Design Within Reach Table Lamps
Ludwig Mies van der Rohes MR Armless Lounge Chair was designed in 1927 as part of his contribution to the Weissenhof exhibit in Stuttgart, Germany. The chairs cantilevered design uses tubular steel, then a technological novelty, to create an intuitively accessible and ergonomic seat. (When asked why he created chairs with generously sized seats, Mies van der Rohe allegedly replied that he designs chairs hed be most comfortable sitting in.) The MR Armless Lounge Chair, still made to his specifications, is perfectly balanced, featuring the material innovation and lack of ornamentation that epitomize the International Style. It was awarded the Museum of Modern Art Award in 1977 and the Design Center Stuttgart Award in 1978. The frame of this piece is stamped with the KnollStudio logo and Mies van der Rohes signature. This is the authentic MR Armless Lounge Chair produced by Knoll®. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Polished tubular stainless steel frame; Spinneybeck® BL full-grain aniline leather sling. DWR Exclusive Born in Mainz, Germany, in 1924, Bernard Schottlander fled to England as a Jewish refugee in 1939. He worked as a welder for a short stint during the war before delving into sculpture at Leeds College of Art and the Anglo-French art center in St. Johns Wood. A year later, he went on to open his own design studio and began creating new pieces in limited editions. An admirer of Alexander Calder, the American sculptor perhaps best known as originator of the mobile, Schottlander created his Mantis Collection (1951) as an homage. Movement being intrinsic to his work, he devised clever adjustable frames constructed of strong yet flexible steel rods combined with counterweights. He then fabricated shades from aluminum using repoussé and chasing techniques, relying on his trained sculptors eye to produce beautifully flowing shapes that set the symmetrical and asymmetrical in opposition. His lamps – much like his idols mobiles – appear to defy gravity with their floating forms. Bulb (not included): LED, CFL or incandescent; E12 base; 40W max. This is the authentic Mantis Collection. Made in China. Materials: Painted steel arm and base; painted aluminum shade; nickeled brass ball joint. Measurements:H 25"–33" D 20.5"–32" Shade Diameter 8.75"
Philippe Starck jump-started his career by designing two nightclub interiors in Paris in the 1970s. The success of the clubs won the attention of President Francois Mitterand, who asked Starck to refurbish one of the private apartments in the Elysee Palace. Two years later, Starck designed the interior of the Café Costes, Paris, and was on his way to becoming a design celebrity. In quick succession, he created elegant interiors for the Royalton and Paramount hotels in New York, the Delano in Miami and the Mondrian in Los Angeles. He also began to produce chairs, lamps, motorbikes and boats. Starck's approach to design is subversive, intelligent and always interesting. His objects surprise and delight even as they transgress boundaries and subvert expectations. For his Ktribe Collection (2007), Starck used a special polycarbonate, and when the lamp is lit, the shade reveals a diffuser hidden inside. When the lamp is off, the internal diffuser is invisible. This is a dimmable lamp, with a dimmer switch on the cord. Bulb: 150W/120V/E27. UL Listed. Made in Italy by Flos. Unique shade creates an x-ray effect when lit. Materials: Polycarbonate; aluminum; PMMA (Polymethylmethacrylate); Zamak. Measurements:H 27.25" Diameter 15.5" Cord L 63"
Drawn to the translucency and versatility of bone china, Peter Bowles saw an opportunity to create something other than tableware with this time-honored material. The result is his Hector Collection (1992), which is beautifully crafted of hand-cast bone china. Creating these lights involves a highly skilled, labor-intensive process that begins with raw clay and ends with biscuit firing, glazing, glossing and firing again. When lit, these china shades have a translucent glow that allows for warm diffused light, and the pivoting shades allow you to direct the light as you wish. Attention to detail is at the heart of every Original BTC collection, right down to the braided cord, which was designed by Peter and can be found on every light his company makes. The Hector Collection is UL Listed and suitable for contract use. Bulb (not included): 40W/GLS/E27. Made in England. Materials: Natural bone china shade and base; satin chromed brass stem; braided, cotton-covered cord. Measurements:H 18.5" Shade Diameter 6"
After being schooled in industrial design and engineering at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College in London, Michael Anastassiades founded his own studio in 1994. His work falls somewhere in between the industrial and sculptural, especially his lighting, which consists of reflective materials such as polished bronze and mirrored glass in simple geometric shapes. Anastassiades pieces can be found in hotels, restaurants and shops worldwide, including the SoHo House New York, the Grand Hôtel Stockholm and Sergio Rossi boutiques. The IC Lamp (2013) possesses the poetic grace and balance that characterize all of his pieces, consisting of a blown glass diffuser mounted on an ultra-thin yet stable frame. Positioned in a seemingly precarious manner, as if its ready to drop any moment, the perched sphere lends captivating tension to the design. Bulb (included): 150W/T10/E26 frosted halogen. Made in Italy. Materials: Brass frame with clear finish or steel frame with chrome finish; frosted blown glass diffuser. Measurements:H 13.75" W 11" D 12"
Inspired by the simplicity and utility found in a pair of serving tongs, designer Peter Stathis created his Tube Top Lamp (2006). The satisfying composition features a transparent acrylic base that supports a lightweight mesh shade held in place by tension. The effect is that of a floating form over a barely visible base, tethered only by a fabric-covered cord. The Tube Top Lamp is available in a scale that encourages mixing sizes for an interesting display. Stathis work is included in the permanent collections of the Cranbrook Art Museum, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and MoMA in New York. On/off full-range dimmer. Bulb (included): one white incandescent 60W/120V/G16.5/candelabra base. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Clear acrylic base; vinyl-coated polymer fabric shade; fabric-covered cord. Architect and designer Antonio Citterio has developed hotels, offices and residences worldwide, while also producing furniture and accessories for companies like Vitra and Flos. His Kelvin LED Table Lamp (2010) is a smart solution that gives you warm, soft light from an energy-efficient light source. The quality of light, and the large spread it provides, is surprising for an LED lamp, which is why were excited to bring Kelvin into our assortment. This lamp is designed with a double pantograph arm and a 359-degree swiveling head, which includes LEDs and a diffuser. The entire structure – from the slender, square head to the base – is made of square tube in extruded aluminum alloy. Stainless steel springs and steel cables allow you to position Kelvin to suit the task at hand. Made in Italy. The best of both worlds: warm, soft light and energy-efficient LEDs. Swiveling head contains 30 LEDs (total power consumption 8.4 watts). ON/OFF switch is built into the diffuser head. Using special Flostouch technology, this switch needs only a slight touch to turn the lamp on or off, or toggle between two levels of light intensity. Materials: Die cast aluminum alloy; steel cables; stainless steel springs; water-based paint; LED. Measurements:H 18.5" W 22.25" Base D 6.5" Cord L 6'

The design is as clean as anything produced by the Bauhaus, yet the purity of the Elise Lamp (1998) has a softer edge very much in tune with today's sensibilities. Its creator is Pablo Pardo, a San Francisco-based industrial designer whose award-winning work centers around simplicity and utility. The Elise achieves both. It's a quietly beautiful lamp constructed of a finely machined aluminum base and translucent tubular diffuser that's neutral enough for a wide range of interiors. Bulb (included): 40W/frosted T-10 medium base/120 volt. Made in U.S.A. Sheds diffused light. Dimmer switch. Freestanding with heavy base. Materials: Aluminum base with satin finish; translucent polycarbonate diffuser; clear cord. Measurements:18-inch: H 18" Diameter 2.5" 12-inch: H 12" Diameter 2.5"
Philippe Starcks Miss K Table Lamp (2003) has fast become Flos Lightings best-selling product for its functionality-based dual aesthetic. When unlit, the polycarbonate lampshade shows subtle detail with a dark metallic tint. When lit, the lamp appears almost like an x-ray, with the bulb starkly visible behind the now-clear illuminated shade. The fluid pedestal base of the lamp is clear at all times. An on-cord dimmer takes the light from 0–100% luminosity, from atmospheric glow to reading-appropriate brightness. The lamps compact scale is suited to small tables and busy worktops. Bulb (included): halogen 100W/120V/E26/T10. Made in Italy by Flos. Materials: Polycarbonate. Measurements:H 17" Diameter 9"
Swedish architect and designer Greta Magnusson Grossman broke through gender barriers to embark on a prolific career. In 1940, she and her husband immigrated to the United States, where her approach to Swedish modernism struck a chord with single, professional women who felt that she understood their needs and sensibilities. She opened a store on Rodeo Drive, where her furniture and accessories quickly drew the attention of clients such as Greta Garbo, Joan Fontaine and Gracie Allen. In the 1950s, she founded her architecture office and designed 14 homes – 13 in California and one in Sweden – each one a showcase for her quietly dramatic approach. The Grasshopper Lamp (1948) has a lithe frame and an elongated conical shade that rotates to direct light where needed. This is an authentic Grossman lamp, produced to the designers original specifications. Bulb (not included): incandescent 40W/E12 or comparable CFL. Made in Denmark. Materials: Powder-coated steel shade; solid brass frame and hardware; fabric-covered cord. Measurements:H 16" W 5.5" D 15.5" Base Diameter 6"
Sculptor and designer Sebastian Wrong demonstrates his flair for bold, minimalist forms in his Spun Lamp (2001) for Flos. This lamp features satin-smooth machined aluminum construction available in high-gloss finishes for maximum dramatic impact. The fluid pedestal base stabilizes the design, and the full-range on-cord dimmer provides infinitely variable light. A sandblasted glass diffuser reduces glare. Bulb (included): halogen 100W/T10/E26 or comparable CFL/LED. Made in Italy. Materials: High-gloss painted or polished aluminum. Measurements:H 22.75" Diameter 15.5" Cord L 84"
DWR Exclusive Modern is, was and will always be clever. In that spirit today, intelligence remains at the core, says Theo Richardson, who, together with Alexander Williams and Charles Brill, founded New York-based design studio Rich Brilliant Willing (a pithy blending of surnames – Richardson, Brill and Williams) in 2007. RBW has quickly gained recognition for its cerebral designs, which emphasize the exploration of form, reinventing familiar objects with basic materials. Similarly, composition of each part of the Rich Brilliant Willing LED Table Lamp (2012) is based on its application. A wooden rectangular-prism shade adds warmth at the light source; a tubular steel arm lends strength and a twist – at the tip, an audio jack allows the shade to rotate 360 degrees – and a steel disc at the base provides support. Ships flat. Simple assembly required. UL Listed. Bulb (included): LED. Total power consumption 9 watts. Made in China. Materials: Solid American hickory with walnut stain or solid oak shade; clear-coated brushed steel arm; painted steel base; plastic fittings. Measurements:H 16" W 8" D 22.5"
Made from LEDs and recyclable aluminum, Pablo Pardos innovative Brazo Table Lamp (2006) is the first LED task light to feature an optical film lens for focus control, providing both a variable beam spread and focused directional light. In the shape of an inverted L, Brazos top arm lets you turn an outer aluminum layer over the white LEDs to focus the light as much or as little as is desired. This energy-efficient lighting solution is 97% recyclable. Made in China. The top piece freely rotates and also tilts up to 90 degrees. Height adjustable with a dimmer knob. Uses 18 high-output LEDs, which have an estimated life of 20 years with normal use. The simple, svelte Brazo won the 2007 Best of Competition Award at the Neocon Contract Furniture Exposition – a first for a lighting design. Materials: Glass; aluminum; LEDs. Measurements:H 14"–21" W 26.5" Base Diameter 8.5" Cord L 8'
