Design Within Reach SwanTM Sofa Design Within Reach SwanTM Sofa More Info Product cell

Before the Swan Sofa (1958), Arne Jacobsen's architecture and designs were shaped by an assumption of materials' natural ways of resisting. In other words, he could make them go only so far in becoming the structures he desired. With new technologies, however, the old rules no longer applied, and he was able to shape fluid curves and single-piece molded shells. The Swan Sofa is now made from polyurethane foam, but at the time, Jacobsen used Styropore® to create its continuous shape. Designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, for which Jacobsen was the architect. A single upholsterer hand-sews the fabric onto the frame of Swan. Original design and licensed manufacture by Republic of Fritz Hansen. Made in Poland. Materials: Fiberglass-reinforced, polyurethane foam shell; injection-molded aluminum base; full-grain leather or fabric upholstery. Fame: Fame® by Gabriel fabric (95% wool, 5% polyamide). Milani: Milani fabric (70% viscose, 30% linen). Tonus: Maharam Tonus by Kvadrat® fabric (90% wool, 10% Helanca®). Classic: Full-grain leather top-coated for durability. Elegance: Full-grain aniline-dyed leather with light structure and light impregnation; patinas over time with natural markings. Optical: Full-grain leather top-coated and light protective finish. Design Within Reach Sand Bar Design Within Reach Sand Bar More Info Product cell

Bonnie Edelman's latest series was born out of experimentation during a family vacation in Uruguay several years ago. While driving through the countryside, she mistakenly captured an out-of-focus image. In this digital age, she was tempted to erase her "error" immediately but held off for some reason. Weeks later, she came across the image again and fell in love with its abstract tranquil character and vibrant hues. Since then, she's captured others in a similar vein from shorelines, boats and airplanes, resulting in the aptly named Scapes (Land, Sea and Sky), her latest grand body of work. According to Edelman, embracing this unique style has given her a brand-new perspective on the world, allowing her to envision it in blurs of color rather than restrictive details. "Sand Bar" (2011), captured in the Turks and Caicos Islands, is available in two sizes. This archival-quality chromogenic print is face-mounted on quarter-inch-thick Plexiglas, then beautifully finished with flame-polished edges and acid-free Sintra foam backing. Each piece is signed and numbered. "Sand Bar" must ship with our White Glove delivery service. Materials: Archival-quality chromogenic print; Plexiglas; Sintra foam backing. Design Within Reach Chieftains Chair Design Within Reach Chieftains Chair More Info Product cell

With distinctive shapes inspired by primitive weaponry and a seat that appears suspended above the frame, the sculptural form of the Chieftains Chair (1949) changed the future of Danish design. Finn Juhl created the chair for the 1949 Cabinetmakers' Guild in Copenhagen. During the exhibition, King Frederick IX sat in the chair, causing a journalist to suggest calling it the "King's Chair." But Juhl didn't like how pretentious that sounded and said, "You had better call it a chieftain's chair," which the journalist did. (At some point the apostrophe was dropped.) This original is an authentic, fully licensed product of Onecollection, House of Finn JuhlTM. Made in Denmark. Finn Juhl believed that "the craftsman's ability to form is probably the same as that of a sculptor." The Chieftains Chair received the Danish Design Award in the Classics category for 2012. Materials: Teak and walnut frame; leather upholstery. Measurements:H 37.5" W 39" D 34.5" Seat H 13.5"

Design Within Reach BassamFellows Daybed Design Within Reach BassamFellows Daybed More Info Product cell

This Daybed (2004) was designed "to be seen in the round," says Craig Bassam, by which he means that it can be seen and used from all sides. Such an approach isn't surprising from a design team living in a glass house where furniture is visible from every angle, whether you're inside or out. The house is the work of Philip Johnson, the architect who designed the Glass House for his own private residence in New Canaan, Connecticut. To see how seamlessly this Daybed (and all the furniture BassamFellows has created) works in a space designed by the iconic Johnson makes it very clear that these are the next icons – destined to become highly collectible. Bassam is an architect whose career started with Bruce Eeles, a disciple of Marcel Breuer. His partner, Scott Fellows, is a Harvard MBA who transformed the Swiss firm Bally. Together they are BassamFellows, described as "the design world's A-team" by The Times of London . Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's MR Adjustable Chaise was designed in 1927 as part of his contribution to the Weissenhof exhibit in Stuttgart, Germany. (When asked why he created chairs with generously sized seats, Mies van der Rohe allegedly replied that he designs chairs he'd be most comfortable sitting in.) The MR Chaise, still made to his specifications, is perfectly balanced, featuring the material innovation and lack of ornamentation that epitomize the International Style. It was awarded the Museum of Modern Art Award in 1977 and the Design Center Stuttgart Award in 1978. The frame of this piece is stamped with the KnollStudio logo and Mies van der Rohe's signature. Arne Jacobsen conceived of a complete and holistic aesthetic for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. Jacobsen had a very personal connection to this collection, as it was based on a sofa that he had created for his own home. DWR Exclusive After studying at the famous Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and working for architect Vilhelm Lauritzen, Finn Juhl set up his own design office in 1945. Later that year, Juhl and master cabinetmaker Niels Voder, collaborators since 1937, created a buzz at the Cabinetmakers' Guild exhibition with their expressive, sculptural pieces. In 1951, Juhl went on to make his stateside debut at the Good Design exhibit in Chicago and at MoMA in New York, and he represented Denmark in designing a meeting chamber at United Nations Headquarters. The trained architect and self-taught furniture designer drew the inspiration for his Finn Juhl Credenza (1955) from the cubist movement and Goethe's color wheel, reflected in the piece's simple geometric shapes and interlocking planes and its sliding doors and six trays finished in varying shades of blue lacquer. The left interior has two fixed shelves, the right an open compartment next to the one for the trays. Although best known for her elegant modernist tubular steel furniture of the 1920s and 1930s, Charlotte Perriand also experimented with materials and produced craft-based designs during the three decades spent collaborating with Le Corbusier Group. In 1940, while living and working in Japan, Perriand conceived of the Outdoor Tokyo Chaise, a reinterpretation of Le Corbusier's LC4 Chaise Longue – but it was never produced. That is, until now. In 2012, more than 60 years later, Tokyo was put into production for the first time. Available in bamboo or teak, Tokyo is a fanciful combination of nature and the rational aesthetic of the International Style. Sitting atop a solid-wood base, its seat is composed of 12 curved wooden strips, which are connected to the curved bars below using satin brass studs. The seat pad and headrest are covered in water-draining, UV-resistant Sunbrella® fabric. DWR Exclusive Shortly before Finn Juhl became a world-renowned name, he was a self-taught furniture designer and trained architect who had just opened his own office. Working in collaboration with master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder, the pair was the buzz of the 1945 Cabinetmakers' Guild exhibition with their expressive, sculptural pieces. One such item was the Model 45 Armchair (1945), which broke from tradition by freeing the upholstered areas from the wood frame. With the Model 45, Juhl refined the type of easy chair that he had been working on for many years; creating the type of elegant, tantalizing expression for which this designer is still without rival. This original is an authentic, fully licensed product of Onecollection, House of Finn JuhlTM. Made in Denmark. Finn Juhl made his U.S. debut in 1951, at the "Good Design" exhibit in Chicago and at MoMA in New York. When Juhl was 39, he was the architect appointed to represent Denmark in creating the interior of a meeting hall at the United Nations headquarters in New York. DWR Exclusive Owner of more than 400 patents, self-taught inventor Poul Cadovius constantly sought smarter solutions for everything from furniture to bus shelters to sailboats. In the mid-1940s, he devised an ingenious wall-mounted shelving system to save floor space: the Royal System (1948). After the system's introduction, Cadovius' three-employee firm soon became the largest furniture manufacturer in Denmark, exporting to countries worldwide. In 2010, Cadovius gave the rights to produce the design to Danish company dk3. A year later, he died at the age of 99, but the project continued under the watchful eye of his widow, Evy, who made sure it stayed true to her husband's high standards. The most successful furniture collection in Denmark for three decades, the Royal System is back in production and available only at DWR. Use it in entryways, living rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms – wherever you want to lift space-stealing furniture off the floor and have more room for living. All pieces are finely crafted using time-honored techniques perfected over centuries by Danish woodworkers. Assembly not included with White Glove delivery service. Made in Denmark. Shelves will flex very slightly over time but will still retain their structural integrity. We recommend a weight limit of 35 pounds per shelf to maintain a straight profile. In 2003, while opening their homewares store Niche in SoHo, Jeremy Pyles and Mary Welch were unable to find lights that satisfied their "super picky sensibilities." Fast-forward several years later, and we now have his Sola 36 Chandelier (2009), which takes obvious styling cues from the original Stamen. This chandelier features a carefully handcrafted aluminum canopy and five hand-blown glass globes with Edison light bulbs for a nostalgic touch that juxtaposes nicely with the piece's decidedly modern feel. Design Within Reach Bertoia AsymmetricTM Chaise with Full Cover Design Within Reach Bertoia AsymmetricTM Chaise with Full Cover More Info Product cell

With his iconic seating collection, Harry Bertoia transformed industrial wire rods into a new furniture form. The events that made this work possible began a decade earlier at Cranbrook Academy of Art, when Bertoia met Florence Knoll (then Florence Schust). Years later, the Italian-born designer was invited to work for Florence and her husband, Hans Knoll. Bertoia was given the freedom to work on whatever suited him, without being held to a strict design agenda, and the result of this arrangement was the Bertoia Seating Collection (1952). Featuring a delicate filigreed appearance that's supremely strong, these airy seats are sculpted out of steel rods. In his art, Bertoia experimented with open forms and metal work, and these chairs were an extension of that work. "If you look at the chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture," said Bertoia. "Space passes through them." After designing his seating collection, Bertoia returned to focusing mostly on sculpture. This is the authentic Bertoia Asymmetric Chaise produced by Knoll. The Knoll logo is stamped into its base. Available with seat pad or full cover. Chair made in Italy; seat pad made in U.S.A. This masterpiece of midcentury experimental design remained a prototype for more than 50 years. Knoll brought it into production in 2005. White frame can be used outdoors with limited exposure to the elements. Chrome frame is not for outdoor use. Vinyl seat pad can be used outdoors and is secured to chair with metal snaps. Bouclé cover is not for outdoor use. Form follows function, and nowhere is that more apparent than in a sculpted chair that anticipates the curves of the human body. Arne Jacobsen designed the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, and for its busy lobby, he created the biomorphic Egg (1958). With this chair, Jacobsen embraced new materials that allowed him to shape fluid curves and single-piece molded shells. At a time when others were experimenting with bent tubular steel, Jacobsen focused on the upholstered armchair, believing a solution existed that was still true to modern ideals. Indeed, he met that goal. Set on a rotating base, the Egg Chair allows sitters to swivel toward a conversation area or away from others if privacy is desired. It also tilts back for relaxed lounging. This is the authentic Egg Chair manufactured by Republic of Fritz Hansen. Made in Poland. The Egg Chair tilts and swivels. Finely upholstered, the fabric or leather is hand-sewn onto the frame.
