Design Within Reach Outdoor LC7 Swivel Chair
The LC7 Swivel Chair (1928) evolved from one of a number of experiments, including an attempt to fashion a chair by wrapping inner tubes from tires around a steel frame. As the Le Corbusier group refined such trials, a sensuous solution took form. A round, thickly padded seat rests on top of a curving claw-like base of tubular steel that resolves in a swivel mechanism, giving the seat pad a buoyant look. A curved, amply padded barrel, doubling as backrest and chair arms, links three tubular steel supports that fuse at the seat base. The LC Series was originally designed for indoor use, but after a visit to Villa Savoye, where some of the pieces were being used on the outdoor terrace, Cassina was inspired to create outdoor-safe models. The manufacturer spent three years working closely with the LC Foundation to develop a product that was within the foundation's parameters: To be "the same or better quality than indoor." Cassina opted for better, using hand-polished AISI 304 stainless-steel with silver welding, as opposed to chrome, to construct the frames – a material with extreme resistance to corrosion that is actually more authentic to the product; chrome was not used until the 1970s/'80s. The silver welding will patina over time and develop a halo. Sunbrella fabric covers the UV-resistant (and waterproof) seat and backrest cushions, which are wrapped in "Ecofill" – a hypoallergenic fiber that dries quickly. Each piece is signed and numbered and, as a product of Cassina's Masters Collection, is manufactured by Cassina under exclusive worldwide license from the Le Corbusier Foundation. Made in Italy. A protective, water-repellant cover is included. Materials: Brush-polished AISI 304 stainless-steel frame with silver welded joints; stainless-steel screws; plastic foot ends; hypoallergenic, biodegradable self-draining polyurethane foam; CFC-free polyurethane foam; polyester yarn netting; Sunbrella® Sling fabric. Design Within Reach Sol y Luna Armless Lounge Chair
DWR Exclusive Sol y Luna (1954) is an adaptation of Dan Johnson's Gazelle Collection, which was originally offered in wood or bronze, both with woven caning for the seat and back. However, due to the high cost of production and the intense hand labor involved, fewer than 150 pieces from the Gazelle line were ever produced. Now made in durable cast aluminum by outdoor manufacturer Brown Jordan, the design maintains Johnson's comfortable organic form. These pieces are shaped with the body in mind. The Lounge Chair back wraps around you, and the seats are comfortably sloped for support in a relaxed position. Seat Pad sold separately. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Made in Mexico. Materials: Cast aluminum with powder-coated finish. SEAT PAD, 100% solution-dyed acrylic Suncloth® fabric. Measurements:H 27'' W 24" D 28'' Seat H 14"
Design Within Reach 1966 Collection Lounge Chair with Arms
Craving furniture that could stand up to the salty environment of her seaside home in Florida, Florence Knoll called on Richard Schultz to create "a decent set of outdoor furniture made out of materials that won't rust or corrode." That was in 1962, and Schultz spent the next four years designing his refined 1966 Collection, originally known as the Knoll Leisure Collection. At a time when most outdoor furniture was stamped out of metal with backrests shaped like bouquets of flowers, the 1966 Collection brought the clean lines and balanced proportions of indoor modern furniture to outdoor living. In the years since its debut, the collection has been re-engineered to take advantage of modern materials like Teflon® thread. In creating the 1966 Collection, Schultz satisfied Florence Knoll's request for outdoor furniture that lasts, and many of the sets purchased 50 years ago are still being enjoyed today. The 1966 Collection is included in the permanent collection at MoMA. This is the authentic 1966 Lounge Chair by Knoll. Made in U.S.A. Fitted cover sold separately. Materials: Cast and extruded aluminum frame; weather-resistant polyester powder-coated finish; woven vinyl-coated polyester mesh; pure vinyl straps; Teflon thread; stainless steel supports and connectors; clear plastic floor glides. Measurements:H 26" W 26" D 28.25" Seat H 14" Arm H 20.25"
Design Within Reach Medici Outdoor Chair
An alumnus of the Royal College of Art in London, Konstantin Grcic (pronounced GER-cheech) creates furniture that reflects his logical thought process, honest use of materials and respect for production methods. To him, design involves much more than having fun. "It's hard work, serious work," says the German designer. "You have to think not only about the object you're designing, but everything else about it, from how it will be produced to who will be using it, to what happens to it after it goes through its life cycle. So designing is a big responsibility." Semi-reclined and low-slung for comfort, his Medici Chair (2012) is a modern take on the classic Adirondack. Fashioned only from three-quarter-inch-thick planks, Medici speaks to the production process at its start, when a tree trunk is cut into lumber. This chair is finished using a proprietary heat-treating and hand-oiling process that protects it from the elements. BIFMA approved. Medici is produced by the Italian manufacturer Mattiazzi and distributed by Herman Miller® in the U.S. and Canada. Made in Italy. Materials: Thermo-oiled ash. Measurements:H 31" W 27" D 29.5" Seat H 15.5"
Design Within Reach Stack High-Back Lounge Chair
DWR Exclusive Based in Valencia, Spain, Borja Garcia is the founder of a multidisciplinary design studio and a professor in architecture and industrial design. “We are a team led by passion,” Garcia says of his staff, a group drawn together by their shared belief in research and working slowly to find the best solution instead of the fastest. Evoking the slim shape of a sail, his Stack Collection (2014) is an elegant amalgam of strength and grace. It’s noted for chairs with sling seats constructed of Batyline mesh, a supremely hardwearing outdoor textile praised for its exceptional tear strength, ability to retain shape and resistance to fading and mildewing season after season. Due in very large part to this durable mesh from French company Serge Ferrari, a leading manufacturer of composite materials, Stack is more than able to stack up to sun, salt and rain. The collection is rounded out with equally durable tables fitted with tough, low-maintenance phenolic resin tops. Suitable for residential and commercial use. Armchair stacks up to five high. Design Within Reach Walter Lamb Lounge Chair
DWR Exclusive Designer Walter Lamb was experimenting with bronze and copper tubing salvaged from sunken naval ships at Pearl Harbor when he created the prototype for his iconic outdoor collection. Today the pieces are crafted from weatherproof brass that will develop a rich patina over time (or it can be polished to return the surface to its original luster). The Walter Lamb Collection (1940s) is hand-wrapped with marine-grade, UV-stable cording that's flexible enough to provide comfortable seating but strong enough to withstand the elements. The brass frames will not rust and do not need to be refinished. This collection was recognized with a MoMA design award. Made in Mexico. Materials: Unfinished tubular brass; marine-grade polyester braid 0.25" rope. Measurements:H 30" W 23" D 33" Seat H 14"
Design Within Reach Grace Side Chair
DWR Exclusive Samuel Wilkinson thrives on bringing elegance and “a bit of soul,” in his words, to extremely functional products, which is why the Italian manufacturer EMU commissioned him to create a collection that blurs the boundary between indoor and outdoor furniture. Wilkinson met their request and took it a step further, designing the Grace Collection (2014) to be equally at home in residential and commercial settings. With a nod toward the graceful lines of 20th-century wood furniture, he resorted to die-cast aluminum for durability and weather resistance. “I wanted to create something people can enjoy for a long time because it works so well,” he explains. Stackable up to four high. Made in Italy. Materials: Powder-coated die-cast aluminum. Measurements:H 30.75" W 20.5" D 20.5" Seat H 17.75"
Design Within Reach Belleville Side Chair
Brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec founded their own design firm in 1999, where they work on everything from architectural projects to utilitarian items such as furniture, tableware and home accessories. The brothers are primarily focused on and dedicated to the organization of interior spaces, and they believe that "a designer should be able to observe and to understand the context," says Ronan. Their Belleville Chair (2014) is named for the vibrant neighborhood where their firm is located, a bustling Parisian quarter with bistros, bars and cafés frequented by international clientele. Redefining the classic bistro chair, it pushes boundaries of traditional production techniques, with a sinuous slender frame that accentuates an almost impossibly thin flowing seat. Suitable for use indoors and out and lightweight for easy carrying and arrangement. Stacks up to six high. Made in Germany. Materials: Injection-molded polyamide. Measurements:H 32.75" W 21.75" D 19.25" Seat H 18.5"
