Design Within Reach Barcelona Couch
Ludwig Mies van der Rohes Barcelona Couch (1930) was added to his Barcelona Collection in the year following the introduction of the Chair and Stool. Still produced to his original specifications, the couch gained widespread popularity in 1953, when architect Philip Johnson selected it for his New York apartment. The cushions – welting and buttons included – come from a single Spinneybeck Volo cowhide and are supported by cowhide belting straps. To create the deep, precise tufting, individual panels of leather are cut, hand-welted and hand-tufted. The frame is made from African mahogany sapele hardwood, with stainless steel legs. The bolster cushion is crafted from coordinating leather and secured to the couch with straps and locking snaps. The Barcelona Couch is a registered trademark of Knoll, Inc., manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in U.S.A. Materials: African sapele hardwood frame with protective clear lacquer finish; cowhide leather straps; rubber webbing; polished stainless steel legs; Dacron®-wrapped high-resiliency urethane foam and fiberfill cushions; Spinneybeck® Volo semi-aniline leather upholstery. Design Within Reach Womb Settee
The expressive sculptural forms of Eero Saarinens furniture can still be found to this very day in his architecture, from the TWA Terminal at Kennedy Airport to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis to Dulles International Airport. In 1940, the Finnish American and his friend Charles Eames took first prize at the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at MoMA. Later that decade, Saarinen developed his fit-for-two Womb Settee (1948) for his first big architectural commission, the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan – a massive 25-building complex that required furnishings for over 5,000 people. By applying foam molded over a fiberglass shell, Saarinen created a single-piece form that perfectly facilitates a relaxed sitting posture. Of the clumsy oversized models seen elsewhere that Settee was designed to replace, Saarinen said, These dreadnoughts disappeared from modern interiors partly because they were designed for an era that tried to impress by sheer mass, but he saw the robust forms as timeless. The need for such chairs has not passed. Today, more than ever, we need to relax. This is the authentic Womb Settee by Knoll. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Steel rod frame with black powder-coated finish; reinforced fiberglass shell; plywood platform; polyester fiber padding with foam core; stainless steel and nylon glides. With modern lines and a trim profile, this sofa not only fits comfortably in small spaces but also holds its own in large rooms, making it a versatile choice for home or office with ample seating for three people. Its plush foam cushions are supported by resilient webbing that provides firm but flexible all-around comfort on par with the best of traditional sofas. This original is an authentic Eames product by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Chromed steel frame; polyurethane foam cushions; fabric-reinforced rubber webbing; 100% polyester crepe upholstery; stainless steel glides. Measurements:H 35" W 72.5" D 30" Seat H 16"

Design Within Reach NelsonTM Daybed
DWR Exclusive For George Nelson, design wasn’t about things; it was about identifying problems and providing sensible solutions. The art of reduction was one of the many areas in which Nelson excelled, and he always challenged himself “to do much more with much less.” That approach led to the simple yet sleek design of the Nelson Daybed (1950), which he originally designed for his own home in 1941. For nearly a decade, he continued to streamline the daybed, and when he was finally satisfied, it became part of the Herman Miller collection in 1950. The next chapter for this timeless piece begins with you. Made in Malaysia. Materials: Solid walnut or white ash frame; solid walnut or white ash legs or stainless steel hairpin legs with satin chrome finish; steel springs; high-density foam cushion. Measurements:H 15.25" W 75" D 33"
