Design Within Reach LC3 Grand Modele Three-Seat Sofa with Down Cushions
The Le Corbusier group referred to their LC2 and LC3 Collections (1928) as cushion baskets, which they designed as a modernist response to the traditional club chair. These pieces reverse the standard structures of sofas and chairs by having frames that are externalized. With thick, resilient pillows resting within the steel frames, the idea was to offer all the comfort of a padded surface while applying the elegant minimalism and industrial rationale of the International Style. The resulting aesthetic of the simple tubular structure is remarkably relevant to how we live today, almost 90 years later. Each piece is signed and numbered and, as a product of Cassinas Masters Collection, is manufactured by Cassina under exclusive worldwide license from the Le Corbusier Foundation. Made in Italy. The differences between the collections are that the LC2 is more compactly scaled, and the LC3 has the option of either down- or Dacron-wrapped cushions. Materials: Chromed steel frame; nylon webbing; multi-density composite foam cushions with down wrap; top-grain semi-aniline leather upholstery; nickel-plated steel glides. Measurements:H 24.5" W 93.5" D 28.75" Seat H 15.75"
Design Within Reach Finn Two-Seater Sofa
DWR Exclusive Danish designers Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen and Kasper Rønn named their company Norm to express their dedication to working with Danish norms and standards refined over hundreds of years, says Bjerre-Poulsen, rather than rejecting them in the endless search for new. The sincerity of their approach – bypassing flashy design for good design – shows in the quality of their work. These are products that endure both physically and aesthetically. The Finn Collection (2013) they developed for Design Within Reach is directly tied to their philosophy in that it was built on a passion for details, tactility in design and creating for the need. Norm products never crave to be anything but what they are, says Rønn. That is the combination of utility, purity and quiet beauty. The teak frames can be oiled to maintain their original color or left alone to develop a beautiful silvery patina. Removable cushions are clad in UV-protected, mildew-resistant Sunbrella fabric to withstand the elements. Seating can be used with or without cushions. Weight capacity: 300 pounds per seating area. Made in Indonesia. The Finn Collection has been honored with a 2015 Architizer A+ Jury Award – selected by 300-plus international architecture and design leaders – and a 2014 Chicago Athenaeum Good Design® Award. Materials: Solid sustainably harvested teak frame; Serge Ferrari® mesh; Sunbrella® cushions; black powder-coated or brushed stainless steel fittings (cushions match fittings: choose black cushions with black powder-coated steel fittings or white cushions with brushed stainless steel fittings). Design Within Reach Theatre Two-Seater Sofa
DWR Exclusive As a theater and dance student at the University of West Virginia, Ted Boerner developed an intuitive sense of the body and the space it occupies – an awareness that now lends his furniture its genial angles and careful proportions. He attended NYU for grad school and began his career as a set and costume designer. Propping scenes and imagining the things that characters would surround themselves with made me think about how important furniture is to people, says the designer. Modern sofas often claim minimalist appeal, but few can also tout the comfort of the Theatre Collection (2001). Designed to accommodate the human body with studied proportions and simple geometry, Theatres comfort stems from its form rather than excessive layers of stuffing. With a gently angled backrest, full seat depth and elevated armrests, Boerners signature artisanal details are evident throughout. A gleaming chromed steel base runs the entire depth of the design, and welted seams lend strength and definition to the upholstery. Ships with legs unattached to save on packing materials. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Kiln-dried hardwood corner-blocked frame; unidirectional web suspension; high-density, high-resiliency foam cushions with Dacron® wrap; chrome-plated steel base; fabric or leather upholstery. Measurements:H 30" W 60" D 30.5" Seat H 19" Arm H 25.5"
Design Within Reach Raleigh Sofa
DWR Exclusive Raleigh (2009) is a comfortable collection that draws from midcentury Danish design. It features an exposed solid wood frame that wraps around the back to support the seating area while lending visual lightness and satisfying tension to the whole. Unlike other exposed-frame collections that force overly upright sitting positions, Raleigh is designed with a carefully canted seatback for a more natural way of situating yourself as you relax and unwind. We chose to work with Jeffrey Bernett and Nicholas Dodziuk on this project because of the importance they place on people – how they move, interact, live and, most of all, sit. The Raleigh Collection was named Best of Year by Interior Design in 2010, winning the magazine's top honor for the residential lounge category. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Kiln-dried, corner-blocked hardwood frame; unidirectional web suspension; high-density, high-resiliency polyurethane foam seat cushions with Dacron® wrap; Poly-fil®-, feather- and down-blend back cushions; solid walnut external frame; fabric or leather upholstery.
Design Within Reach Series 3300TM Two-Seater Sofa
Arne Jacobsen conceived of a complete and holistic aesthetic for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. Serving as the principle architect for it, he also created much of the furnishings – including the Series 3300 Collection (1956). Cool and formal, it offered a clean-lined counterpoint to the curvaceous and organic forms of his swiveling EggTM and SwanTM chairs, which were also designed specifically for the SAS. Jacobsen had a very personal connection to this collection, as it was based on a sofa that he had created for his own home. Displaying Jacobsens unfailing sense of line and proportion, the Series 3300 is a further example of his ability to create timeless classics. Original design and licensed manufacture by Republic of Fritz Hansen. Made in Poland. Compactly scaled. Canted back and deep seats offer enduring comfort. Design Within Reach Vitra Miniatures Collection: Eames Aluminum Management Chair
Each handmade Vitra miniature is a classic in the history of furniture design reduced in size at a scale of 1:6. True to the original pieces in structure and materials, the miniatures are precision-crafted, making them a thoughtful gift for a furniture lover or design professional. When Charles and Ray Eames designed the Eames Aluminum Management Chair (1958), they created a revolution in seating that has lost none of its edge. These chairs were originally developed as a special project for a private residence being designed by Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard. Moving away from the Eameses shell forms of the 1940s, the designers combined a newly affordable aluminum frame with a sling seat that subtly conforms to the body's shape. Each Vitra miniature comes handsomely packaged in a wood box with an informational booklet. Materials: Polished cast aluminum; leather. Measurements:H 5.5" W 4" D 3"

Design Within Reach Hector Pendant 4
Drawn to the translucency and versatility of bone china, Peter Bowles saw an opportunity to create something other than tableware with this time-honored material. The result is his Hector Collection (1992), which is beautifully crafted of hand-cast bone china. Creating these lights involves a highly skilled, labor-intensive process that begins with raw clay and ends with biscuit firing, glazing, glossing and firing again. When lit, these china shades have a translucent glow that allows for warm diffused light. Attention to detail is at the heart of every Original BTC collection, right down to the braided cord, which was designed by Peter and can be found on every light his company makes. The Hector Collection is UL Listed and suitable for contract use. Bulb (not included): 100W/GLS/E26. Made in England. Materials: Natural bone china shade and ceiling rose; braided, cotton-covered cord. Measurements:H 12" W 9.25", 4 lbs.
Design Within Reach Raction Potique Hi-Loop Service Table
Spanish designer Jaime Hayon immersed himself as a teenager in both skateboard culture and graffiti art, which lie at the core of the bold and whimsical forms that he creates today. In 1997, after studying industrial design in Madrid and Paris, he joined Fabrica, a research center in Treviso, Italy, where he soon became the head of design. Hayon struck out on his own in 2003, first devising collections of ceramics and furniture, then delving into interior design. His work is featured in several museums and has received accolades from the likes of Time and Wallpaper . Réaction Poétique commemorates the 50-year anniversary of Le Corbusiers death, inspired by the organic shapes of his architecture and LEsprit Nouveau artwork. I wanted to create useful objects for the modern home such as trays and side tables, but with sculptural elements interplaying forms, light and shadow, says Hayon. These pieces can be used for everything from passing hors doeuvres to displaying knickknacks. Each is carved and finished by hand and includes a card of authenticity. Made in Italy. Materials: Solid ash wood; matte black stain. Measurements:H 22" Diameter 16"
Design Within Reach Era Backless Counter Stool
Defined by its dependable bentwood construction and simple organic form, the graceful, lightweight and surprisingly strong Era Collection has been in continuous production for more than 150 years. It is the work of Michael Thonet, who perfected the bentwood process for chair-making and in the process eliminated the need for expensive and time-consuming hand-carved joints. Swiss Architect Le Corbusier used Thonets chairs for his projects, stating, Never before was something more elegant and better in its conception, more precise in its realization and more fit for practical use created. Other fans of this ubiquitous form included Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, both of whom featured it in their paintings. The Era Backless Stool (1859/1998) was created by engineers at Ton – manufacturer of Thonet seating for well over a century – in response to customer requests. Like any natural material, the wood used in this collection displays slight texture and color variations from one piece to another, making each unique. Made in the Czech Republic. Materials: Solid beech wood from FSC-certified sources; beech plywood seat; natural beech finish or water-based stain and varnish or lacquer finish; nylon floor glides. Measurements:H 24.75" Diameter 18.75"
