tea weave. Handmade of antiqued strips of metal, this open-weave sphere is a modern interpretation of traditional Indian handicrafts. "Passing through the tea estates in Assam, I always find the cane work fascinating," says designer Neelima Rao. "The material is basic and utilitarian, yet the basketry is intricate." Such cane-woven baskets are used throughout India to gather tea and tobacco leaves, and trap fish. Inspired by those artisan works, this construction follows the same simplicity in form, reimagined as industrial sculpture. neelima rao. Working primarily in metal and semi-precious stones, designer Neelima Rao creates objects that are a modern reflection of India's rich tradition of art and craft. "The combination of the decorative Indian crafts when juxtaposed with the demands of modernity and simplicity often gives rise to unexpected and unique fusion pieces," Rao says. Based in Faridabad, New Delhi, Rao finds inspiration in every village, town and city she travels to throughout India, each of which has its own craft or tradition of personal adornment or objects.
