However, due to the high cost of production and the intense hand labor involved, fewer than 150 pieces from the Gazelle line were ever produced. Now made in durable cast aluminum by outdoor manufacturer Brown Jordan, the design maintains Johnson's comfortable organic form. These pieces are shaped with the body in mind. Defined by its dependable bentwood construction and simple form, the contract-quality Era Chair (1859) has been in continuous production for more than 150 years. By making the back of the chair and rear legs from a single piece of curved wood, designer Michael Thonet – who perfected the bentwood process for chair-making – eliminated the need for expensive and time-consuming hand-carved joints. The resulting chair is graceful, lightweight and surprisingly strong – the latter of which has been continually proven in cafés and restaurants all over the globe. With his iconic seating collection, Harry Bertoia transformed industrial wire rods into a new furniture form. The events that made this work possible began a decade earlier at Cranbrook Academy of Art, when Bertoia met Florence Knoll (then Florence Schust). Years later, the Italian-born designer was invited to work for Florence and her husband, Hans Knoll. Bertoia was given the freedom to work on whatever suited him, without being held to a strict design agenda, and the result of this arrangement was the Bertoia Seating Collection (1952). These extremely strong yet airy chairs are sculpted out of steel rods with a delicate filigreed appearance. In his art, Bertoia experimented with open forms and metal work, and his chairs were an extension of that work. "If you look at the chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture," said Bertoia. "Space passes through them." After designing his seating collection, Bertoia returned to focusing mostly on sculpture. Form follows function, and nowhere is that more apparent than in a sculpted chair that anticipates the curves of the human body. Arne Jacobsen designed the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, and for its busy lobby, he created the biomorphic Egg (1958). With this chair, Jacobsen embraced new materials that allowed him to shape fluid curves and single-piece molded shells. At a time when others were experimenting with bent tubular steel, Jacobsen focused on the upholstered armchair, believing a solution existed that was still true to modern ideals. Indeed, he met that goal. Set on a rotating base, the Egg Chair allows sitters to swivel toward a conversation area or away from others if privacy is desired. It also tilts back for relaxed lounging. Originally designed for the canteen at Novo Nordisk, an international Danish healthcare company, the Ant Chair (1952) faced an unclear future when the manufacturer expressed concern about its potential. But Arne Jacobsen believed in his product and offered to buy all the chairs if they didn't sell. Of course, he never had to make good on that offer, as the Ant Chair quickly became an international success. Jacobsen shaped the core of Danish design identity when he accommodated three different bends in one piece of plywood, simply by narrowing the chair back. This chair is ideally suited to the human body. Its seatback has a comfortable give, and its waterfall seat edge doesn't press into legs. Stackable up to six high. Following his apprenticeship with the legendary Constantin Brancusi, sculptor Isamu Noguchi began to experiment in environmental design, theatrical sets – he was the only designer choreographer Martha Graham would work with – and, eventually, product design. He created his first furniture prototypes for Herman Miller in 1942 and went on to work with companies such as Steuben and Zenith. The Noguchi Table (1948) conceals nothing, revealing everything about the nature of simplicity. Two smoothly shaped pieces of solid wood interlock to form a tripod that supports a thick glass tabletop. The base is available in black, walnut, natural cherry and white ash, the latter of which is finished with a process that arrests the wood in its freshly cut state, resulting in a creamy white color that will not turn yellow over time. DWR Exclusive Metalworker Xavier Pauchard not only brought the art of galvanizing steel to France but also took the process to the next level by creating the Marais A Chair (1934). The quintessential cafe chair, it was both elegant and robust enough to grace the decks of the S.S. Normandie ocean liner. After the death of Pauchard in 1948, his son Jean took over as managing director of their company, Tolix. In 1956, he designed an armchair to go with his father’s A Chair, naming it the A56. It takes 100 manual operations to create a Tolix chair, and 80 years after the company was founded, the Tolix name is recognized worldwide as best-in-class furniture. All Tolix furniture is still made in Autun, the same Burgundy town where the company first began. Slight surface abrasions and markings are characteristic of the material and part of its hardworking machine aesthetic. Stackable up to 10 high. Made in France. Design Within Reach Eames Molded Fiberglass Dowel-Leg Armchair (DFAW)
Charles and Ray Eames believed "design is a method of action," and they continually updated their work as new materials became available. "The chair that Charles and Ray were designing," explains grandson Eames Demetrios, "is the chair that's made tomorrow ." The duo originally designed their molded chair in metal and entered it as a prototype in MoMA's 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design, then refashioned it in light yet strong fiberglass just two years later. In the 1980s, after determining fiberglass production was detrimental to the environment, Herman Miller ceased production to explore more sustainable options, eventually choosing recyclable polypropylene. The company never quite forgot about fiberglass, however, and it recently began researching greener production methods. The Eames Molded Fiberglass Chair (1950) is the end result, constructed using a cleaner process but true to the original with its beloved variegated surface. This reintroduced version comes in a range of reformulated semi-gloss color pigments that faithfully reproduce the vintage ones. After refining their molded plastic chairs, Charles and Ray Eames began experimenting with making a chair from welded wire. To succeed, the Eameses had to figure out how to create a design with the strength they needed while keeping manufacturing costs as low as possible. Ultimately, they decided on using lighter-gauge wire doubled over into a rim that sandwiches heavier inner wire to form their Eames Wire Chair (1951), which won them their first American mechanical design patent. Its organic shape and airy silhouette are complemented by what's commonly referred to as an Eiffel base (because of its trademark shape). This is an authentic Eames product by Herman Miller.
