Design Within Reach Bertoia Bench Design Within Reach Bertoia Bench

With his iconic seating collection, Harry Bertoia transformed industrial wire rods into a new furniture form. The events that made this work possible began a decade earlier at Cranbrook Academy of Art, when Bertoia met Florence Knoll (then Florence Schust). Years later, the Italian-born designer was invited to work for Florence and her husband, Hans Knoll. Bertoia was given the freedom to work on whatever suited him, without being held to a strict design agenda, and the result of this arrangement was the Bertoia Seating Collection (1952). Featuring a delicate filigreed appearance thats supremely strong, the base of the Bertoia Bench is sculpted out of steel rods. The seat is crafted of painted wood slats that are pretreated to prevent sagging or warping. Not suitable for outdoor use. This is the authentic Bertoia Bench produced by Knoll. The Knoll logo is stamped into its base. Made in Italy. Materials: Welded steel rods; polished chrome finish with chrome connections or bonded Rilsan® finish with stainless steel connections; solid wood slats pretreated to prevent sagging or warping, with black or white painted finish. Measurements:H 15.25" W 72" D 19"

Design Within Reach Jens Bench Design Within Reach Jens Bench

DWR Exclusive Running into legendary designer Jens Risom in the halls at DWR headquarters was one of the many pleasures of working here. Over the years, we collaborated with Risom on a number of product launches. The Jens Bench (2008) came about when we worked with him to re-launch his Chair and Ottoman, originally designed in 1949 for the Caribe Hilton Hotel in Puerto Rico. Decades had passed since this collection was in production, and Risom worked closely with us on every step of its return, from reviewing prototypes, to adjusting tiny details, to advocating cost-effective changes in the manufacturing process. Like all the furniture by this iconic designer, this collection has a subtle Scandinavian sensibility that works with modern and traditional settings. Or, as Risom put it, Good design means that anything good will go well with other equally good things. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Solid oak or walnut frame; solid plywood top with oak or walnut veneer; fabric or Elmosoft Scandinavian semi-aniline leather upholstery. Measurements:H 20" W 63" D 18"
