For his simple and innovative lighting, Jason Miller draws on everyday aspects of American culture, transforming them into something surprising and beautiful. For his Modo Chandelier (2009), Miller was inspired by off-the-shelf industrial parts like those found on Canal Street, not far from his Brooklyn studio. We have re-engineered inexpensive parts that are made by the thousands in China or India, says Miller about the pieces manufacturing. Modos parts are made by high-end machine shops here in America that typically work for the airline industry. While the inspiration is a bit banal, it is now a very sophisticated product. The chandeliers components are painstakingly engineered and custom CNC-milled from solid aluminum. This version has a three-sided frame that holds 10 glass globes, and it includes a three-foot stem that can be cut upon installation to the desired length. Bulb (included): incandescent half-silver globe 25W/G25/E26. UL and CUL Listed. Made in U.S.A. The Modo Collection features hand-blown glass globes with slight variances in shape and color, which make each piece unique. Materials: Machined aluminum; aluminum tubing; black or bronze finish with smoked glass globes or polished nickel finish with cream glass globes. Measurements:H 20" W 36" D 41", 15 lbs.
Defined by its dependable bentwood construction and simple form, the Era Chair (1859) has been in continuous production for more than 150 years. By making the back of the chair and rear legs from a single piece of curved wood, designer Michael Thonet – who perfected the bentwood process for chair-making – eliminated the need for expensive and time-consuming hand-carved joints. The resulting chair is graceful, lightweight and surprisingly strong – the latter of which has been continually proven in cafes and restaurants all over the globe. Made in the Czech Republic by a company that has been in continuous operation for more than a century. This contract-quality chair is suitable for commercial and residential use. As with any natural material, slight variations in the texture and color of the wood are to be expected and are not defects. Materials: Solid beech wood from FSC-certified sources; beech plywood seat; natural beech, water-based stain and varnish, or lacquer finish; nylon floor glides. Measurements:H 37.5" W 16" D 20" Seat H 24"
DWR Exclusive Jan Plechč and Henry Wielgus met during their studies at The Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, where they first began to collaborate. In 2011, they founded their own design studio, Jan Plechč & Henry Wielgus, with the goal of transcending barriers between architecture, art and design. Currently, the duo is commissioned for internationally renowned galleries and brands around the globe. Their Neverending Glory Collection (2013) was inspired by chandeliers from five of the worlds most eminent opera houses. If you imagine the grand, original chandeliers in these opera houses, theyre glorious, elucidates Plechč, and the neverending part relates to the profiles and the idea of infinite rotation – a neverending glory. This one honors the Palais Garnier in Paris. Bulb (not included): LED, CFL or incandescent; E26 base; 40W max. UL Listed. Made in the Czech Republic. Materials: Hand-blown glass. Saving a factory and helping the employees keep their jobs was not something Peter Bowles thought hed be doing when he designed his first bone china light. The story begins in Stoke-on-Trent, the heart of the British ceramics industry, where its prized porcelain has been produced for more than three centuries. Bowles convinced a tableware factory to produce his first design, but as the orders started to come in, he learned the factory would be closing. Rather than moving production overseas, Bowles bought the factory and offered the entire staff new jobs with his company, Original BTC. The Drop 1 Pendant (2000) is beautifully crafted of hand-cast bone china. Creating these lights involves a highly skilled, labor-intensive process that begins with raw clay and ends with biscuit firing, glazing, glossing and firing again. When lit, the shade has a translucent glow that allows for warm diffused light. Attention to detail is at the heart of every Drop 1 Pendant, right down to the braided cord, which was designed by Peter and can be found on every light his company makes. Drop is UL Listed and suitable for contract use. Bulbs (not included): 40W/120V/E26. Made in England. Materials: Natural bone china shade and ceiling rose; braided cotton covered cord. Measurements:11 Pendants: H 9.5" W 6" D 6" Cord L 59" each, 22 lbs. total
Hugely dramatic, light as a feather and distinctly Dutch, the Random Light (2002) by Bertjan Pot began as a modernist craft project of sorts. After making failed attempts at knitting fiberglass as a means of creating structure, Pot resorted to coiling a strand of epoxy-dipped fiberglass around a large balloon in varying patterns. Once the form had completely dried, the balloon was popped, leaving behind a dramatic globe-shaped form that serves as the diffuser for this stunningly airy pendant lamp. Random Light is suitable for entryways, lounge areas and dining rooms, with a light bulb visible at the center of the globe when lit, creating an all-over glow with minimal glare. Bulb (not included): incandescent 60W/A19/E26. UL Listed. Made in the Netherlands. This pendant is not precisely spherical, featuring denser fiberglass on the end opposite the bulb access opening. We recommend mounting it no more than 4" from the opening to ensure it emits the most symmetrical lighting pattern. White and black versions each include a chrome socket, chrome canopy and black cord. Materials: Epoxy-coated fiberglass diffuser; chrome socket and canopy. Measurements:Small: Diameter 19.75", 2.6 lbs.
Architect George Nelson, who was Herman Millers design director from 1945 to 1972, once said, Every truly original idea seems to find its most important expression in a chair. And then he blew the doors off lighting design. While outfitting his office, Nelson discovered a silk-covered Swedish hanging lamp that he coveted but found too expensive. He then recalled seeing a photo in the paper of Liberty ships being mothballed by having the decks covered with netting and then being sprayed with a self-webbing plastic, which got him thinking. And then, Whammo! Inspiration struck, and by the next night, Nelson had designed his first Bubble Lamp® (1952) by spinning a skeleton of steel wires on a turntable and shooting it with translucent plastic until it was covered in a smooth, washable film. When you put a light in it, it glowed. This is the authentic Bubble Lamp, produced in partnership with the George Nelson Foundation. Bulb (not included): LED, CFL or incandescent; E26 base; 150W max. UL Listed. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Plastic polymer; steel frame. Measurements:H 14" Diameter 21" Cord L 6', 5 lbs.
Architects Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup were students at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts when they co-designed their first lamp. Craving pure, crisp geometric shapes in a design world dominated by soft organic forms, they created the Semi Pendant (1968) by placing two circles back to back, producing an elegant shape in the negative space between with a diameter matching that of each circle. Timeless by design, it just has that simplicity of form, which cannot be slotted into any single style period, says Bonderup. Its not surprising that Semi took first prize in the School of Architectures 1968 design competition with its satisfying, perfectly balanced proportions. Bulb (not included): half-mirror incandescent, E12 base, 40W max for small lamp; half-mirror incandescent, E26 base, 60W max for others. UL Listed. Made in Denmark. Ceiling rose is matte black for all pendants except matte white pendant; ceiling rose for matte white pendant is matte white. Materials: Powder-coated aluminum; fabric-covered cord. Measurements:Small: H 6" Diameter 11.75", 1 lb. Medium: H 9.25" Diameter 18.5", 1.9 lbs. Large: H 12" Diameter 23.75", 2.8 lbs.
Sculptor and designer Sebastian Wrong demonstrates his flair for bold, minimalist forms in his Spun Lamp (2001) for Flos. This lamp features satin-smooth machined aluminum construction available in high-gloss finishes for maximum dramatic impact. The fluid pedestal base stabilizes the design, and the full-range on-cord dimmer provides infinitely variable light. Bulb (included): incandescent 240W/A21/E26 or comparable CFL/LED. Made in Italy. Materials: High-gloss painted or polished aluminum. Measurements:H 69" Diameter 20" Cord L 84"
An inventor and an idealist, Dutch designer Raimond Puts is fondly remembered as the man who brought the starry sky into our homes. He had a lifelong obsession with the pure beauty of mathematics, but it wasnt until he was fooling around with a football one day that he became particularly interested in how round shapes can be formed by triangles. That fascination led to the Raimond Pendant (2007), a sphere of perfect triangles formed by intricate spheres and punctuated by tiny LED lights. The stainless steel structure safely transports the electrical current to the transparent bulbs, specially designed to spread warm white light in all directions. This is a dimmable light you can lose yourself in, much like a clear night sky covered in stars. Bulbs (included): 92 LEDs in the small Raimond, 162 in the medium and 252 in the large. For indoor use only. UL listed. Made in the Netherlands. Materials: Type 304 stainless steel; shatter-resistant PMMA LEDs; white steel ceiling canopy; clear cord. Measurements:Small: Diameter 20.5" Cord L 13', 3.3 lbs. Medium: Diameter 28.5" Cord L 13', 4.4 lbs. Large: Diameter 40.5" Cord L 13' 5.5 lbs. Cord can be shortened to a minimum of 12".
