surface. This reintroduced version comes in a range of reformulated semi-gloss color pigments that faithfully reproduce the vintage ones. Its deep seat pocket and waterfall edge keep you comfortable by reducing pressure on the backs of your thighs. The seat back is left unfinished to maintain a slightly rough natural texture for easier gripping with your hands. This is an authentic Eames product by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. DFAW stands for dining-height fiberglass armchair with wood base. Made of 99% recyclable materials and covered by Herman Miller's take-back program for environmentally sound recycling (should you ever wish to part with this chair). Materials: Fiberglass-reinforced plastic seat; maple, walnut, ebony-stained ash or white ash dowels; black or white powder-coated wire. The process for making shells and the nature of fiberglass mean that each shell is unique and can possess traits such as tiny cavities in the surface, small points of lighter or darker color, or faint circular shadows where base attaches to shell. After refining their molded plastic chairs, Charles and Ray Eames began experimenting with making a chair from welded wire. To succeed, the Eameses had to figure out how to create a design with the strength they needed while keeping manufacturing costs as low as possible. Ultimately, they decided on using lighter-gauge wire doubled over into a rim that sandwiches heavier inner wire to form their Eames Wire Chair (1951), which won them their first American mechanical design patent. Its organic shape and airy silhouette are complemented by what's commonly referred to as an Eiffel base (because of its trademark shape). This is an authentic Eames product by Herman Miller. Swedish architect and designer Greta Magnusson Grossman broke through gender barriers to embark on a prolific career. She opened a store on Rodeo Drive, where her furniture and accessories quickly drew the attention of clients such as Greta Garbo, Joan Fontaine and Gracie Allen. In the 1950s, she founded her architecture office and designed 14 homes – 13 in California and one in Sweden – each one a showcase for her quietly dramatic approach. Design Within Reach Moller Model 80A Stool with Natural Woven Seat Design Within Reach Moller Model 80A Stool with Natural Woven Seat More Info Product cell

In 1944, Niels Otto Møller began his cabinetry company, where old craft traditions, like the hand-woven seat on the Model 80A Stool (1963), are still used today. Danish cord seats are known for their durability easily withstanding decades of frequent use and the strength of this material made it a smart substitute for tires when rubber was in short supply during WWII. What's amazing about that history is that Danish cord is made of tightly twisted paper. Being a natural material, Danish cord is very pleasant to sit on and the way that it's woven provides lasting comfort. Thirty years after he founded his company, Niels Otto Møller began exporting his chairs to Japan, which remains one of its biggest markets due to the simplicity and quality of the design and craftsmanship. Møllers is still a small family-owned business and is now managaged by Niels' son, Jørgen Henrik Møller. This Stool is an authentic, fully licensed product of J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik. The seat is woven by hand from one continuous 498-foot-long piece of cord. To make the frames, the company selects the raw wood themselves from environmentally friendly areas. Machines are never used for the final polish, as these devices treat all wood the same and can’t replicate the finish that comes from polishing by hand. Materials Teak or walnut frame; woven paper seat in natural.

Design Within Reach Series 7TM Monochrome Chair Design Within Reach Series 7TM Monochrome Chair More Info Product cell

Lacquered Veneer is a glossy finish with no visible wood grain. Materials: Pressure-molded sliced veneer shell with outer layer in lacquered or lazur-painted ash veneer; powder-coated tubular steel frame. Measurements:H 31" W 20.5" D 20" Seat H 18.3"

In a 1956 Time magazine cover story, Eero Saarinen said that "the underside of typical tables and chairs makes a confusing, unrestful world" and he was designing a new collection to "clear up the slum of legs in the U.S. home." This iconic table features a cast-aluminum base with abrasion-resistant Rilsan finish and a solid marble, wood veneer or laminate tabletop. Each is stamped with the KnollStudio logo and Eero Saarinen's signature. This is the authentic Saarinen Pedestal Table by Knoll. DWR Exclusive Born in Mainz, Germany, in 1924, Bernard Schottlander fled to England as a Jewish refugee in 1939. He worked as a welder for a short stint during the war before delving into sculpture at Leeds College of Art and the Anglo-French art center in St. John's Wood. A year later, he went on to open his own design studio and began creating new pieces in limited editions. An admirer of Alexander Calder, the American sculptor perhaps best known as originator of the mobile, Schottlander created his Mantis Collection (1951) as an homage. Movement being intrinsic to his work, he devised clever adjustable frames constructed of strong yet flexible steel rods combined with counterweights. He then fabricated shades from aluminum using repoussé and chasing techniques, relying on his trained sculptor's eye to produce beautifully flowing shapes that set the symmetrical and asymmetrical in opposition. His lamps – much like his idol's mobiles – appear to defy gravity with their floating forms. Bulb (not included): LED, CFL or incandescent; E12 base; 40W max. This is the authentic Mantis Collection. Made in China. Materials: Painted steel arm and base; painted aluminum shade; nickeled brass ball joint. Measurements:H 62"–66.5" D 27"–42.5" Shade Diameter 10.75"

Design Within Reach Wassily Chair Design Within Reach Wassily Chair More Info Product cell

In spirit and stature, Marcel Breuer's Wassily Chair (1925) from Knoll has few equals. Believed to be the first bent tubular steel chair design, the Wassily Chair distills the traditional club chair to a series of strong, spare lines, executed with dynamic material counterpoint. The gleaming chrome-finished tubular steel frame – inspired by the graceful, curving handlebars of the Adler bicycle – is seamless in its assemblage. Thick cowhide leather, belting leather or canvas slings create the design's seating surfaces, which maintain their crisp tautness for decades. Named for Wassily Kandinsky, the father of abstract painting and a colleague of Breuer's at the Bauhaus, the Wassily Chair is a symbol of the industrial heroism and engineering invention of the early 20th century. Made in Italy. Each piece is stamped with the KnollStudio logo and the designer's signature. The Wassily Chair is a registered trademark of Knoll, Inc., manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Processed in the Santa Croce region of Italy, 100% vegetable-tanned, aniline-dyed Spinneybeck® belting leather is smooth, with a tight-grain texture and rich saturated color; it has a light, protective, water-resistant finish. Charles and Ray Eames believed that "design is a method of action," and they continually updated their work as new materials became available. Their Molded Plastic chairs were originally designed in metal and entered as a prototype in MoMA's 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design. They then changed the material to fiberglass in 1950, and today the chairs are made of recyclable polypropylene. Charles was dissatisfied with the fiberglass, and it wasn't until after his death that the matte finish he desired was achieved, thanks to advances in materials. "The chair that Charles and Ray were designing," explains grandson Eames Demetrios, "is the chair that's made tomorrow ." Charles and Ray Eames believed "design is a method of action," and they continually updated their work as new materials became available. DFSW stands for dining-height fiberglass side chair with wood base. Made of 99% recyclable materials and covered by Herman Miller's take-back program for environmentally sound recycling (should you ever wish to part with this chair).
