Design Within Reach Outdoor LC1 Sling Chair
Design Within Reach Outdoor LC1 Sling Chair

Le Corbusier regarded traditional furnishings, with their structures hidden beneath wads of padding and upholstery, as relics of the past. Partnering with Charlotte Perriand and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret, Le Corbusier stripped away all excess to create the sleek, elemental LC1 Chair (1928). The LC Series was originally designed for indoor use, but after a visit to Villa Savoye, where some of the pieces were being used on the outdoor terrace, Cassina was inspired to create outdoor-safe models. The manufacturer spent three years working closely with the Le Corbusier Foundation to develop a product that was within the Foundations parameters: to be the same or better quality than indoor. Cassina opted for better, using hand-polished AISI 304 stainless steel with silver welding, as opposed to chrome, to construct the frames, a material with extreme resistance to corrosion that is actually more authentic to the product; chrome was not used until the 1970s/1980s. The silver welding will patina over time and develop a halo. The back of the chair is attached to the frame by a rod that allows the angle of tilt to change – as the user shifts from one sitting position to another, the chair back moves, offering continuous support. The waterproof, UV-resistant Sunbrella® fabric is held in place by stainless steel springs that provide a comfortable give. Each piece is signed, numbered and, as a product of Cassina's Masters Collection, manufactured by Cassina under exclusive worldwide license from the Le Corbusier Foundation. Made in Italy. Winner of Wallpaper* Design Award 2012 for Best Domestic Design. A protective, water-repellant cover is included. Materials: Brush-polished AISI 304 stainless-steel frame with silver welded joints; stainless-steel screws and springs; plastic foot ends; Sunbrella® Sling fabric. Measurements:H 25.25" W 23.75" D 25.5" Seat H 15.75" Arm H 23"

Design Within Reach Petal Dining Table
Design Within Reach Petal Dining Table

A graduate of the Chicago Institute of Design, aka The New Bauhaus founded by Moholy-Nagy, Richard Schultz joined the team at Knoll in 1951. In his first year, Schultz worked with Florence Knoll in the interior design office and assisted Harry Bertoia on the development of his wire furniture collection. Schultz designed his indoor/outdoor Petal Table (1960) to accompany Bertoias wire chairs, leading to the launch of his first product for Knoll and one of the collections for which he is most known. Inspired by the sight of a Queen Annes Lace flower growing near his home, he designed the tabletop to have eight petals. He then mounted them on a cast aluminum spider that keeps each petal independent and allows the material to expand and contract with the weather. The Petal Table is included in the permanent collection at MoMA. This is the authentic Petal Table by Knoll. Made in U.S.A. Architect Philip Johnson was a fan of this collection. He used Petal Tables in his yard – and they remain as he left them, at the Glass House today. Materials: Vertical grain teak with natural finish or machined high-density polyurethane white tabletop; powder-coated cast aluminum spider and base; powder-coated steel stem; nylon floor glides. Measurements:H 28" Diameter 42"

Design Within Reach Sol y Luna Adjustable Chaise
Design Within Reach Sol y Luna Adjustable Chaise

DWR Exclusive Sol y Luna (1954) is an adaptation of Dan Johnson's Gazelle Collection, which was originally offered in wood or bronze, both with woven caning for the seat and back. However, due to the high cost of production and the intense hand labor involved, fewer than 150 pieces from the Gazelle line were ever produced. Now made in durable cast aluminum by outdoor manufacturer Brown Jordan, the design maintains Johnson's comfortable organic form. These pieces are shaped with the body in mind. The Adjustable Chaise back wraps around you and adjusts from upright to reclined (not fully flat); the seats are comfortably sloped for support in a relaxed position. Seat Pads sold separately. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Made in Mexico. Materials: Cast aluminum with powder-coated finish. SEAT PAD, 100% solution-dyed acrylic Suncloth® fabric. Design Within Reach Outdoor LC7 Swivel Chair
Design Within Reach Outdoor LC7 Swivel Chair

The LC7 Swivel Chair (1928) evolved from one of a number of experiments, including an attempt to fashion a chair by wrapping inner tubes from tires around a steel frame. As the Le Corbusier group refined such trials, a sensuous solution took form. A round, thickly padded seat rests on top of a curving claw-like base of tubular steel that resolves in a swivel mechanism, giving the seat pad a buoyant look. A curved, amply padded barrel, doubling as backrest and chair arms, links three tubular steel supports that fuse at the seat base. The LC Series was originally designed for indoor use, but after a visit to Villa Savoye, where some of the pieces were being used on the outdoor terrace, Cassina was inspired to create outdoor-safe models. The manufacturer spent three years working closely with the LC Foundation to develop a product that was within the foundations parameters: To be the same or better quality than indoor. The silver welding will patina over time and develop a halo. Sunbrella fabric covers the UV-resistant (and waterproof) seat and backrest cushions, which are wrapped in Ecofill – a hypoallergenic fiber that dries quickly. Each piece is signed and numbered and, as a product of Cassina's Masters Collection, is manufactured by Cassina under exclusive worldwide license from the Le Corbusier Foundation. Made in Italy. A protective, water-repellant cover is included. Materials: Brush-polished AISI 304 stainless-steel frame with silver welded joints; stainless-steel screws; plastic foot ends; hypoallergenic, biodegradable self-draining polyurethane foam; CFC-free polyurethane foam; polyester yarn netting; Sunbrella® Sling fabric. Design Within Reach 1966 Collection Ottoman
Design Within Reach 1966 Collection Ottoman

Craving furniture that could stand up to the salty environment of her seaside home in Florida, Florence Knoll called on Richard Schultz to create a decent set of outdoor furniture made out of materials that wont rust or corrode. That was in 1962, and Schultz spent the next four years designing his refined 1966 Collection, originally known as the Knoll Leisure Collection. At a time when most outdoor furniture was stamped out of metal with backrests shaped like bouquets of flowers, the 1966 Collection brought the clean lines and balanced proportions of indoor modern furniture to outdoor living. In the years since its debut, the collection has been re-engineered to take advantage of modern materials like Teflon® thread. In creating the 1966 Collection, Schultz satisfied Florence Knolls request for outdoor furniture that lasts, and many of the sets purchased 50 years ago are still being enjoyed today. The 1966 Collection is included in the permanent collection at MoMA. This is the authentic 1966 Ottoman by Knoll. Made in U.S.A. Fitted cover sold separately. Its noted for chairs with sling seats constructed of Batyline mesh, a supremely hardwearing outdoor textile praised for its exceptional tear strength, ability to retain shape and resistance to fading and mildewing season after season.
