Design Within Reach Multitone Rug
Material research primarily determines all of Jongerius designs. Her vast portfolio includes single pieces exhibited at galleries, mass-produced products sold at retail stores, design of airliner interiors and even the redesign of the North Delegates Lounge at the UN Headquarters in New York. Jongerius was just beginning her career when she was approached by Maharam and invited to work on a project for their 100th anniversary. Maharam now produces 29 different Jongerius textiles, many of which are in the permanent collections at the Art Institute Chicago, Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum and MoMA. In addition to conceiving textiles for Maharam, Jongerius creates innovative works for clients of her own company, Jongeriuslab, and serves as the design director at Danskina, a Kvadrat Maharam company for which she dreams up rugs. She has a very clear idea of what makes a rug: There are three components that have to make music together: interesting yarns, great construction and the right technique to give the pattern dazzling oxygen. Starting life as a color test swatch for another one of her rugs, Jongerius Multitone Rug (2014) demonstrates her genius eye for color. When asked why her colors look so beautiful together, she replies, That is the secret of the color-cooking chef. The rich texture of Multitone comes from its flat handwoven basket construction, which she calls the archetype of weaving. Made in India. Materials: 100% wool. Design Within Reach Chilewich Mat
After co-founding the successful HUE hosiery company with Kathy Moskal, our friend Sandy Chilewich experimented with different fibers until she stumbled upon woven vinyl, which would become her signature textile. Combining the visual interest of traditional floor coverings with the durability of her proprietary Plynyl®, the Chilewich Mat (2003) is soft, washable and stain-resistant, impervious to spills and suitable to virtually any space, from high-traffic environments to bedside. The latex backing includes post-industrial content, prevents skidding and curling, and adds cushioning. Chilewich flooring was the winner of the 2007 Material ConneXion Medium Award for textile design, and it meets the stringent requirements of the Carpet and Rug Institute's Green Label Plus program's standards for VOC emissions. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Woven vinyl with latex backing. Measurements:Small: L 6' W 3'10" Pile 0.125" Large: L 9' W 6' Pile 0.125"
Design Within Reach Rangoli
Renowned for playful forays in color and texture, rug designer Nani Marquina takes a bold, circular approach with her Rangoli Rug (2008). Rangoli takes its name and inspiration from classic Hindu mosaics. A popular art in India, its a form of sand-painting that uses finely ground white powder. In this interpretation, the round pattern is hand-tufted in graphic black and white wool, beginning in the center and emanating outward. Its dynamic pattern is portrayed in neutral colors, ideal for placement in front of a sectional sofa, under a round dining room table or in an entry room. Marquina had a career as a textile designer before switching to rug design and creating her own company in 1986. In 2005, she was honored with the National Design Award, one of the highest honors granted to designers by the Ministry of Industry in Spain. Together with the nonprofit Care & Fair, Nani Marquina is fighting against illegal child labor in the manufacturing of carpets. Materials: 100% New Zealand wool. Measurements:Diameter 8'2" Pile 0.75"
Design Within Reach Stippen Rug
DWR Exclusive Dutch designer Renske Papavoine graduated from the industrial design department at Design Academy Eindhoven in 2003, then promptly moved to Barcelona to work for a design studio. While in Spain, she presented an idea to rug designer Nani Marquina, who agreed to produce one of Papavoines first commercial products. In 2007, Papavoine returned to her native Holland, but she continued to collaborate with Marquina, who produced her Stippen Rug for DWR. Meaning points in Dutch, Stippen (2012) is an arrangement of dots in three colors on a uniform background. A master colorist, Papavoine knows that the juxtaposition of hues will influence how they are perceived, adding to the intriguing richness of this cleverly subtle rug.
