Design Within Reach Pfister Two-Seater Sofa
Charles Pfister was our kind of modernist. "There is a movement away from throwaway society, away from disposable possessions," said Pfister. "Instead, there is a mounting interest in useful, sculptural, wonderfully constructed objects." His Lounge Collection (1971) is both sculptural and wonderfully constructed, embodying his intent to design items that display "opulence without waste." Based in San Francisco, Pfister had a measurable effect on the world of corporate interiors in the late 20th century. Looking at his timeless namesake collection, it's easy to see why. Manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in U.S.A. The Two-Seater's clean, tailored aesthetic makes it a smart choice for many commercial or residential settings. Short, inset legs give the Two-Seater the appearance of floating slightly over the floor. Heirloom quality: The Pfister Collection features meticulous construction, timeless lines and high-quality leather upholstery. Charles Pfister was inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame in 1986. Materials: Hardwood and plywood seat and back; square steel tubing legs; fully upholstered, foam core cushions with polyester wrap; double-needle topstitched Spinneybeck® Volo leather upholstery. Design Within Reach Barcelona Couch
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Couch (1930) was added to his Barcelona Collection in the year following the introduction of the Chair and Stool. Still produced to his original specifications, the couch gained widespread popularity in 1953, when architect Philip Johnson selected it for his New York apartment. The cushions – welting and buttons included – come from a single Spinneybeck Volo cowhide and are supported by cowhide belting straps. To create the deep, precise tufting, individual panels of leather are cut, hand-welted and hand-tufted. The frame is made from African mahogany sapele hardwood, with stainless steel legs. The bolster cushion is crafted from coordinating leather and secured to the couch with straps and locking snaps. The Barcelona Couch is a registered trademark of Knoll, Inc., manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in U.S.A. Materials: African sapele hardwood frame with protective clear lacquer finish; cowhide leather straps; rubber webbing; polished stainless steel legs; Dacron®-wrapped high-resiliency urethane foam and fiberfill cushions; Spinneybeck® Volo semi-aniline leather upholstery. Measurements:H 25" W 39" D 78" Seat H 15.5"
Design Within Reach SwanTM Sofa
Before the Swan Sofa (1958), Arne Jacobsen's architecture and designs were shaped by an assumption of materials' natural ways of resisting. In other words, he could make them go only so far in becoming the structures he desired. With new technologies, however, the old rules no longer applied, and he was able to shape fluid curves and single-piece molded shells. The Swan Sofa is now made from polyurethane foam, but at the time, Jacobsen used Styropore® to create its continuous shape. Designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, for which Jacobsen was the architect. A single upholsterer hand-sews the fabric onto the frame of Swan. Original design and licensed manufacture by Republic of Fritz Hansen. Made in Poland. Materials: Fiberglass-reinforced, polyurethane foam shell; injection-molded aluminum base; full-grain leather or fabric upholstery. Fame: Fame® by Gabriel fabric (95% wool, 5% polyamide). Milani: Milani fabric (70% viscose, 30% linen). Tonus: Maharam Tonus by Kvadrat® fabric (90% wool, 10% Helanca®). Classic: Full-grain leather top-coated for durability. Elegance: Full-grain aniline-dyed leather with light structure and light impregnation; patinas over time with natural markings. Optical: Full-grain leather top-coated and light protective finish. Measurements:H 31" W 56.75" D 29" Seat H 15.75"
Design Within Reach Goodland Two-Seater Sofa
DWR Exclusive Milo Baughman believed that good design is enduring design, and his Goodland Sofa Collection (1968) beautifully demonstrates this idea. Named for the Kansas town where he was born, Goodland reflects the style and ease for which Baughman is known. This collection began as a sofa designed for his own home – his daughter still has the original – which he later expanded upon and launched for retail customers. Goodland pieces are elegantly proportioned with comfortable cushions that have just the right give and thin arms that help maximize the seating area. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Kiln-dried solid maple frame; matrix webbing suspension; foam seat cushions wrapped in poly-blend down; back cushions filled with trillium fibers from recycled ; polished stainless steel, walnut or oxidized bronze-plated steel base; fabric or leather upholstery. Design Within Reach Vesper King Sleeper Sofa
DWR Exclusive The team of Jeffrey Bernett and Nicholas Dodziuk is known for creating amazing sofas and beds, which is why we're excited to introduce a collection that combines both. The Vesper Sleeper Sofa (2014) delivers the wide, deep, comfortable seating expected in a sofa, plus an easy-to-fold-out bed that's as comfortable and large as your regular mattress. Fitted with a patented conversion mechanism, the Vesper mattress rests entirely on a wooden platform, which means you won't feel the sturdy crossbar underneath. When opened, Vesper takes up less space – nearly a foot less in depth – than conventional sleepers but still gives you a standard-size sleeping surface. The Vesper King Sleeper Sofa must ship with our White Glove delivery service. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Kiln-dried hardwood frame; 4"-thick high-density foam mattress; high-resiliency foam cushions with Dacron® wrap; down-filled bolsters; fabric or leather upholstery. Measurements:H 34" W 92" D 40" (86" when opened) Seat H 19"
Design Within Reach Raleigh Sofa
DWR Exclusive Raleigh (2009) is a comfortable collection that draws from midcentury Danish design. It features an exposed solid wood frame that wraps around the back to support the seating area while lending visual lightness and satisfying tension to the whole. Unlike other exposed-frame collections that force overly upright sitting positions, Raleigh is designed with a carefully canted seatback for a more natural way of situating yourself as you relax and unwind. We chose to work with Jeffrey Bernett and Nicholas Dodziuk on this project because of the importance they place on people – how they move, interact, live and, most of all, sit. The Raleigh Collection was named Best of Year by Interior Design in 2010, winning the magazine's top honor for the residential lounge category. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Kiln-dried, corner-blocked hardwood frame; unidirectional web suspension; high-density, high-resiliency polyurethane foam seat cushions with Dacron® wrap; Poly-fil®-, feather- and down-blend back cushions; solid walnut external frame; fabric or leather upholstery.
Design Within Reach Bolster Two-Seater Sofa
Craig Bassam is an architect and designer whose career started with Bruce Eeles, a disciple of Marcel Breuer. His partner, Scott Fellows, is a Harvard MBA who transformed the Swiss firm Bally. Together they are BassamFellows, described as "the design world's A-team" by The Times of London . In 2010, they started collaborating with the Michigan-based company Herman Miller to develop refined seating that complements the classic works by Eames, Nelson and Noguchi. Taking its name from the shape of its horizontal pillows, Bolster provides supportive upright sitting as well as plush comfort for those times when you want to stretch out and relax. Made in U.S.A. Design Within Reach Eames Sofa Compact
The inspiration for the Eames Sofa Compact (1954) derived from a built-in sofa Charles and Ray Eames designed in the late 1940s for their home in Pacific Palisades, California. They liked that sofa so much they decided to develop a freestanding version built on an airy pedestal of chromed-steel legs. With modern lines and a trim profile, this sofa not only fits comfortably in small spaces but also holds its own in large rooms, making it a versatile choice for home or office with ample seating for three people. Its plush foam cushions are supported by resilient webbing that provides firm but flexible all-around comfort on par with the best of traditional sofas. This original is an authentic Eames product by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Chromed steel frame; polyurethane foam cushions; fabric-reinforced rubber webbing; 100% polyester crepe upholstery; stainless steel glides. Measurements:H 35" W 72.5" D 30" Seat H 16"
Design Within Reach Eames Two-Seat Sofa
The Eameses designed their Eames Sofa (1967) to complement their Soft Pad Collection, showing off a harmonious blend of wood, leather and polished aluminum. It stands as a graceful reminder of the honest genius of Eames designs, equally fitting for home or office, with carefully considered details. The frame and back panels are constructed of rich solid wood and hand-finished with gunstock oil. Legs and arm supports are made of die-cast aluminum polished to a bright finish. And plush foam cushions come upholstered in leather, with undersides covered in nylon for good ventilation, supported by resilient webbing for added comfort. The Eames Sofa was the last piece of furniture produced by the Eames Office and was completed after Charles Eames died in 1978. It's been in continuous production since 1984. This is an authentic Eames product by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Solid walnut or solid teak frame and back; die-cast polished aluminum legs and arm supports; polyurethane foam cushions; fabric-reinforced rubber webbing; leather upholstery; stainless steel glides. Design Within Reach BassamFellows Daybed
This Daybed (2004) was designed "to be seen in the round," says Craig Bassam, by which he means that it can be seen and used from all sides. Such an approach isn't surprising from a design team living in a glass house where furniture is visible from every angle, whether you're inside or out. The house is the work of Philip Johnson, the architect who designed the Glass House for his own private residence in New Canaan, Connecticut. To see how seamlessly this Daybed (and all the furniture BassamFellows has created) works in a space designed by the iconic Johnson makes it very clear that these are the next icons – destined to become highly collectible. Bassam is an architect whose career started with Bruce Eeles, a disciple of Marcel Breuer. His partner, Scott Fellows, is a Harvard MBA who transformed the Swiss firm Bally. Together they are BassamFellows, described as "the design world's A-team" by The Times of London . This fully handcrafted Daybed is made of solid American black walnut that is sustainably and locally harvested. The leather cushions are hand-stitched with inverted seams; the backrest adjusts to three positions. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Solid American black walnut; oxidized brass adjustable back support; dense foam core cushions with down topping; Elmo Elmotique aniline leather upholstery. Measurements:H 11.75" W 76.5" D 33"
