Design Within Reach Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, Tall
Charles and Ray Eames had ideas about making a better world, one in which things were designed to bring greater pleasure to our lives. Their iconic Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman (1956) began with a desire to create a chair with the warm, receptive look of a well-used first basemans mitt. The result has become the consummate lounge set. In continuous production since its introduction, this set is widely considered one of the most significant designs of the 20th century. Combining soft, inviting leather with the sleek form of molded wood, the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman is the culmination of the Eameses efforts to create a club chair using the molded plywood technology they pioneered in the 40s. Even today, each piece is assembled by hand to ensure the highest level of quality and craftsmanship, and youll be pleased to discover that this set gets even better with use and age. The configuration of this set is a registered trademark, and this is the authentic Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. Herman Miller and the Eames Office, which continues to be run by the Eames family, developed this taller size in response to the fact that the average height of people worldwide has increased about an inch since this chair was designed. The differences between the two sizes are subtle to the eye, but for taller individuals, they make the difference between I love Eames and Eames loves me. Materials: Seven-ply santos palisander, walnut, white ash or ebony-stained ash veneer; molded plywood frames; die-cast aluminum bases and back braces; swivel base on chair; stainless steel leveling floor glides; polyurethane foam cushions; Edelman® All-Grain, Herman Miller® (MCL) or Spinneybeck® Vicenza leather upholstery. Design Within Reach Era Chair
Defined by its dependable bentwood construction and simple form, the Era Chair (1859) has been in continuous production for more than 150 years. By making the back of the chair and rear legs from a single piece of curved wood, designer Michael Thonet – who perfected the bentwood process for chair-making – eliminated the need for expensive and time-consuming hand-carved joints. The resulting chair is graceful, lightweight and surprisingly strong, the latter of which has been continually proven in cafés and restaurants all over the globe. Swiss architect Le Corbusier used the Era Chair in his buildings, stating, This chair, whose millions of representatives are used on the Continent and in the two Americas, possesses nobility. Other fans of this iconic form included Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, both of whom featured this chair in their paintings. As with any natural material, slight variations in the texture and color of the wood are to be expected and are not defects. Made in the Czech Republic. This contract-quality chair is suitable for commercial and residential use. Materials: Solid beech wood from FSC-certified sources; beech plywood seat; natural beech, water-based stain and varnish, or lacquer finish; nylon floor glides. Design Within Reach Theatre Ottoman
DWR Exclusive As a theater and dance student at the University of West Virginia, Ted Boerner developed an intuitive sense of the body and the space it occupies – an awareness that now lends his furniture its genial angles and careful proportions. He attended NYU for grad school, and began his career as a set and costume designer. Propping scenes and imagining the things that characters would surround themselves with made me think about how important furniture is to people, says the designer. Modern sofas often claim minimalist appeal, but few can also tout the comfort of the Theatre Collection (2001). Designed to accommodate the human body with studied proportions and simple geometry, Theatres comfort stems from its form rather than excessive layers of stuffing. A gleaming chromed steel base runs the entire depth of the design, and welted seams lend strength and definition to the upholstery. Ships with legs unattached to save on packing materials. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Kiln-dried, corner-blocked hardwood frame; unidirectional web suspension; high-density, high-resiliency polyurethane foam cushion with Dacron® wrap; chrome-plated steel base; fabric or leather upholstery. Design Within Reach Bertoia Bird Ottoman with Full Cover in Classic Boucl
With his iconic seating collection, Harry Bertoia transformed industrial wire rods into a new furniture form. The events that made this work possible began a decade earlier at Cranbrook Academy of Art, when Bertoia met Florence Knoll (then Florence Schust). Years later, the Italian-born designer was invited to work for Florence and her husband, Hans Knoll. Bertoia was given the freedom to work on whatever suited him, without being held to a strict design agenda, and the result of this arrangement was the Bertoia Seating Collection (1952). Featuring a delicate filigreed appearance thats supremely strong, these airy seats are sculpted out of steel rods. In his art, Bertoia experimented with open forms and metal work, and these chairs were an extension of that work. If you look at the chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture, said Bertoia. Space passes through them. After designing his seating collection, Bertoia returned to focusing mostly on sculpture. This is the authentic Bertoia Bird Ottoman produced by Knoll. The Knoll logo is stamped into its base. Made in Italy. The White and Black frames can be used outdoors with limited exposure to the elements. The Chrome frame is not for outdoor use. The Classic Bouclé cover is not for outdoor use. Materials: Welded steel rods; polished chrome finish with chrome connections or bonded Rilsan® finish with stainless steel connections. Design Within Reach Colonial Footstool
Impossibly thin Danish oiled oak combines with handwoven cane and luxurious aniline leather in the Colonial Chair and Footstool (1949) – Ole Wanschers most famous and enduring design. Defying gravity through masterful construction, with a compelling material contrast, its name honors the Danish designers fascination with English furnishings from the 1700s. A slightly more conservative strand of Danish modern than we see from masters like Finn Juhl and Hans Wegner, Wanschers work reflects his scholarly nature: He served as professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture (his alma mater) from 1955 to 1973. Designed in 1949, the Colonial wasnt put into production until the mid-1950s, when Wanscher stumbled on a collaboration with PJ Furniture through Mobilia magazine editor, Gunnar Bratvold. (Carl Hansen & Son acquired the right to produce the Colonial Chair and Footstool in 2012.) Wanscher gained a good deal of notoriety in Denmark in the 50s and 60s. In 1958, the Danish newspaper Politiken declared, Owning a Wanscher chair is an adventure every day, and will be so even several hundred years from now, for this is how long it lasts. Made in Denmark. Materials: Danish oiled oak; handwoven cane; full-grain, pure aniline, naked leather; polydown cushion filling (50% down, 50% foam). Measurements:H 18.25" W 23.75" D 15.75"

Design Within Reach WombTM Ottoman
The expressive sculptural forms of Eero Saarinens furniture can also be found in his architecture, from the TWA Terminal at Kennedy Airport to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis to Dulles International Airport. In 1940, the Finnish American and his friend Charles Eames took first prize at the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at MoMA. Later that decade, when Florence Knoll challenged Saarinen to create a chair that she could curl up in, she had found the right candidate for the task. The Womb Ottoman (1946) has an enveloping form that continues to be one of the most iconic and recognized representations of midcentury organic modernism. By applying foam molded over a fiberglass shell, Saarinen created a single-piece form that perfectly facilitates a relaxed sitting posture.
