Design Within Reach Midcentury Sunshade Design Within Reach Midcentury Sunshade More Info Product cell

DWR Exclusive It's no mistake that the Midcentury Sunshade (1955) evokes the minimalist aesthetic of Southern California modern in the 1950s: It was developed by Brown Jordan for the Case Study houses. The shade's sculptural form is dictated by its versatile functionality. Its small footprint allows for flexible placement, and the rotating shade is easy to adjust as the sun moves across the sky or whenever you change seats or switch activities. To rotate the Sunshade from horizontal to vertical, simply loosen and retighten the handle at the top of the pole. Contract quality, the Midcentury Sunshade works well in multiples to shade individual lounge chairs or dining tables. The Mobile Stand (sold separately) is made from concrete-filled aluminum with Tuff-WheelsTM for easy maneuverability. Robert Brown and Hubert Jordan, who started their California-based company in 1945, have since helped to define the shape of modern outdoor leisure furniture and accessories. A PVC insert in the hole of the base will need to be removed prior to installation. Made in Mexico. Stand sold separately. Materials: Aluminum frame; Versatex® vinyl shade; stainless steel hardware. Design Within Reach Ktribe S2 Pendant Design Within Reach Ktribe S2 Pendant More Info Product cell

Philippe Starck jump-started his career by designing two nightclub interiors in Paris in the 1970s. The success of the clubs won the attention of President Francois Mitterand, who asked Starck to refurbish one of the private apartments in the Elysee Palace. Two years later, Starck designed the interior of the Café Costes, Paris, and was on his way to becoming a design celebrity. In quick succession, he created elegant interiors for the Royalton and Paramount hotels in New York, the Delano in Miami and the Mondrian in Los Angeles. He also began to produce chairs, lamps, motorbikes and boats. Starck's approach to design is subversive, intelligent and always interesting. His objects surprise and delight even as they transgress boundaries and subvert expectations. For his Ktribe Pendant (2005), Starck used a special polycarbonate, and when the lamp is lit, the shade reveals a diffuser hidden inside. When the lamp is off, the internal diffuser is invisible. Design Within Reach Tuuci Ocean Master Manta Shade Design Within Reach Tuuci Ocean Master Manta Shade More Info Product cell

Inspired by the graceful flow of a manta ray through the ocean, Tuuci Manta (2001) offers you protection from the elements without obstructing the view. It features a clever cam cleat and pulley system to raise and lower the shade with ease. "I sought to redefine what was previously known as an umbrella," says Clarke. Design Within Reach Kong Barstool with Choice of Arms Design Within Reach Kong Barstool with Choice of Arms More Info Product cell

Leave it to designer Philippe Starck to find inspiration in the furniture of Versailles when creating a chair for a Chinese restaurant in Paris. The Kong Barstool (2002) is handcrafted in Pennsylvania using the same 77-step process Emeco first developed for its Navy Chair. While the shape of Kong recalls more delicate French designs, the manufacturing of this chair gives it an ability to stand up to even the most unruly of patrons. A proprietary heat treatment makes the aluminum three times stronger than steel, and all Emeco chairs and stools are tested to withstand 1,700 pounds of weight (which is good to know in case that restaurant in Paris is very popular). Design Within Reach Eames Molded Fiberglass Dowel-Leg Side Chair (DFSW) Design Within Reach Eames Molded Fiberglass Dowel-Leg Side Chair (DFSW) More Info Product cell

Charles and Ray Eames believed "design is a method of action," and they continually updated their work as new materials became available. "The chair that Charles and Ray were designing," explains grandson Eames Demetrios, "is the chair that's made tomorrow ." The duo originally designed their molded chair in metal and entered it as a prototype in MoMA's 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design, then refashioned it in light yet strong fiberglass just two years later. In the 1980s, after determining fiberglass production was detrimental to the environment, Herman Miller ceased production to explore more sustainable options, eventually choosing recyclable polypropylene. The company never quite forgot about fiberglass, however, and it recently began researching greener production methods. The Eames Molded Fiberglass Chair (1950) is the end result, constructed using a cleaner process but true to the original with its beloved variegated surface. This reintroduced version comes in a range of reformulated semi-gloss color pigments that faithfully reproduce the vintage ones. Its deep seat pocket and waterfall edge keep you comfortable by reducing pressure on the backs of your thighs. The seat back is left unfinished to maintain a slightly rough natural texture for easier gripping with your hands. This is an authentic Eames product by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. DFSW stands for dining-height fiberglass side chair with wood base. Made of 99% recyclable materials and covered by Herman Miller's take-back program for environmentally sound recycling (should you ever wish to part with this chair). The Etch Candleholder (2010) is digitally manufactured via an industrial process used to produce electronics such as circuit boards. The advanced method allows intricate patterns to be cut – or etched – directly into the metal. With its geodesic structure, one candleholder will throw a mass of interesting shadows in all directions, and multiple candleholders can be locked together to create a larger centerpiece. Born in Tunisia and raised in England, designer Tom Dixon has a reputation that frequently precedes him. His bad boy mystique – Dixon dropped out of art school following a motorcycle accident and spent time playing bass in a rock band – is intriguing when juxtaposed with his unmistakable talent and emergence as one of England's most influential designers. Candle not included. Made in China. Materials: Laser-cut brass, stainless steel or black powder-coated stainless steel. Measurements:Diameter: 4.75"

Design Within Reach Deck Light Design Within Reach Deck Light More Info Product cell

DWR Exclusive Originally known as Davey & Co., the company was established in 1885 and has roots dating back to the shipyards of 19th-century London. Its clients back then were the marine merchants operating out of London's West India Docks, and Davey Lights graced the decks of many of history's best-known vessels, including, it is said, the Titanic. Architects and designers have been longtime fans of Davey's industrial aesthetic, like their Deck Light (1920s), and satisfying the needs of this market helped the company continue to thrive. When manufacturing challenges brought the threat of closure, Peter Bowles stepped in and purchased the company. As part of Original BTC, which Bowles founded, Davey Lighting now supplies marine, industrial and decorative lighting to residential and contract customers – making Davey available to the public (instead of only to the trade) for the first time. All components are handcrafted by small specialist suppliers according to centuries-old traditions. Bulbs (not included) 60W/GLS/E26 or compact fluorescent equivalent. Made in England. Design Within Reach Dennie Chair Design Within Reach Dennie Chair More Info Product cell

Born in Copenhagen in 1923, Nanna Ditzel was a groundbreaking modernist – her work spanned all areas of design. Trained as a cabinetmaker, she opened a studio with her husband Jørgen in 1946, designing furniture, ceramics, jewelry and textiles. Ditzel's Hallingdal fabric, designed in 1965, has been in continuous production since, becoming one of Kvadrat's best-selling products. Her Dennie Chair (1956), originally designed for Fritz Hansen, was a fixture in the Ditzel household but was never produced on a large scale. Nanna and Jørgen's daughter, Dennie (the chair's namesake), approached House of Finn Juhl about bringing this comfortable and cozy – yet minimal – design back into production. Compactly scaled with an elegant splay-leg base in chromed steel, it suits a living room, den or kid's room – Dennie remembers being read books as a child from this "body holding" lounge chair. This nearly lost midcentury classic chair is upholstered, of course, in Ditzel's Hallingdal fabric. This original is an authentic, fully licensed product of House of Finn JuhlTM. Made in Denmark. DWR Exclusive Educated throughout Europe, Gordon Guillaumier earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in industrial design from Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) and the Domus Academy, respectively. From there, Guillaumier apprenticed with Baleri Associati before starting a collaboration with architect and designer Rodolfo Dordoni. Design Within Reach Pod Pendant Design Within Reach Pod Pendant More Info Product cell

The unique, sexy and subtle Pod Pendant (2004) is the work of Jeremy Pyles for Niche Modern, a company that happened somewhat by accident. When opening a homewares store in SoHo, Jeremy Pyles and Mary Welch were unable to find lights that satisfied their "super picky sensibilities." Then Jeremy saw a man selling blown-glass vases out of the back of his truck. The glass designer wasn't sure he could create the shape Jeremy was looking for – telling him that "glass is not meant to curve in on itself" – but the two of them kept at it, eventually creating three pendants to light the front of the Niche store. The lights weren't for sale, but customers kept asking for them, and a new business was born. Pod Pendants are partially hand-blown and partially made in a mold, and no two are exactly alike (like snowflakes). The result is a play of light and dark, strength and delicateness, simple lines and lush colors. The fixture is designed around the shape of the bulb (included): a tubular dimmable incandescent 120V/75W, which Jeremy selected after studying 30 or more bulbs. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Hand-blown glass. Measurements:H 12" Diameter 7" Cord L 4', 5 lbs.

Design Within Reach Colonial Chair Design Within Reach Colonial Chair More Info Product cell

Impossibly thin Danish oiled oak combines with handwoven cane and luxurious aniline leather in the Colonial Chair and Footstool (1949) – Ole Wanscher's most famous and enduring design. Defying gravity through masterful construction, with a compelling material contrast, its name honors the Danish designer's fascination with English furnishings from the 1700s. A slightly more conservative strand of Danish modern than we see from masters like Finn Juhl and Hans Wegner, Wanscher's work reflects his scholarly nature: He served as professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture (his alma mater) from 1955 to 1973. Designed in 1949, the Colonial wasn't put into production until the mid-1950s, when Wanscher stumbled on a collaboration with PJ Furniture through Mobilia magazine editor, Gunnar Bratvold. (Carl Hansen & Søn acquired the right to produce the Colonial Chair and Footstool in 2012.) Wanscher gained a good deal of notoriety in Denmark in the '50s and '60s. In 1958, the Danish newspaper Politiken declared, "Owning a Wanscher chair is an adventure every day, and will be so even several hundred years from now, for this is how long it lasts." Made in Denmark. Materials: Danish oiled oak; handwoven cane; full-grain, pure aniline, naked leather; polydown cushion filling (50% down, 50% foam). Design Within Reach Granit Salad Plate Design Within Reach Granit Salad Plate More Info Product cell

DWR Exclusive In 1926, the Kispester-Granit factory in Budapest hired Eva Zeisel, who was 20 years old at the time, as a designer. It was only her first job, but the company was so impressed with her initial work that they created a special art department for her. The employees, who normally produced ceramic sinks, all wanted to work with Zeisel as she brought elegant vases, whimsical rhinoceros-shaped ashtrays and beautiful teapots into the product mix. The factory closed her department after just one year, but the experience sparked a brilliant career. Almost 60 years later, Zeisel returned to the factory and designed the Granit Collection (1983). Though widely exhibited, the set – which features her signature fluid, sensuous curves – wasn't put into production until 2009. DWR worked closely with Zeisel to ensure that Granit adheres to her exacting standards. "I like the way the very thin, hard edges of the plates change into a soft, inviting bellybutton," she said. "All the pieces together make a very nice family." The plates and bowls each feature a dimple in the center, and their matte white finish offers a neutral backdrop for culinary delights. This collection is food, microwave and dishwasher safe. Made in China. Materials: Stoneware. Measurements:H 1.25" Diameter 8.25"

Design Within Reach Tolix Marais Counter Stool with High Back Design Within Reach Tolix Marais Counter Stool with High Back More Info Product cell

DWR Exclusive Metalworker Xavier Pauchard not only brought the art of galvanizing steel to France but also took the process to the next level by creating the Marais A Chair (1934), as well as a selection of stools. The quintessential cafe collection, Tolix was both elegant and robust enough to grace the decks of the S.S. Normandie ocean liner, and 80 years after the company was founded, the Tolix name is recognized worldwide as best-in-class furniture. In 2006, the company introduced the Tolix Stool with High Back in response to customers' requests. All Tolix furniture is still made in Autun, the same Burgundy town where the company first began. Slight surface abrasions and markings are characteristic of the material and part of its hardworking machine aesthetic. Made in France. Tolix products are protected by copyright, making it illegal for another company to clone this stool. At DWR, the Tolix products we sell are 100% authentic. The Marais Collection should be protected from moisture and kept indoors when not in use to maintain its finish.
