Design Within Reach Saarinen Side Table
In a 1956 Time magazine cover story, Eero Saarinen said that the underside of typical tables and chairs makes a confusing, unrestful world and he was designing a new collection to clear up the slum of legs in the U.S. home. Later that year, he completed his Pedestal Table (1956), whose form was inspired by a drop of high-viscosity liquid. This iconic table features a cast-aluminum base with abrasion-resistant Rilsan finish and a solid marble, wood veneer or laminate tabletop. Each is stamped with the KnollStudio logo and Eero Saarinens signature. This is the authentic Saarinen Pedestal Table by Knoll. Base made in China; tabletop made in Italy or U.S.A., depending on material. Stone masters carefully select marble with the best composition and veining to create tops for marble Saarinen Pedestal Tables. Please rest assured that each ones unique markings are not imperfections but rather the very traits that make it a true one of a kind. Polished-coated marble tops have a glossy polyester coating, and satin-coated marble tops have a matte satin polyester coating; both types help protect against stains. Materials: Cast-aluminum base with Rilsan® finish; solid marble, wood veneer or laminate tabletop with beveled edge. Design Within Reach T.710 Small Side Table
DWR Exclusive A native of Copenhagen, Jens Risom studied in his youth under furniture maker Kaare Klint, alongside the likes of Hans Wegner and Børge Mogensen. In 1939, he immigrated to the U.S. and began what would become a towering career, originally marked by his innovative work for Knoll and by the founding of his own studio in 1946, Jens Risom Design. Museum curators have credited him with providing a vital link between Scandinavian and American midcentury design, and his work is included in the collections of MoMA and the Cooper Hewitt, among many others. Risom introduced his T.710 Small Side Table (1950) at a time when he was experimenting with metal. He was fascinated by the negative space the table defines between its base and top and by the illusion of floating the top creates. This table is perfect for tight areas due to its compact size and small footprint. Stacks up to three high. Made in Malaysia. Materials: American walnut top; powder-coated steel base. Measurements:H 21" W 14" D 16"

Design Within Reach Atlas Side Table
DWR Exclusive Upon receiving a masters degree in industrial design from Pratt in 2005, Brad Ascalon was recognized by Wallpaper * magazine as one of the Ten Most Wanted emerging designers in the world. He grew up immersed in art and design, with his grandfather and father both being sculptors. In creating this collection, he was inspired by Atlas, the Greek mythological character condemned for eternity to carry the heavens on his shoulders. Translating this into a physical object, Ascalon was intrigued by the challenge of making an elegant frame that could carry the weight of solid stone or thick glass. The Atlas Table (2012), like Atlas himself, exemplifies strength and endurance. Top made in China; base made in U.S.A. Best of Year! Were proud to announce that the Atlas Table received Interior Design magazines top honor for 2013 in the side table category Materials: Solid North American black walnut base; solid marble or glass tabletop. Design Within Reach Helix Side Table
DWR Exclusive Atlanta-based industrial designer Chris Hardy, who made his design debut at Salone del Mobile in 2011, created the sculptural Helix Coffee Table (2012) for DWR. He gave it an odd number of legs and positioned the brass castings to radiate out from the center, resulting in a distinctive asymmetrical form that looks different from every angle. For Helix, I was inspired by the challenge of personalization in the modern world, and the increasing desire that we have to own objects that match our own styles and philosophies – in the way that art does, explains Hardy. Made by hand, the cast brass base has a natural finish thats soft and not highly polished; minor pitting and irregularities in the brass are typical of the casting process and are not defects. Thick and durable, the annealed glass tabletop is slowly cooled in a kiln to relieve internal stresses after its formed. Leveling glides adjust for uneven floors. Simple assembly required; no tools necessary. Base made in India; tabletop made in U.S.A. Materials: Cast brass; solid walnut; glass. Measurements:H 20" Diameter 20"
Design Within Reach Cage Side Table
DWR Exclusive Educated throughout Europe, Gordon Guillaumier earned his bachelors and masters degrees in industrial design from Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) and the Domus Academy, respectively. From there, Guillaumier apprenticed with Baleri Associati before starting a collaboration with architect and designer Rodolfo Dordoni. In 2002, he opened his own design studio in Milan, specializing in product and interior design. His alluring Cage Table Collection (2010), like many of his other works, is marked by its subtly flowing geometry. These tables feature precision-shaped one-piece bent steel bases that transition smoothly into platforms for their laminate tabletops, which are created by infusing numerous layers of paper with thermosetting resin and subjecting them to high pressure and heat. Fashioned to withstand years of heavy use, laminate surfaces boast exceptional resistance to scratching, staining, temperature extremes and sunlight exposure. Theyre also a cinch to clean. Made in Italy. Materials: High-pressure laminate top; painted bent steel frame. Measurements:H 22" Diameter 19.75"

Design Within Reach Royal System Shelving Extension Unit
DWR Exclusive Owner of more than 400 patents, self-taught inventor Poul Cadovius constantly sought smarter solutions for everything from furniture to bus shelters to sailboats. In the mid-1940s, he devised an ingenious wall-mounted shelving system to save floor space: the Royal System (1948). After the systems introduction, Cadovius three-employee firm soon became the largest furniture manufacturer in Denmark, exporting to countries worldwide. In 2010, Cadovius gave the rights to produce the design to Danish company dk3. A year later, he died at the age of 99, but the project continued under the watchful eye of his widow, Evy, who made sure it stayed true to her husbands high standards. The most successful furniture collection in Denmark for three decades, the Royal System is back in production and available only at DWR. Use it in entryways, living rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms – wherever you want to lift space-stealing furniture off the floor and have more room for living. All pieces are finely crafted using time-honored techniques perfected over centuries by Danish woodworkers. Assembly not included with White Glove delivery service. Made in Denmark. Design Within Reach NelsonTM Lantern Lamp with Stand
Architect George Nelson, who was Herman Millers design director from 1945 to 1972, once said, Every truly original idea seems to find its most important expression in a chair. And then he blew the doors off lighting design. While outfitting his office, Nelson discovered a silk-covered Swedish hanging lamp that he coveted but found too expensive. He then recalled seeing a photo in the paper of Liberty ships being mothballed by having the decks covered with netting and then being sprayed with a self-webbing plastic, which got him thinking. And then, Whammo! Inspiration struck, and by the next night, Nelson had designed his first Bubble Lamp® (1952) by spinning a skeleton of steel wires on a turntable and shooting it with translucent plastic until it was covered in a smooth, washable film. When you put a light in it, it glowed. This is the authentic Bubble Lamp, produced in partnership with the George Nelson Foundation. Bulb (not included): LED, CFL or incandescent; E26 base; 150W max. UL Listed. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Plastic polymer; steel frame and stand. Measurements:H 12.5" Diameter 11" Cord L 72"
Design Within Reach Krusin Side Table

In 2008, the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design included Krusin in Europe 40 under 40, an annual list of the most promising and emerging design talent in Europe. Seeing a need for simple and sophisticated guest seating and occasional tables, he created his Krusin Side Table (2011) with glass or marble top. The strong geometry of this piece is softened with radius and chamfer details. Suitable for contract use. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Ash, oak, walnut or ebonized oak frame; mortise-and-tenon construction; glass or satin-coated Arabescato marble tabletop. Measurements:H 18" W 18" D 18"
Design Within Reach Drum Side Table
Furniture that is too obviously designed, said Milo Baughman, is very interesting, but too often belongs only in museums. While we could certainly see his Drum Table (1970s) in a museum, it would earn its place there for its simplicity and lack of unnecessary ornamentation. Distilling the idea of an occasional table to its simplest form, Baughmans cylindrical design draws you in with its smoothness and warmth. It features seams that are painstakingly welded, ground and polished by hand until they blend in as much as possible. Once constructed, Drum is coated with bronze, oxidized and hand-relieved to give it a unique patina, eschewing the sterility of machine-made pieces. It includes leveling floor glides to compensate for uneven surfaces. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Steel with brushed bronze finish. Measurements:H 24" Diameter 22"
