The ancient city of Venice is the heart of art and romance and the inspiration for the dreamlike shoe designs of Rene Caovilla. The brand has a heritage of more than 80 years and is known for shoes with exquisite handmade detailing and iconic silver soles. Celebrities spotted stepping out in the imaginative designs include Jennifer Lopez, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé.

Rene Caovilla was born into the world of shoemaking. His father Edoardo was an apprentice of Luigi Voltan, the first shoemaker in Venice's Riviera del Brenta. Edoardo fell in love with couture fashions and fine craftsmanship. His wife and four others began embroidering shoes in a small room of the Caovilla factory. His son Rene left home in 1950 to become a student of design in Paris and London. Rene returned home in the 1960s to work in the family business. He soon met his wife Paola who also came from a family of shoemakers. Paola would later become responsible for the Coavilla handbag line. The Caovillas worked with Valentino Garavani during the 1970s and with Chanel and Christian Dior in the 1980s. At the turn of the 21st century, Rene, along with Karl Lagerfeld, decided to make jeweled shoes. In September 2007, Harrods used a live cobra to guard the shoe counter where a pair of Rene's diamond, sapphire and ruby covered sandals were on display.

They don't have to be guarded by a poisonous snake, but the Caovilla Jeweled Snakeskin T-Strap Sandal in karung snakeskin with crystal embellishments sparkle with plenty of dazzle. The brand's attention to detail, varied textures, and unique cuts are seen in the Embellished Lace, Satin, And Plissé Organza Pumps. Black floral lace overlays blush satin outlined in organza ruffles.

In 2013, Rene's grandson, also named Edoardo, left the renewable energy industry to become the creative director of the family's well established and reputable shoe business. Today the look for Rene Caovilla shoes mixes craftsmanship and technology to continue the brand's signature designs.
