Anya Hindmarch was born in Maldon, England, in 1968 into an entrepreneurial family. She was schooled in Chelmsford, Essex. When she was 16, her mother gave her an old Gucci handbag, and at 18, sent her off to study Italian for a year in Florence. Here she noticed the popularity of the drawstring leather duffle bag among fashionable women. With an entrepreneurial spirit, she borrowed money to import some of the bags to England. The first Anya Hindmarch sale was born; she sold 500 of the bags through Harpers and Queen magazine.

Eventually, Anya had her own handbags made in Hackney after the factory in Italy started selling handbags of her own design directly to retailers. By 1992, her handbags had reached luxury stores in London, New York, Italy, France, and Japan. The next year, she opened a small retail store on Walton Street. She married James Seymour in 1996 who became her company's finance director. In 2001, she launched her unique "Be a Bag" line featuring the purchaser's photo on a bag. It became a campaign to aide a breast cancer awareness group. In 2007, the brand introduced a limited-edition tote bag featuring the words "I'm Not a Plastic Bag" to help influence ecological awareness. Vanity Fair selected the bag to be included in their Oscar's "goodie bags". After continued success, she had 51 worldwide stores by 2009 to complete a true "bags to riches" story. Celebrate her success story at an Anya Hindmarch sale.
