Design Within Reach Lampe Gras Model 215L Floor Lamp
DWR Exclusive Son of a draftsman and a homemaker, Bernard-Albin Gras was born in Saint-Raphaël, France, in 1886. He would become an engineer and tireless inventor who registered dozens of patents, including one for Lampe Gras (1921). A product of Gras' passion to improve working conditions for hundreds of laborers in ordinary machine shops, research laboratories and design studios in the 1920s, this mobile lighting solution is capable of meeting the needs of many different users. The architect Le Corbusier seized upon the design, which satisfied the demands of his ideology about the perfect object-tool: a form reduced to its pure function, free of superfluous ornament. Corbu furnished his design offices and architectural projects with Lampes Gras, and other early adopters included Eileen Gray, Man Ray and Robert Mallet-Stevens. The cast steel frames are made without screws or welded joints; all parts contribute to utmost effectiveness of the whole. Bulb (not included): LED, CFL or incandescent; E12 base; 40W max. Made in China. Materials: Cast steel body; chrome finish or matte black or white powder-coated finish; Bakelite sphere motion component. Measurements:H 47.25"–69.75" Shade Diameter 8.25" Cord L 120"
Design Within Reach Grasshopper Floor Lamp
Swedish architect and designer Greta Magnusson Grossman broke through gender barriers to embark on a prolific career. In 1940, she and her husband immigrated to the United States, where her approach to Swedish modernism struck a chord with single, professional women who felt that she understood their needs and sensibilities. She opened a store on Rodeo Drive, where her furniture and accessories quickly drew the attention of clients such as Greta Garbo, Joan Fontaine and Gracie Allen. In the 1950s, she founded her architecture office and designed 14 homes – 13 in California and one in Sweden – each one a showcase for her quietly dramatic approach. The Grasshopper Lamp (1948) has a lithe frame and an elongated conical shade that rotates to direct light where needed. This is an authentic Grossman lamp, produced to the designer's original specifications. Bulb (not included): incandescent 40W/E12 or comparable CFL. Made in Denmark. Materials: Powder-coated steel frame and shade; solid brass hardware; fabric-covered cord. Measurements:H 49.25" W 15" D 17.25"
Design Within Reach Brazo Floor Lamp
Made from LEDs and recyclable aluminum, Pablo Pardo's innovative Brazo Floor Lamp (2006) uses the same body as his Brazo Table Lamp, but with an extension piece for added height. The first LED light to feature an optical film lens for focus control, Brazo provides both a variable beam spread and focused directional light. In the shape of an inverted "L," Brazo's top arm lets you turn an outer aluminum layer over the white LEDs to focus the light as much or as little as is desired. This energy-efficient lighting solution is 97% recyclable. Made in China. The top piece freely rotates and also tilts up to 90 degrees. Height adjustable with a dimmer knob. Uses 18 high-output LEDs, which have an estimated life of 20 years with normal use. The simple, svelte Brazo won the 2007 Best of Competition Award at the Neocon Contract Furniture Exposition – a first for a lighting design. Materials: Glass; aluminum; LEDs. Measurements:H 48"–75" W 26.5" Base Diameter 9" Cord L 8'
Design Within Reach Mantis BS1 B Floor Lamp
DWR Exclusive Born in Mainz, Germany, in 1924, Bernard Schottlander fled to England as a Jewish refugee in 1939. He worked as a welder for a short stint during the war before delving into sculpture at Leeds College of Art and the Anglo-French art center in St. John's Wood. A year later, he went on to open his own design studio and began creating new pieces in limited editions. An admirer of Alexander Calder, the American sculptor perhaps best known as originator of the mobile, Schottlander created his Mantis Collection (1951) as an homage. Movement being intrinsic to his work, he devised clever adjustable frames constructed of strong yet flexible steel rods combined with counterweights. He then fabricated shades from aluminum using repoussé and chasing techniques, relying on his trained sculptor's eye to produce beautifully flowing shapes that set the symmetrical and asymmetrical in opposition. His lamps – much like his idol's mobiles – appear to defy gravity with their floating forms. Bulb (not included): LED, CFL or incandescent; E12 base; 40W max. This is the authentic Mantis Collection. Made in China. Materials: Painted steel arm and base; painted aluminum shade; nickeled brass ball joint. Measurements:H 62"–66.5" D 27"–42.5" Shade Diameter 10.75"
Design Within Reach Tolomeo Mega Floor Lamp
Rather than develop his career within a single design discipline – be it industrial, furniture, interior, lighting or architectural design – Michele De Lucchi chose to move freely among them all, creating door pulls for Valli Colombo, laptops for Olivetti and tape dispensers for Pelikan while designing banks in Germany and apartment buildings in Japan. His Tolomeo Lamp (1987), designed in collaboration with Artemide's R&D department head Giancarlo Fassina, was honored with the Compasso d'Oro Award in 1989, earning worldwide recognition for its perfect marriage of design and engineering. Since then, the Tolomeo Collection has grown to include an assortment of sizes and styles, including the Mega Floor Lamp launched in 2002. The Tolomeo Lamp begins with a heavy base and ends with a pivoting shade. In between, the multi-armed body is fully adjustable, with steel tension cables providing infinite positions in which the lamp can be held. Bulb (not included): incandescent 150W/E26/G40. UL Listed. Made in Hungary. Materials: Extruded die-cast aluminum with high-polished finish; steel tension cables; parchment or fiber shade. Measurements:H 58"–131.5" Base Diameter 13" Shade Diameter 14" or 17"
Design Within Reach Tri-Arm Floor Lamp
DWR Exclusive In the 1950s, the three-arm floor lamp became one of the iconic designs of midcentury modernism, praised for its combination of smart functionality and industrial aesthetic. A single sleek form, these lamps provide both directional and ambient illumination, satisfying a multitude of lighting needs in any setting. New lighting collections were quick to add this must-have multifunctional piece to their assortment, and the popularity of the three-arm floor lamp continues to this day. We designed our Tri-Arm Floor Lamp (2011) to suit the furniture in our assortment and added unique features like perforated shades for improved light quality and reduced heat build-up from the bulbs. This Lamp stands on a sturdy black base, the three arms are adjustable and the leather-wrapped handles add material interest while also serving as counterweights to the shades. A slide dimmer switch operates the three lamps. Bulbs (not included): 60W max. Made in China. Materials: Chromed steel frame; chromed steel arms; leather-wrapped handles; white painted perforated shades. Measurements:H 57.5" Base Diameter 11"

Design Within Reach Rich Brilliant Willing LED Floor Lamp
DWR Exclusive “Modern is, was and will always be clever. In that spirit today, intelligence remains at the core,” says Theo Richardson, who, together with Alexander Williams and Charles Brill, founded New York-based design studio Rich Brilliant Willing (a pithy blending of surnames – Richardson, Brill and Williams) in 2007. RBW has quickly gained recognition for its cerebral designs, which emphasize the exploration of form, reinventing familiar objects with basic materials. Similarly, composition of each part of the Rich Brilliant Willing LED Floor Lamp (2012) is based on its application. A wooden rectangular-prism shade adds warmth at the light source; a tubular steel arm lends strength and a twist – at the tip, an audio jack allows the shade to rotate 360 degrees – and a steel disc at the base provides support. Ships flat. Simple assembly required. ETL Listed. Bulb (included): LED. Total power consumption 9 watts. Made in China. Materials: Solid American hickory with walnut stain or solid oak shade; clear-coated brushed steel arm; painted steel base; plastic fittings. Measurements:H 50" Base Diameter 8" D 22.5"
Design Within Reach Ktribe F2 Floor Lamp
Philippe Starck jump-started his career by designing two nightclub interiors in Paris in the 1970s. The success of the clubs won the attention of President Francois Mitterand, who asked Starck to refurbish one of the private apartments in the Elysee Palace. Two years later, Starck designed the interior of the Café Costes, Paris, and was on his way to becoming a design celebrity. In quick succession, he created elegant interiors for the Royalton and Paramount hotels in New York, the Delano in Miami and the Mondrian in Los Angeles. He also began to produce chairs, lamps, motorbikes and boats. Starck's approach to design is subversive, intelligent and always interesting. His objects surprise and delight even as they transgress boundaries and subvert expectations. For his Ktribe Collection (2007), Starck used a special polycarbonate, and when the lamp is lit, the shade reveals a diffuser hidden inside. When the lamp is off, the internal diffuser is invisible. This is a dimmable lamp, with a dimmer switch on the cord. Bulb: Halogen 150W/120V/E26 medium T10. UL Listed. Made in Italy by Flos. Unique shade creates an x-ray effect when lit. Materials: Polycarbonate; aluminum; PMMA (Polymethylmethacrylate); Zamak. Measurements:H 63.75" Diameter 15.5" Cord L 78"
