By age 16, she represented the powerful Los Angeles Athletic Club swim team and had earned three national championships in both the breaststroke and freestyle. After being noticed by legendary showman Billy Rose, she as cast in the San Francisco Aquacade, a Broadway musical performed in swimsuits. After her performance, her acting career began, starring in many water- and swim-themed musicals and movies. Knowing her acting career wouldn't last forever, Williams expressed interest in business. When someone came to her with the idea of putting her name on fashion swimwear, she agreed. Licensing agreements with swimwear manufacturers led to the beginning of the Esther Williams Collection in 1988.
