Born in England, Jasper Morrison was raised in both Germany and the United States before his family settled in London, where he attended Kingston College School of Art & Design and the Royal College of Art. Morrison is a self-described conceptual designer, taking familiar shapes and repurposing them into fresh ones. Believing that what you dont see is as important as what you do see, he designed and engineered Alfi (2015) to be an ordinary chair with extraordinary invisible qualities. Its seat is made from reclaimed post-industrial waste, and its base is made of responsibly harvested wood handcrafted by Amish woodworkers. Adding even more extra to its extraordinariness, Morrison shaped the seat as a nod to cane chairs seen at sidewalk cafés found throughout Paris. The result is simple and simply beautiful, and one hes pleased with: Its one of the most comfortable chairs I have designed. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Reclaimed post-industrial waste seat (92.5% polypropylene; 7.5% wood fiber); solid ash base. Measurements:H 24.25" W 17" D 18.75" Seat H 18"

Design Within Reach Bertoia Diamond Lounge Chair with Seat Pad
Design Within Reach Bertoia Diamond Lounge Chair with Seat Pad 

With his iconic seating collection, Harry Bertoia transformed industrial wire rods into a new furniture form. The events that made this work possible began a decade earlier at Cranbrook Academy of Art, when Bertoia met Florence Knoll (then Florence Schust). Years later, the Italian-born designer was invited to work for Florence and her husband, Hans Knoll. Bertoia was given the freedom to work on whatever suited him, without being held to a strict design agenda, and the result of this arrangement was the Bertoia Seating Collection (1952). Featuring a delicate filigreed appearance thats supremely strong, these airy seats are sculpted out of steel rods. In his art, Bertoia experimented with open forms and metal work, and these chairs were an extension of that work. If you look at the chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture, said Bertoia. Space passes through them. After designing his seating collection, Bertoia returned to focusing mostly on sculpture. This is the authentic Bertoia Diamond Lounge Chair produced by Knoll. The Knoll logo is stamped into its base. Chair made in Italy; seat pad made in U.S.A. In honor of Bertoias 100th birthday, Knoll has introduced a version of this classic finished in 18-karat plated gold. Design Within Reach Mantis BS5 SW Sconce 

DWR Exclusive Born in Mainz, Germany, in 1924, Bernard Schottlander fled to England as a Jewish refugee in 1939. He worked as a welder for a short stint during the war before delving into sculpture at Leeds College of Art and the Anglo-French art center in St. Johns Wood. A year later, he went on to open his own design studio and began creating new pieces in limited editions. An admirer of Alexander Calder, the American sculptor perhaps best known as originator of the mobile, Schottlander created his Mantis Collection (1951) as an homage. Movement being intrinsic to his work, he devised clever adjustable frames constructed of strong yet flexible steel rods combined with counterweights (except for the sconce, which has a fixed design). He then fabricated shades from aluminum using repoussé and chasing techniques, relying on his trained sculptors eye to produce beautifully flowing shapes that set the symmetrical and asymmetrical in opposition. His lamps – much like his idols mobiles – appear to defy gravity with their floating forms. Bulb (not included): LED, CFL or incandescent; E12 base; 40W max. This is the authentic Mantis Collection. Made in China. Materials: Painted steel arm and base; painted aluminum shade; nickeled brass ball joint. Measurements:H 8.25" D 17.75" Shade Diameter 8.75", 3.5 lbs.

DWR Exclusive The Matera Collection (2007), focused on delivering ample storage, is the work of Sean Yoo, who at the time of its conception lived in Matera, Italy (thus its name). Born in Seoul, Yoo grew up in Los Angeles and was working as a city planner when a visit to the Noguchi Museum in New York inspired him to pursue design. I was particularly attracted to the way Noguchi applied sculptural qualities to common household objects, says Yoo. It seemed to give meaning and purpose to otherwise meaningless objects. The Matera Collection features clean lines nicely finished with beveled edges, running match-wood grain and exposed-slot mortise-and-tenon corner joints. All pieces have slotted bases that lend an airy feel. The Matera Side Table has a C-shape floating design meant to accommodate the Matera Bed with Storage – placed next to the bed, the table allows free access to the drawer facing it, which passes right through its base when opened. Made in Malaysia. Materials: Solid walnut or oak case frame; walnut or oak veneer over MDF with thick solid walnut or oak edging. Measurements:H 22.5" W 20.5" D 15.5"

Born in Copenhagen in 1923, Nanna Ditzel was a groundbreaking modernist – her work spanned all areas of design. Trained as a cabinetmaker, she opened a studio with her husband Jørgen in 1946, designing furniture, ceramics, jewelry and textiles. Ditzels Hallingdal fabric, designed in 1965, has been in continuous production since, becoming one of Kvadrats best-selling products. Her Dennie Chair (1956), originally designed for Fritz Hansen, was a fixture in the Ditzel household but was never produced on a large scale. Nanna and Jørgens daughter, Dennie (the chairs namesake), approached Onecollection about bringing this comfortable and cozy – yet minimal – design back into production. Compactly scaled with an elegant splay-leg base in chromed steel, it suits a living room, den or kids room – Dennie remembers being read books as a child from this body holding lounge chair. This nearly lost midcentury classic chair is upholstered, of course, in Ditzels Hallingdal fabric. This is the authentic Dennie Chair by Onecollection. Made in Denmark. Materials: Plywood shell with Pantera foam; polyester foam top layer; chromed steel; Kvadrat Hallingdal fabric (70% wool, 30% viscose). Measurements:H 35.5" W 32.25" D 31.5" Seat H 14.5"

Design Within Reach Bertoia Side Chair
Design Within Reach Bertoia Side Chair 

This is the authentic Bertoia Chair produced by Knoll. The Knoll logo is stamped into its base. Made in Italy. The White and Black frames can be used outdoors with limited exposure to the elements. The Chrome frame is not for outdoor use. Materials: Welded steel rods; polished chrome finish with chrome connections or bonded Rilsan® finish with stainless steel connections. Measurements:H 28.75" W 21.75" D 19.75" Seat H 17.75"

Measurements:H 31.75" W 17" D 19.75" Seat H 18"

Design Within Reach Adjustable Table E1027
Design Within Reach Adjustable Table E1027 

Eileen Gray was born in Ireland in 1878, studied at the Slade School of Art in London and then moved to Paris in 1907. She worked as an interior designer until 1922, when she opened her own shop, the Galerie Jean Désert. In mid-career, Gray became an architect and designed a home on the French Riviera to enjoy with her partner, architect Jean Badovici. To celebrate their relationship, they named the house E.1027, which is a cipher for their intertwined initials: The E is for Eileen, and the numbers 10, 2 and 7 represent the alphabetical order of the letters J, B and G, respectively. The furniture she designed for their seaside retreat included the Adjustable Table E1027 (1927). Like the house, the table is cantilevered, giving it visual weightlessness and the ability to hover over anywhere youre sitting. The fact that its height adjustable makes it an ideal solution for next to a bed, chair or sofa. This table is included in the permanent collection of MoMA. This is the authentic E1027, produced by ClassiCon and authorized by the World License Holder, Aram Designs Ltd. Made in Italy. Materials: Chromed or matte black powder-coated tubular steel; .25" thick clear or grey smoked glass. Measurements:H 24"–40" Diameter 20"
