Design Within Reach Outdoor LC1 Sling Chair Design Within Reach Outdoor LC1 Sling Chair

Le Corbusier regarded traditional furnishings, with their structures hidden beneath wads of padding and upholstery, as relics of the past. Partnering with Charlotte Perriand and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret, Le Corbusier stripped away all excess to create the sleek, elemental LC1 Chair (1928). The LC Series was originally designed for indoor use, but after a visit to Villa Savoye, where some of the pieces were being used on the outdoor terrace, Cassina was inspired to create outdoor-safe models. The manufacturer spent three years working closely with the Le Corbusier Foundation to develop a product that was within the Foundations parameters: to be the same or better quality than indoor. Cassina opted for better, using hand-polished AISI 304 stainless steel with silver welding, as opposed to chrome, to construct the frames, a material with extreme resistance to corrosion that is actually more authentic to the product; chrome was not used until the 1970s/1980s. The silver welding will patina over time and develop a halo. The back of the chair is attached to the frame by a rod that allows the angle of tilt to change – as the user shifts from one sitting position to another, the chair back moves, offering continuous support. The waterproof, UV-resistant Sunbrella® fabric is held in place by stainless steel springs that provide a comfortable give. Each piece is signed, numbered and, as a product of Cassina's Masters Collection, manufactured by Cassina under exclusive worldwide license from the Le Corbusier Foundation. Made in Italy. Winner of Wallpaper* Design Award 2012 for Best Domestic Design. A protective, water-repellant cover is included. Design Within Reach Outdoor LC7 Swivel Chair Design Within Reach Outdoor LC7 Swivel Chair

The LC7 Swivel Chair (1928) evolved from one of a number of experiments, including an attempt to fashion a chair by wrapping inner tubes from tires around a steel frame. As the Le Corbusier group refined such trials, a sensuous solution took form. A round, thickly padded seat rests on top of a curving claw-like base of tubular steel that resolves in a swivel mechanism, giving the seat pad a buoyant look. A curved, amply padded barrel, doubling as backrest and chair arms, links three tubular steel supports that fuse at the seat base. The LC Series was originally designed for indoor use, but after a visit to Villa Savoye, where some of the pieces were being used on the outdoor terrace, Cassina was inspired to create outdoor-safe models. The manufacturer spent three years working closely with the LC Foundation to develop a product that was within the foundations parameters: To be the same or better quality than indoor. The silver welding will patina over time and develop a halo. Sunbrella fabric covers the UV-resistant (and waterproof) seat and backrest cushions, which are wrapped in Ecofill – a hypoallergenic fiber that dries quickly. Design Within Reach Outdoor Eames Aluminum Group Lounge Chair Design Within Reach Outdoor Eames Aluminum Group Lounge Chair

The Eames® Aluminum Group Collection (1958) began as a special project for Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard, who needed seating for a home they were designing for industrialist J. Irwin Miller in Columbus, Indiana. The request was for leisure chairs light enough to move from indoors to out and strong enough to withstand the elements. At the time, the Eameses were exploring ways to use aluminum, which had been strengthened, refined and made more affordable since WWII. They constructed a lightweight die-cast frame for the project, then wrapped it in a sling – a sitting pocket that subtly conforms to the bodys shape. The result was a completely new type of seat and a departure from the idea of a chair as solid shell. While the original concept was for outdoor seating, the Eameses quickly recognized its possibilities for indoor use. However, in 2012, Herman Miller returned the Aluminum Group to its original intent, with new materials suitable for outdoor use. Constructed of 61% recycled materials, this chair is also 90% recyclable at the end of its useful life. Backed by a 12-year manufacturers warranty. This is an authentic Eames chair by Herman Miller. An alumnus of the Royal College of Art in London, Konstantin Grcic (pronounced GER-cheech) creates furniture that reflects his logical thought process, honest use of materials and respect for production methods. To him, design involves much more than having fun. Its hard work, serious work, says the German designer. You have to think not only about the object youre designing, but everything else about it, from how it will be produced to who will be using it, to what happens to it after it goes through its life cycle. So designing is a big responsibility. Semi-reclined and low-slung for comfort, his Medici Chair (2012) is a modern take on the classic Adirondack. Fashioned only from three-quarter-inch-thick planks, Medici speaks to the production process at its start, when a tree trunk is cut into lumber. This chair is finished using a proprietary heat-treating and hand-oiling process that protects it from the elements. BIFMA approved. Craving furniture that could stand up to the salty environment of her seaside home in Florida, Florence Knoll called on Richard Schultz to create a decent set of outdoor furniture made out of materials that wont rust or corrode. That was in 1962, and Schultz spent the next four years designing his refined 1966 Collection, originally known as the Knoll Leisure Collection. At a time when most outdoor furniture was stamped out of metal with backrests shaped like bouquets of flowers, the 1966 Collection brought the clean lines and balanced proportions of indoor modern furniture to outdoor living. In the years since its debut, the collection has been re-engineered to take advantage of modern materials like Teflon® thread. In creating the 1966 Collection, Schultz satisfied Florence Knolls request for outdoor furniture that lasts, and many of the sets purchased 50 years ago are still being enjoyed today. The inspiration for the Cabrio Lounge Chair (2009) came from a desire to strip away excess and greatly simplify the overly complicated Adirondack chairs that are found on the market today. Designers Greg Benson and Jeff Tally point out how the Cabrios single-plank back and wide arms are a nod toward the Westport chair, which was the inspiration for and predates the Adirondack. With a seat thats low to the ground and generously angled, Cabrio is built for casual lounging and enjoying the outdoors. This chair is made of recycled plastic reclaimed from post-consumer goods like milk jugs, which can be recycled again if necessary. Since Loll was founded in 2006, its use of recycled materials has kept millions of milk jugs out of landfills. The fade-resistant, waterproof, maintenance-free Cabrio Lounge Chair is made to last for years. Its no coincidence that it received a 2009 Good Design® Award from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design. The world met the Bellini Chair (1998) when Heller placed six chairs in an all-white, 51-foot-long booth at the annual furniture fair in Milan. Many asked, Is that chair by Mario Bellini? as soon as they saw the sleek, sculptural lines. Others questioned if there was a metal frame hidden inside (there isnt). DWR founder Rob Forbes saw it and fell in love. The DWR catalog was already at the printer but he stopped the presses to add the Bellini Chair to the cover. Today, Bellini Chairs are so popular that Heller is producing them seven days a week just to meet the demand. Crafted of injection-molded fiberglass-reinforced polypropylene, the Bellini Chair is a sturdy, stackable and lightweight chair that is as timeless and beautiful as it is versatile. DWR Exclusive This simple chair is the work of Christophe Pillet, who has worked with many luxury brands, including Holly Hunt, FontanaArte and Veuve Clicquot. Whether working as the design director for Lacoste or as the interior architect for the Hotel Sezz in St. Tropez, Pillet has won international acclaim for his high-voltage chic, distinguished by his taste for certain rhythms and time signatures (for which he credits his early music career). After earning his degree from Domus Academy in Milan, Pillet became part of the Memphis Group, assisting Michele De Lucchi. In 1993, he started his own agency in Paris and was named Designer of the Year at the Salon du Meuble de Paris that same year. In recent years, hes been drawn to more modest projects, in which practical character and economy are privileged over any other criteria, says the designer. His Shot Café Chair (2011) is certainly in keeping with this current emphasis, fulfilling the need for a comfortable, compact chair at a great price point.
