Nike was born from the desire to push the boundaries of footwear technology and design in the service of helping runners to reach their maximum potential. In the beginning there was rubber being poured into breakfast making appliances. In 2017, the Breaking2 project is tackling the sub two-hour marathon. The effort to surmount an impossible performance barrier has inspired a range of new footwear to support the Breaking2 project. One of these debutant silhouettes, a hybrid lightweight racer/durable daily trainer called the Zoom Fly, has been sent into the NikeLab, for a makeover detailing the design process behind this new generation of running footwear. Ultra-lightweight, soft and highly resilient Lunarlon foam creates a light, responsive underfoot experience, while an embedded, full-length, carbon-infused nylon plate increases stiffness. A high abrasion rubber in the heel adds durability. The shoe’s 10mm offset is designed to minimize Achilles strain, and the 33-mm stack height ensures impact protection mile after mile, while the translucent, stretch-woven upper is both light and breathable. The NikeLab version of the Zoom Fly features original concept sketches printed on the sock liner, running focused detail graphics, in the form of Nike's circa 1976 pinwheel swoosh logo, a checkerboard finish line flag and speed track icon on the tongue, and digital clock readout on the heel. Utilitarian text details on the heel and inner tongue which identify the Zoom Fly as part of the Nike fast project provide the finishing touch. If a size is not listed, it is sold out.
