Rejuvenation Red Mesa Navajo Pound Rug in w/ Yellow Highlights
Rejuvenation Red Mesa Navajo Pound Rug in w/ Yellow Highlights

This early 20th century Navajo rug features the Red Mesa motif, bordered with jagged zigzag patterns. Red Mesa was a trading post in Arizona, and the rugs from this outfit were known for their precision and intricacy. This is a 'pound' rug, dating from a period when some rugs actually sold by the pound! In this period, the weavers were tailoring their work more toward Anglo tastes - rugs rather than blankets, particular simplified motifs, and since Anglos equated a thicker weaving with quality, a heavier and thicker weave. This had the added benefit to the weaver of weighing more, and therefore fetching more money when sold by the pound. This masterful weaving features distinctive diagonal 'terminal' lines, and the handspun character of the yarns is especially evident in the lovely variegation of the naturally dyed gray and black.

Rejuvenation NW Coastal Native Button Blanket w/ Hunting Orca and Seal Motif
Rejuvenation NW Coastal Native Button Blanket w/ Hunting Orca and Seal Motif

Button blankets are made by the Haida, Tlingit, Kwakiutl, and other Native nations of the Northwest Coast of America & Canada. The tradition began in the mid-19th century, when wool blankets acquired from the Hudson's Bay Company traders began to be decorated with abalone or dentalium shell buttons in elaborate patters, with felt appliqués in different colors. Button blankets are traditionally worn like a cape during potlatches and while dancing in ceremonies. They are worn over the shoulders, with the crest design hanging on the back of the wearer. The central crest typically portrays a symbol of the wearer's clan and family heritage. This exquisite example was made sometime around 1950, with the wool blanket of that period, but using mostly antique hand-made 19th-century shell buttons. It is likely that the buttons were heirloom, perhaps reclaimed from earlier blankets, and it may be that this blanket is in essence a re-making of a family's heirloom blanket that had deteriorated. In any case, it is a stunningly beautiful work of art, depicting a fearsome hunting Orca whale chasing a pair of wily seals.

Rejuvenation Framed Red RCA TV Tubes Banner
Rejuvenation Framed Red RCA TV Tubes Banner

Screen-printed on bright red cotton, this banner reads "We use RCA Tubes - for the Picture of Quality." It was likely the table cloth for a display booth, as the writing would have hung horizontally along the edge of a square table. Based on the technique, materials and style, we've dated the piece to around 1950, although the RCA logo shown was used as early as 1919. We've framed the relic with solid wood moulding, acid-free archival mats and UV-blocking plexiglass. Historical Style: Industrial / Mid-Century Condition Notes: Some bleeding and staining in the fabric and printed graphics – see all photos for details.
