Design Within Reach Sol y Luna Armless Lounge Chair
DWR Exclusive Sol y Luna (1954) is an adaptation of Dan Johnson's Gazelle Collection, which was originally offered in wood or bronze, both with woven caning for the seat and back. However, due to the high cost of production and the intense hand labor involved, fewer than 150 pieces from the Gazelle line were ever produced. Now made in durable cast aluminum by outdoor manufacturer Brown Jordan, the design maintains Johnson's comfortable organic form. These pieces are shaped with the body in mind. The Lounge Chair back wraps around you, and the seats are comfortably sloped for support in a relaxed position. Seat Pad sold separately. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Made in Mexico. Materials: Cast aluminum with powder-coated finish. SEAT PAD, 100% solution-dyed acrylic Suncloth® fabric. Measurements:H 27'' W 24" D 28'' Seat H 14"
Design Within Reach Medici Outdoor Chair
An alumnus of the Royal College of Art in London, Konstantin Grcic (pronounced GER-cheech) creates furniture that reflects his logical thought process, honest use of materials and respect for production methods. To him, design involves much more than having fun. Its hard work, serious work, says the German designer. You have to think not only about the object youre designing, but everything else about it, from how it will be produced to who will be using it, to what happens to it after it goes through its life cycle. So designing is a big responsibility. Semi-reclined and low-slung for comfort, his Medici Chair (2012) is a modern take on the classic Adirondack. Fashioned only from three-quarter-inch-thick planks, Medici speaks to the production process at its start, when a tree trunk is cut into lumber. This chair is finished using a proprietary heat-treating and hand-oiling process that protects it from the elements. BIFMA approved. Medici is produced by the Italian manufacturer Mattiazzi and distributed by Herman Miller® in the U.S. and Canada. Made in Italy. Materials: Thermo-oiled ash. Measurements:H 31" W 27" D 29.5" Seat H 15.5"

Design Within Reach Shot Caf Chair
DWR Exclusive This simple chair is the work of Christophe Pillet, who has worked with many luxury brands, including Holly Hunt, FontanaArte and Veuve Clicquot. Whether working as the design director for Lacoste or as the interior architect for the Hotel Sezz in St. Tropez, Pillet has won international acclaim for his high-voltage chic, distinguished by his taste for certain rhythms and time signatures (for which he credits his early music career). After earning his degree from Domus Academy in Milan, Pillet became part of the Memphis Group, assisting Michele De Lucchi. In 1993, he started his own agency in Paris and was named Designer of the Year at the Salon du Meuble de Paris that same year. In recent years, hes been drawn to more modest projects, in which practical character and economy are privileged over any other criteria, says the designer. His Shot Café Chair (2011) is certainly in keeping with this current emphasis, fulfilling the need for a comfortable, compact chair at a great price point. Stackable up to 12 high, this outdoor chair is suitable for contract use. Made in Italy. Materials: Powder-coated tubular steel frame and steel mesh; polyester floor glides. Measurements:H 32.75" W 21" D 19.75" Seat H 17.75"
Design Within Reach Outdoor Eames Aluminum Group Side Chair
The Eames® Aluminum Group Collection (1958) began as a special project for Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard, who needed seating for a home they were designing for industrialist J. Irwin Miller in Columbus, Indiana. The request was for leisure chairs light enough to move from indoors to out and strong enough to withstand the elements. At the time, the Eameses were exploring ways to use aluminum, which had been strengthened, refined and made more affordable since WWII. They constructed a lightweight die-cast frame for the project, then wrapped it in a sling – a sitting pocket that subtly conforms to the bodys shape. The result was a completely new type of seat and a departure from the idea of a chair as solid shell. While the original concept was for outdoor seating, the Eameses quickly recognized its possibilities for indoor use. However, in 2012, Herman Miller returned the Aluminum Group to its original intent, with new materials suitable for outdoor use. Constructed of 61% recycled materials, this chair is also 90% recyclable at the end of its useful life. Backed by a 12-year manufacturers warranty. This is an authentic Eames chair by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. Features: 360-degree swivel base; PVC-free Outdoor Weave fabric designed to hold its shape and color over time. Materials: Four-star powder-coated die-cast aluminum base and frame; Outdoor Weave mesh upholstery. Measurements:H 33" W 23" D 18" Seat H 18.5"
Design Within Reach Grace Side Chair
DWR Exclusive Samuel Wilkinson thrives on bringing elegance and “a bit of soul,” in his words, to extremely functional products, which is why the Italian manufacturer EMU commissioned him to create a collection that blurs the boundary between indoor and outdoor furniture. Wilkinson met their request and took it a step further, designing the Grace Collection (2014) to be equally at home in residential and commercial settings. With a nod toward the graceful lines of 20th-century wood furniture, he resorted to die-cast aluminum for durability and weather resistance. “I wanted to create something people can enjoy for a long time because it works so well,” he explains. Stackable up to four high. Made in Italy. Materials: Powder-coated die-cast aluminum. Measurements:H 30.75" W 20.5" D 20.5" Seat H 17.75"

Design Within Reach Belleville Side Chair
Brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec founded their own design firm in 1999, where they work on everything from architectural projects to utilitarian items such as furniture, tableware and home accessories. The brothers are primarily focused on and dedicated to the organization of interior spaces, and they believe that a designer should be able to observe and to understand the context, says Ronan. Their Belleville Chair (2014) is named for the vibrant neighborhood where their firm is located, a bustling Parisian quarter with bistros, bars and cafés frequented by international clientele. Redefining the classic bistro chair, it pushes boundaries of traditional production techniques, with a sinuous slender frame that accentuates an almost impossibly thin flowing seat. Suitable for use indoors and out and lightweight for easy carrying and arrangement. Stacks up to six high. Made in Germany. Materials: Injection-molded polyamide. Measurements:H 32.75" W 21.75" D 19.25" Seat H 18.5"
Design Within Reach Outdoor LC1 Sling Chair
Le Corbusier regarded traditional furnishings, with their structures hidden beneath wads of padding and upholstery, as relics of the past. Partnering with Charlotte Perriand and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret, Le Corbusier stripped away all excess to create the sleek, elemental LC1 Chair (1928). The LC Series was originally designed for indoor use, but after a visit to Villa Savoye, where some of the pieces were being used on the outdoor terrace, Cassina was inspired to create outdoor-safe models. The manufacturer spent three years working closely with the Le Corbusier Foundation to develop a product that was within the Foundations parameters: to be the same or better quality than indoor. Cassina opted for better, using hand-polished AISI 304 stainless steel with silver welding, as opposed to chrome, to construct the frames, a material with extreme resistance to corrosion that is actually more authentic to the product; chrome was not used until the 1970s/1980s. The silver welding will patina over time and develop a halo. The back of the chair is attached to the frame by a rod that allows the angle of tilt to change – as the user shifts from one sitting position to another, the chair back moves, offering continuous support. The waterproof, UV-resistant Sunbrella® fabric is held in place by stainless steel springs that provide a comfortable give. Each piece is signed, numbered and, as a product of Cassina's Masters Collection, manufactured by Cassina under exclusive worldwide license from the Le Corbusier Foundation. Made in Italy. Winner of Wallpaper* Design Award 2012 for Best Domestic Design. A protective, water-repellant cover is included. Materials: Brush-polished AISI 304 stainless-steel frame with silver welded joints; stainless-steel screws and springs; plastic foot ends; Sunbrella® Sling fabric. Measurements:H 25.25" W 23.75" D 25.5" Seat H 15.75" Arm H 23"
Design Within Reach Bellini Chair
The world met the Bellini Chair (1998) when Heller placed six chairs in an all-white, 51-foot-long booth at the annual furniture fair in Milan. Many asked, Is that chair by Mario Bellini? as soon as they saw the sleek, sculptural lines. Others questioned if there was a metal frame hidden inside (there isnt). DWR founder Rob Forbes saw it and fell in love. The DWR catalog was already at the printer but he stopped the presses to add the Bellini Chair to the cover. Today, Bellini Chairs are so popular that Heller is producing them seven days a week just to meet the demand. Crafted of injection-molded fiberglass-reinforced polypropylene, the Bellini Chair is a sturdy, stackable and lightweight chair that is as timeless and beautiful as it is versatile. Exceptionally comfortable with a slightly flexible back, its tough enough to withstand use in a busy restaurant while elegant enough to flatter a sophisticated studio or home. Bellini resides in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and in public spaces at MoMA, where durability counts as much as good design. This chair earned the celebrated Italian architect and designer his eighth Compasso dOro award in 2001. Stackable up to six high; suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Single-piece injection molding of fiberglass-reinforced polypropylene. Measurements:H 33" W 18" D 18" Seat H 18.5"
