Design Within Reach Tokyo Outdoor Chaise Lounge
Although best known for her elegant modernist tubular steel furniture of the 1920s and 1930s, Charlotte Perriand also experimented with materials and produced craft-based designs during the three decades spent collaborating with Le Corbusier Group. In 1940, while living and working in Japan, Perriand conceived of the Outdoor Tokyo Chaise, a reinterpretation of Le Corbusier's LC4 Chaise Longue – but it was never produced. That is, until now. In 2012, more than 60 years later, Tokyo was put into production for the first time. Available in bamboo or teak, Tokyo is a fanciful combination of nature and the rational aesthetic of the International Style. Sitting atop a solid-wood base, its seat is composed of 12 curved wooden strips, which are connected to the curved bars below using satin brass studs. The seat pad and headrest are covered in water-draining, UV-resistant Sunbrella® fabric. Each piece is signed and numbered and, as a product of Cassina's Masters Collection, is manufactured by Cassina under exclusive worldwide license from the Le Corbusier Foundation. Made in Italy. A protective, water-repellant cover is included. Materials: Bamboo or teak frame; stainless-steel buckle; satin brass studs; Sunbrella Plein Air fabric. Measurements:H 25.5" W 59" D 25.75"
Design Within Reach Quovis Standing-Height Table
DWR Exclusive For more than 30 years, Giulio Lazzotti has maintained a diverse practice encompassing architecture, interior design and furniture design. He received the Torre Guinigi prize for his design for the historical center of Pietrasanta, Italy, and he is internationally recognized for his work in marble – so much so that he often teaches at the Academy of Art in Carrara, Italy (home to the famous white Carrara marble quarries). When he designed our Quovis Collection, developed with an Italian restaurant equipment manufacturer, he set the standard for quality stainless steel utility furniture. The Quovis Standing-Height Table (2001) is a comfortable height for working standing up or sitting on a barstool. The table is designed with a sound-dampening solid substrate to prevent the rattling and clanging of lesser-quality steel tables. These generously proportioned pieces are easy to clean and maintain, will not rust and are constructed to endure years of use. Able to withstand the corrosive action of various food and chemical acids, they suit a high-traffic café or kitchen, darkroom or workspace. The Standing-Height Table is equipped with lockable casters. Assembly required. Made in Italy. Materials: Stainless steel; lockable casters. Measurements:H 40.5" W 71" D 27.5"
Design Within Reach Grid Coffee Table
DWR Exclusive Henrik Pedersen began his career as a fashion designer but expanded into graphic design and product development after founding 365°, his Denmark-based design studio. “Once you have been educated in design of any form, it’s quite easy to make the change,” Pedersen explains. “The creative mindset is the same; you just have to change your mental toolbox.” And speaking of flexibility, his Grid Collection (2014) consists of several modular units that can be combined or rearranged to meet changing needs. This is a collection designed to provide the equivalent of indoor comfort outdoors, meticulously crafted to withstand the elements and look great for years to come. It sports aluminum frames pretreated with chrome and electrostatically powder-coated for superior corrosion resistance, hand-finished solid teak tabletops and cushions fashioned from the same comfortable foam used for indoor sofas but constructed to keep out moisture. Made in Indonesia. Materials: Powder-coated aluminum frame; solid teak tabletop. Measurements:H 12" W 40.5" D 40.5"
Design Within Reach Lisboa Armchair
DWR Exclusive Barcelona native Joan Gaspar began his career as a lighting designer, but it wasn't long before he was also working on furniture, interiors and even faucet systems. In 2002, the book Spoon – an overview of contemporary design published by Phaidon Press – listed him as one of the best new industrial designers, and for the last decade he has lectured at the Eina School of Design and Art in Barcelona. Always looking for traditional items that can be improved, Gaspar was inspired by the school's industrial steel chairs, which led to the colorful, fun Lisboa (2009). Lightweight, UV-protected and stackable up to seven high, this chair serves well indoors and out. BIFMA approved and suitable for commercial use. Made in Spain. Materials: Polypropylene; fiberglass. Measurements:H 32.25" W 23.75" D 20.5" Seat H 18.25" Arm H 27.5"
Design Within Reach Sol y Luna Armless Lounge Chair
DWR Exclusive Sol y Luna (1954) is an adaptation of Dan Johnson's Gazelle Collection, which was originally offered in wood or bronze, both with woven caning for the seat and back. However, due to the high cost of production and the intense hand labor involved, fewer than 150 pieces from the Gazelle line were ever produced. Now made in durable cast aluminum by outdoor manufacturer Brown Jordan, the design maintains Johnson's comfortable organic form. These pieces are shaped with the body in mind. The Lounge Chair back wraps around you, and the seats are comfortably sloped for support in a relaxed position. Seat Pad sold separately. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Made in Mexico. Materials: Cast aluminum with powder-coated finish. SEAT PAD, 100% solution-dyed acrylic Suncloth® fabric. Measurements:H 27'' W 24" D 28'' Seat H 14"
Design Within Reach 1966 Collection Ottoman
Craving furniture that could stand up to the salty environment of her seaside home in Florida, Florence Knoll called on Richard Schultz to create "a decent set of outdoor furniture made out of materials that won't rust or corrode." That was in 1962, and Schultz spent the next four years designing his refined 1966 Collection, originally known as the Knoll Leisure Collection. At a time when most outdoor furniture was stamped out of metal with backrests shaped like bouquets of flowers, the 1966 Collection brought the clean lines and balanced proportions of indoor modern furniture to outdoor living. In the years since its debut, the collection has been re-engineered to take advantage of modern materials like Teflon® thread. In creating the 1966 Collection, Schultz satisfied Florence Knoll's request for outdoor furniture that lasts, and many of the sets purchased 50 years ago are still being enjoyed today. The 1966 Collection is included in the permanent collection at MoMA. This is the authentic 1966 Ottoman by Knoll. Made in U.S.A. Fitted cover sold separately. Materials: Cast and extruded aluminum frame; weather-resistant polyester powder-coated finish; woven vinyl-coated polyester mesh; pure vinyl straps; Teflon thread; stainless steel supports and connectors; clear plastic floor glides. Measurements:H 14" W 23" D 27"
Design Within Reach Maya Lin StonesTM Coffee Table
“At the heart of this furniture collection for Knoll is my love for the land, which can be traced back to my childhood in the rolling hills of southeastern Ohio,” says designer Maya Lin. “It goes back to a childhood fascination we all have – that moment when you discover that the Earth is round, and you walk around trying to see that curve.” Her Stones Collection (1998) includes an elliptical Table with a slightly convex top. Lin came to international prominence with her award-winning design for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., which she designed as an undergraduate at Yale University. Made in U.S.A. Fully finished and enclosed on top, bottom and sides. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use. In 1998, Stones received the Best of NeoCon® Silver Award, and the Good Design® Award by the Chicago Athenaeum. Materials: Molded polyethylene with 100% recycled content.
